The quality of the environment and basic needs of the community as long as it is a matter of concern and need to be improved. This study aims to measure the effect of environmental quality on the fulfillment of basic needs. Mixed methods of Quantitative (with questionnaires) and qualitative (by interview) are conducted in data collection and analysis. The results showed that all environmental quality indexes were correlated with the fulfillment of basic needs, except for the biodiversity index. Based on the correlation test it is found that all environmental quality index have positive effect on the fulfillment of basic needs. This means, if there is an increase in air quality, water quality, land cover, biodiversity, public health, and environmental health then the fulfillment of basic needs will increase, and vice versa. The air quality index and land cover have the largest constants among the other indices. Thus, an increase of that value will have a greater impact on the increase in basic compliance, and vice versa. Kualitas lingkungan dan kebutuhan dasar masyarakat selama ini merupakan hal yang menjadi perhatian dan perlu terus ditingkatkan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur pengaruh kualitas lingkungan terhadap pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar. Metode gabungan kuantitatif (dengan penyebaran kuesioner) dan kualitatif (dengan wawancara) dilakukan dalam pengumpulan dan analisis data. Hasil penelitian di Provinsi Banten menunjukkan bahwa semua indeks kualitas lingkungan berkorelasi dengan pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar, kecuali indeks keanekaragaman hayati. Berdasarkan uji korelasi didapatkan bahwa semua indeks kualitas lingkungan berpengaruh positif terhadap pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar. Hal ini berarti, apabila terjadi kenaikan kualitas udara, kualitas air, tutupan lahan, keanekaragaman hayati, kesehatan masyarakat, dan kesehatan lingkungan maka pemenuhan kebutuhan dasar akan meningkat, begitu juga sebaliknya. Indeks kualitas udara dan tutupan lahan mempunyai konstanta yang paling besar diantara indeks lainnya. Dengan demikian, kenaikan dari nilai tersebut akan berdampak lebih besar pada kenaikan pemenuhan dasar, demikian juga sebaliknya.

The present inquiry arises as a result of a constant search of problems that affect cities of the country, by the Hotbed of Investigation of Surcolombian Socioeconomic Studies HISSS, of the Surcolombiana University of Neiva (Colombia) -.In this way, we found those factors and actions that contribute to making Bogotá, Medellin, Barranquilla, Neiva, Tunja and Cúcuta, cities that the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development through the urban environmental quality indexes (UEQUI) categorizes, at medium, low and very low levels. A methodology was developed that projects positivist and qualitative investigation, corresponding to a descriptive and explanatory study of the environmental sustainability of the cities is obtained from factors such as: public space; green areas; environmental pollution; mobility, public transport. The results obtained are of a relevant nature because they show old direct effects on the quality of life of the inhabitants, so that from them, alternative solutions are interpreted and proposed

A comprehensive study on the air quality was carried out in four locations namely, Tiruchengode Bus Stand, K.S.R College Campus, Pallipalayam Bus Stop and Erode Government Hospital to assess the prevailing quality of air. Ambient air sampling was carried out in four locations using a high volume air sampler and the mass concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOX and CO were measured. The analyzed quality parameters were compared with the values suggested by National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Air quality index was also calculated for the gaseous pollutants and for Particulate Matters. It was found that PM10 concentration exceeds the threshold limits in all the measured locations. The higher vehicular density is one of the main reasons for the higher concentrations of these gaseous pollutants. The air quality index results show that the selected locations come under moderate air pollution.

The reuse of domestic wastewater for irrigation of floriculture crops is a very promising option in water-scarce areas. On the other hand, there are concerns about the effect of that kind low-quality water on plant growth. The present work examined the effect of irrigation with several type of treated domestic wastewater on production of carnations. Potted plants were irrigated with primary treated, secondary treated and tertiary treated wastewater as well as with water and water with fertilizer. The results shown that carnations can be irrigated with treated wastewater as the growth and quality of plant is equal or better compared with water. Furthermore, it was found that nutrients and micro-elements contained in treated wastewater had as a result positive effect on characteristics of carnations.

Water quality indexes are a tool used to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of a water body according to its use. The present study proposes the inclusion of oil and grease (OG) as a new water quality index (ICAMPFF-GA) parameter for the preservation of marine biota in tropical areas, since it is a typical pollutant found and measured in water bodies, causing damage to the aquatic environment. The normalized curve for OG was defined based on the percentage of surviving microorganism under a lethal concentration exposure of OG. The ICAMPFF-GA suitability was evaluated by its application to analyze marine water quality in the area of the sea outfall in the city of Cartagena, Colombia and comparing the trends of the outfall flow and the rainfall for 2017. Physical chemical data analyzed for the year 2017 shows that OG varies from 0.0 to 3.8 mg/L. The results show that the water quality index increases when rainfall and flow values increase for the rainy season. The ICAMPFF-GA can be a tool to evaluate the water quality of marine waters affected by the discharge of waters with oil and grease.

O Planejamento da Paisagem aplicado ao meio urbanizado tem como um dos princípios a manutenção ou melhoria da qualidade ambiental urbana. A cobertura do solo urbano é um dos aspectos que interfere na qualidade ambiental. Assim, mapeou-se a cobertura do solo do bairro Cabral, Curitiba/PR e foi elaborada uma chave classificatória (legenda do mapa) destacando aspectos da estrutura de cada paisagem, com inferências sobre a dinâmica e a qualidade ambiental das paisagens do bairro. Foram utilizadas imagens de 2009 do Google Earth e a base cartográfica de 2011 do Instituto de Pesquisa e Planejamento Urbano de Curitiba (IPPUC) na escala 1:25.000. O mapa final, na escala 1:12.500, e a chave classificatória foram trabalhadas no software CorelDRAW X6. As 18 categorias de paisagens identificadas diferem entre si pela presença de espaços edificados, espaços sem edificações, vias de tráfego e terminal de ônibus, sendo a cobertura vegetal um importante aspecto que interferiu na classificação das paisagens. Com a avaliação da qualidade ambiental do bairro Cabral concluiu-se que a presença de corredores de edifícios e de barracões em pontos localizados diminui a qualidade ambiental, mas as áreas de manchas verdes importantes, que representam a cobertura vegetal, atuam como contribuintes para aumentar a qualidade ambiental e devem ser preservadas.  A B S T R A C T The Landscape Planning applied to urbanized areas has as one of the principles the upkeep or improvement of the urban environmental quality. The urban land cover is one of the aspects that interfere in the environmental quality. So that, the land cover of Cabral district, located in Curitiba/PR was mapped and qualifying key (key of map) was organized highlighting the structure aspects of which landscape, with inferences about the dynamic and the environmental quality of the district’s landscapes. It was used Google Earth images (2009) and the cartographic base (2011) from IPPUC (Institut of Research and Urban Planning of Curitiba), scale 1:25.000. The final map, in scale 1:12.500 and the qualifying key were made in software Corel Draw X6. It was identified eighteen categories of landscapes that are differed among themselves by built-up spaces, non-built-up spaces, traffic roads and bus station. The vegetation cover was an important aspect which interfered on the landscape classification. With the environmental quality evaluation of Cabral district it was concluded that the existence of lines of buildings and large sheds, in some specific areas decrease the environmental quality, but the important green spots areas, which represent the vegetation cover, act as contributors to increase the environmental quality and they should be preserved. Water is a fundamental nutrient in the life of any living being. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate its quality, because it is an issue of increasing concern countries around the world for reasons such as the health of the population, regional, national and international economic development, and the environmental quality of the ecosystems. One tool that has been used to know the state of the water is the water quality indexes (WQI). The objective of this research was to develop a WQI based on fuzzy logic, which allows for the estimation of water quality in the Utcubamba River. The methodology used was proposed by Icaga in 2007. To evaluate the proposed WQI called "Diffuse Water Quality Index" (DWQI), sixteen points from the sampling conducted by the Research Institute for Sustainable Development during October 2014 on the Utcubamba River and its tributaries were used. To validate the index, it was necessary to estimate the correlation coefficient R2 between the results obtained and those of the NSF WQI wáter quality index reported by the Water Research Center. This new index presented results and reasonable correlation, R2 = 0.81. It is concluded that DWQI can be used as a tool for decision making in the water management of the Utcubamba River.

Examining the indoor air environment of public venues, especially populated supermarkets such as Co-Ops in Kuwait, is crucial to ensure that these venues are safe from indoor environmental deficits such as sick building syndrome (SBS). The aim of this study was to characterize the quality of the indoor air environment of the Co-Ops supermarkets in Kuwait based on investigation of CO2, CO, NO2, H2S, TVOCs, and NMHC. On-site measurements were conducted to evaluate these parameters in three locations at the selected Co-Ops, and the perceived air quality (PAQ) was determined to quantify the air’s pollutants as perceived by humans. Moreover, the indoor air quality index (AQI) was constructed for the selected locations, and the ANOVA test was used to analyze the association between the observed concentrations among these environmental parameters. At least in one spot at each Co-Op, the tested environmental parameters exceeded the threshold limit set by the environmental agencies. The PAQ for Co-Op1, 2, and 3 are 1.25, 1.00, and 0.75 respectively. CO2 was significantly found in an association with CO, H2S, and TVOCs, and its indoor-outdoor concentrations were significantly correlated with R2 values ranges from 0.40 to 0.86 depending on the tested location.

There is a global concern for the increase in health costs in a poor air quality relationship especially in urban environments. In Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, although it has a discontinuous monitoring of air quality, there is no air quality program that includes thresholds and contingencies for poor quality. This article proposes an environmental quality index based on the algorithms of other entities and climatic variables typical of the characteristics of the city of Ciudad Juárez and El Paso. The system is in the way of integrating the measurements of gases such as Ozone, CO and PM2.5 as well as the meteorological variables of humidity, wind speed and temperature. To obtain the above, it is necessary to strategically install sensors in different areas of the city, extract their information, store them in databases, analyze the data and create a citizen warning mechanism when the value of the index can harm the health of people. Citizen participation is a fundamental element in the development of the project. This article shows the development of the environmental quality index for Ciudad Juárez and the results of the project.
