Objectives: The objectives of this study were to investigate the in vitro biological effect of the methanolic crude extract received from edible mushrooms; Flammulina velutipes on anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, anti-lipid peroxidation (LPO), antimicrobial activity, and anticancer activity. The scientific result obtained here was possibility of developing this variety as an ingredient in health/medical food purposes as well as a functional food.Methods: In this study, the methanol crude extract of F. velutipes has been performed and in vitro pharmacological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, anti-LPO, antimicrobial activity, and anticancer activity were evaluated.Results: The results revealed that anti-inflammatory activity of crude extract was very significant with 79.81±0.87% of the dose-dependent manner. Antioxidant and anti-low-density lipoprotein (LDL) peroxidation activity of the extract showed its capacity of free radical scavenging with high-level antioxidant compounds and lipid preventive effects (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl: 79.81±0.01%, total phenol: 991.10±0.01 μg gallic acid equivalents/0.1 g dry matter, H2O2: 93.27±0.05%, LPO: 33.33±0.00%, and LDL: 57±0.03%, respectively). Analysis has also demonstrated that the methanolic extract of F. velutipes provided an antimicrobial activity to ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. Moreover, F. velutipes extract showed a growth inhibitory effect in HepG2 cells with the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value IC50=8.25±7.59 μg/ml.Conclusion: This indicated that crude extract from F. velutipes was scientifically proved as a potential source of therapeutic agent and be able to utilize as a functional ingredient for healthy or supplement food.

Dibenz[b,f]azepine and its five derivatives bearing different functional groups were synthesized by known methods. The compounds thus synthesized were evaluated for antioxidant potential through different in vitro models such as (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity,ß-carotene-linoleic acid model system, reducing power assay and phosphomolybdenum method. Under our experimental condition among the synthesized compounds dibenz[b,f]azepine (a) and 10-methoxy-5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine (d) exhibited potent antioxidant activity in concentration dependent manner in all the above four methods. Butylated hydroxyl anisole (BHA) and ascorbic acid (AA) were used as the reference antioxidant compounds. The most active compounds like dibenz[b,f]azepine and its methoxy group substituent have shown more promising antioxidant and radical scavengers compared to the standards like BHA and ascorbic acid. It is conceivable from the studies that the tricyclic amines,i.e. dibenz[b, f]azepine and some of its derivatives are effective in their antioxidant activity properties.

The aim of present study was to estimate the in vitro antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity of hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea. Antioxidant activity was assessed by using 2, 2- diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay using ascorbic acid as standard antioxidant. The extract was found to scavenge effectively the free radicals. The total flavonoid contents were determined by established methods and were found to be 0.547 mg/100mg in quercitin equivalents. Antimicrobial activity was performed against 2 stains of human pathogenic bacteria by well diffusion method. Hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea showed good antimicrobial activity against gram positive bacteria. The antioxidant activities may be attributed to the presence of significant amounts of flavonoid compounds. Results indicated that hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea possess significant antioxidant effect in dose dependent manner, followed by the hydroalcoholic extract of Vernonia cinerea possessed good antimicrobial activity. Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia Jack, family, Simaroubaceae) is traditionally used in Malaysia as health supplement for hypertension, diarrhea, aches, persistent fever, malaria, sexual insufficiency, dysentery, and glandular swelling. In this study, hydroalcoholic extract of Eurycoma longifolia Jack was studied for its antioxidant and in-vitro anti-inflammatory properties. The antioxidant activity (free radical scavenging) was evaluated to determine the total antioxidant capacity of extract Eurycoma longifolia Jack. The DPPH assay showed significant antioxidant activity in all concentrations (10, 25, 50,100 and 250 µg/ml). The antioxidant property of the extract was compared with the values of ascorbic acid, a standard antioxidant. Human RBC (HRBC) stbilization method was utilized to evaluate the in-vitro anti-inflammatory activity of the extract. The extract showed a significant anti-inflammtory activity in all the concentrations tested (25, 50,100, 250, 500 and 1000 µg/ml) and the activity was increased in a concentration dependent manner.


Annona muricata is one of the important herbal plant that are widely used to treat antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, insecticidal, antimalarial, anticancer, antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In the present study, extraction procedure was carried out in few step processes method. The extract contains high percentage of steroid, alkaloid, flavonoid, phenolic and saponin. The extract was used to study the antioxidant activity; antibacterial activities and anticancer activity by standard methods. The antioxidant activity was studied by using radical scavenging DPPH, FRAP and H2O2 method and disc diffusion method. The results of antibacterial activity of the following bacteria’s such as Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Bacillus, E.coli shows the maximum zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus which is around 1.7 cm. The anticancer activity was carried out by MTT assay using Hep-G2 as cell line and results are reported in the paper.

The methanolic extract of aerial parts of Tanacetum vulgare L. (Asteraceae) and its fractions were investigated for antioxidant activity. The crude extract displayed DPPH radical scavenging effects with an EC50 value of 37 ± 1.2 μg/mL (n=3). Activity-guided fractionations of the crude extract resulted in the isolation of three antioxidant compounds; 3,5-O-dicaffeoylquinic acid (3,5-DCQA), axillarin and luteolin. 3,5-DCQA was the major constituent with antioxidant activity (IC50 = 9.7 μM) comparable with that of the standard quercetin (IC50 = 8.8 μM). Though the isolated compounds were previously known for their antioxidant effects, this is the first report on the identification of 3,5-DCQA from Tanacetum vulgare. The displayed potent antioxidant activity of the crude extract and isolated active principles is in support of the traditional medicinal uses of the plant for disease conditions such as wound healing, rheumatic arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

Rosmarinus eriocalyx Jord. & Fourr is a well-known aromatic and medicinal plant whose consumption serves to remedy a number of disorders, evergreen bush endemic to Algeria. The present study aimed it investigating the in-vitro anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial for two extracts of Rosmarinus eriocalyx. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and the reducing power essay, anti-inflammatory activity with the Human Red Blood Cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. However, the antimicrobial activity was tested with three bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633. The results show an excellent antioxidant and an interesting inflammatory activities but a weak power against the used strains therefore. © 2020 International Formulae Group. All rights reserved. Antioxidants from the natural products are essential to prevent the progression of free radical mediated diseases. In the present study, ethanol extract of propolis collected from different geographical origin were evaluated for their free radical scavenging potential by employing different in-vitro assays such as DPPH, ABTS, Nitric oxide and Hydrogen peroxide. All the tested samples contained considerable amount of total phenols and vitamin C content. In the entire assay, the percentage of inhibition increased with the increase in concentration. Among the propolis samples collected, the highest activity was found in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Haryana. The difference in the antioxidant activity level was obtained from the assay may reflect a relative difference in the ability of antioxidant compounds to scavenge different free radicals in the extract. Phenols and vitamin C are the major contributors to antioxidant activity in propolis. The propolis from these locations may be of considerable interest in preventing the ill effects of excessive free radical generation in the human body.

In our in vitro and in vivo studies, we used Acalypha indica root methanolic extract (AIRME), and investigated their free radical scavenging/antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Primarily, phytochemical analysis showed rich content of phenols (70.92 mg of gallic acid/g) and flavonoids (16.01 mg of rutin/g) in AIRME. We then performed HR-LC-MS and GC-MS analyses, and identified 101 and 14 phytochemical compounds, respectively. Among them, ramipril glucuronide (1.563%), antimycin A (1.324%), swietenine (1.134%), quinone (1.152%), oxprenolol (1.118%), choline (0.847%), bumetanide (0.847%) and fenofibrate (0.711%) are the predominant phytomolecules. Evidence from in vitro studies revealed that AIRME scavenges DPPH and hydroxyl radicals in a concentration dependent manner (10–50 μg/mL). Similarly, hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation were also remarkably inhibited by AIRME as concentration increases (20–100 μg/mL). In vitro antioxidant activity of AIRME was comparable to ascorbic acid treatment. For in vivo studies, carrageenan (1%, sub-plantar) was injected to rats to induce localized inflammation. Acute inflammation was represented by paw-edema, and significantly elevated (p < 0.05) WBC, platelets and C-reactive protein (CRP). However, AIRME pretreatment (150/300 mg/kg bodyweight) significantly (p < 0.05) decreased edema volume. This was accompanied by a significant (p < 0.05) reduction of WBC, platelets and CRP with both doses of AIRME. The decreased activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase and glutathione peroxidase in paw tissue were restored (p < 0.05 / p < 0.01) with AIRME in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, AIRME attenuated carrageenan-induced neutrophil infiltrations and vascular dilation in paw tissue. For the first time, our findings demonstrated the potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of AIRME, which could be considered to develop novel anti-inflammatory drugs.

Euphorbia hirta L (Euphorbiaceae) also called asthma herb has long been prescribed in traditional medicine because it exhibits diverse pharmacological actions due to the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, triterpenoids, and saponins. The present study is aimed at the study of phytochemical and antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory screening of E. hirta. Extraction of dried powder was performed followed by phytochemical screening using color reactions. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of the extracts were estimated by Folin-Ciocalteu and Aluminum chloride method respectively. The antioxidant activity was studied by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method.  Anti-inflammatory activity was studied by using protein denaturation in vitro bioassay. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds. TPC, TFC and antioxidant activity (IC50) of the extract were found as 288.10 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram (GAE/g), 29.36 mg quercetin equivalent per gram (QE/g) and 32.23 µg/mL (p<0.05) respectively. Diclofenac sodium and E. hirta extract showed the maximum inhibition of 91.28% and 68.20% respectively at the concentration of 1000 µg/mL compared with control (p>0.05). The phenolic compounds and flavonoids exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities because of their scavenging ability. The demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities may be the rationale behind some of its folkloric uses and also may be responsible for some of its pharmacological effects. Thus, E. hirta can be considered a good source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory actions, which might be beneficial for combating oxidative stress.

Objective: Objective of the present study was to carry out in vivo anti-inflammatory and in vitro antioxidant activity of methanol extract of aerial part of the Blumea eriantha DC belonging to family Asteraceae.Methods: The shade dried aerial part of B. eriantha (0.5 kg) was powdered and extracted with methanol (1.5 x 3L) at room temperature (24h x 3). After filtration combined all the three extracts and were concentrated on rotary evaporator under reduced pressure at 40 °C, thereby providing crude methanol extract which was subsequently employed for further studies. Anti-inflammatory effect was studied by carrageenan-induced paw edema model in rats at dose level 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg. Acute oral toxicity study and in vitro antioxidant potential of the extract was also studied. The in vitro antioxidant activity of methanol extract of aerial part of Blumea eriantha DC was evaluated against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl (OH) radicalscavenging and reducing power assays.Results: The results indicate that methanol extract of Blumea eriantha (BEME, 400 mg/kg) exhibited significant inhibition (p<0.001) of increase in paw edema at 5th h. IC50 value of BEME showed significant antioxidant activity. The extract exhibits promising free radical scavenging effect of DPPH, H2O2, OH and reducing power in a dose-dependent manner up to 100µg/ml concentration while the reference standard Ascorbic acid demonstrated more scavenging potential than the methanol extract of Blumea eriantha The methanol extract was found to be safe at the dose of 2000 mg/kg.Conclusion: The results of the experimental study confirmed that methanol extract of Blumea eriantha DC possesses significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.
