How perceived value of feedback influences its impact on self-efficacy

We tested the effect of feedback on the self-efficacy of 317 people from other countries who were teaching English in China, to establish the influence of their perceived value of feedback on the relationship between feedback seeking and receiving and self-efficacy. We used hierarchical regression to analyze the data and found that participants' perceived value of feedback seeking had a significant positive moderating effect on their feedback seeking and self-efficacy. In addition, value perceptions played a critical role in determining behavior through feedback. A practical implication of these results is that managers and employees should cultivate a positive feedbackseeking and receiving attitude to enhance self-regulation.

Drawing on the reciprocal determinism of self-regulation system, a process-based model is used to examine the relationship of learning goal orientation (LGO) among university students with their academic performance, via reciprocal relationships between initial status and change trajectories in academic self-efficacy and feedback-seeking behaviors. A longitudinal study of 316 Chinese university students throughout their first year in college reveals that students who have high LGO in their first month after entering the university generally have higher academic self-efficacy and seek more feedback. Moreover, initial levels of feedback seeking are positively related to academic performance via linear change in academic self-efficacy over time. Limitations of the study and practical implications are discussed.

Purpose Although the role of creativity in the entrepreneurial process has long been analysed, only recently scholars have begun addressing its influence on entrepreneurial intentions, showing that complex dynamics characterise this relationship. The purpose of this paper is to understand the surrounding mechanisms (moderation and mediation) that connect creativity to entrepreneurial intentions, with a focus on social context and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Design/methodology/approach A structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of 507 students from 17 to 21 years old. The effect of creativity on entrepreneurial intentions and the moderating role of social context were tested with a three-step hierarchical regression, while the mediating effect of self-efficacy was tested by a multiple regression analysis based on the bootstrapping method. Findings The results reveal that: peers who encourage entrepreneurship moderate the relationship between creativity and entrepreneurial intentions by strengthening this relationship, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy mediates the relationship between creativity and entrepreneurial intentions. Research limitations/implications In light of these results, institutions should draw attention to how creative potential in students differs in order to provide new educational programmes to strengthen self-efficacy in entrepreneurial students and support encouraging social context of peers in which entrepreneurial intentions can be fostered. Originality/value The study, by responding to the suggestions of conducting research on the interface between creativity and entrepreneurship (Shane and Nicolaou, 2015), brings new empirical details regarding the mechanisms that link creativity to entrepreneurial intentions. Furthermore, it casts light on the interaction between dispositional and social variables, showing the crucial role of peers in enhancing the interaction between creativity and intentions.

This study examines the mediating effect of teacher empowerment on the relationship between teachers’ participation in decision making and their professional commitment. The data were collected through quantitative questionnaires from a sample of 983 teachers in 25 junior high schools and 27 high schools in Israel. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that teacher empowerment mediated the effect of teachers’ participation in decision making (technical domain) on teacher commitment, thus demonstrating the critical role of empowerment in enhancing teacher commitment. The teachers’ sense of empowerment is also related to their desire to be leaders. Implications are drawn regarding the important role that principals and other school administrators need to play in enhancing the teachers’ sense of empowerment.

This study investigates the relationship between financial self-efficacy (FSE) and saving behavior within a sample of 847 U.S. pre-retirees aged 50 to 70 from the Health and Retirement Study. In accordance with the social cognitive theory of self-regulation, results revealed that FSE is positively related to saving behavior after controlling for sociodemographic attributes, financial characteristics, and saving motives. Understanding how FSE contributes to saving behavior is critical as older workers attempt to bridge the retirement saving gap. Financial counselors and planners can help this population save by cultivating and supporting clients’ FSE throughout the financial planning and counseling process.

This study conducted based on the phenomenon of complex problems faced by the students who have dual roles, namely students who are married and also working. The study aims to find out the empirical data and to ensure the relationship between self-efficacy and social support with work-family balance. The research design used a correlation with the ex-post-facto model that had 214 samples were selected using purposive sampling techniques with the criteria of students who were married and also working. The data assessed by using the General Self-efficacy (GSE) Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and Work-Family Balance Scale (WFBS). The data analyzed by using hierarchical regression analysis techniques. The results showed that: 1) there was a significant relationship between self-efficacy and work-family balance (∆R=0.351; ∆F=63.927; P=<0.01) with a contribution of 22.8%, 2) there was a significant relationship between social support and work-family balance (∆R=0.145; P<0.01) with a contribution of 16.6% based on the significant aspects of other support, family support, and friend support, the results obtained significant relationships in each aspect of family support and friends’ support with work-family balance, and 3) there was a significant simultaneous relationship between self-efficacy and social support with family balance (R=0.645; F=24.618; P<0.05) with the most frequent based on R2 for 41.6%. This study concluded that there is a partially and simultaneously significant relationship between self-efficacy, social support, and work-family balance. The implications of these findings are discussed in the discussion.

The study looked at factors that influenced the self-efficacy in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) of a group of university teachers in Vietnam. This study explored the relationship between Vietnamese teachers’ discourses of effective teaching practices and their self-efficacy beliefs, the influence of Vietnamese culture and context on teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs, and whether participating in the research led to a change in the self-efficacy beliefs of the teacher participants and of myself as researcher.The research took the form of a qualitative case study. Participants were eight university teachers of the English language at a technical university in Vietnam. Data collection lasted six months. Data collection tools included focus group discussions, individual interviews, journaling, and observations. An inductive coding process and thematic analysis were used for analysing data. Findings indicate that social persuasion was the most influential source of self-efficacy information. The study shows that different sources of self-efficacy information interacted with one another to influence the two dimensions of self-efficacy. Besides, it appears that teachers’ understanding of a number of environment and workplace factors appeared to constrain some teachers into adopting the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) approach and possibly reduced their self-efficacy in adapting a Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)-oriented approach. After participating in the study, the teaching approaches of study teachers and my own approaches seemed to be more CLT-oriented although most of us were characterised by a low sense of self-efficacy in adapting this approach in the Vietnamese classrooms. Findings also suggest that several aspects of Vietnamese culture, e.g. the concept of face, are likely to have influenced the way the study teachers selected, weighted and interpreted efficacy-building information. In addition, it is plausible that changes in context, e.g. teaching different kinds of students, led to a change in the way the teachers and I weighed and selected self-efficacy information. Self-reflection, self-doubt and self-regulation were other factors causing fluctuations in the study teachers’ and my self-efficacy. My study contributes to a widening understanding of how different aspects of culture can impact on self-efficacy. It provides examples to challenge the claim that the self-efficacy of experienced teachers is stable and the widespread view that a negative sense of self-efficacy induces individuals to give up and make less effort. The study shows the relationship between teacher self-efficacy beliefs and their discourses of EFL instruction, i.e. their self-efficacy in using different aspects of a communicative approach fluctuated at different stages of the study. The study points to the need to improve leadership practice and teaching conditions at the faculty and university. Preparing teachers for regulation strategies, encouraging them to work collectively, and offering more professional development programs are likely to develop a stronger sense of self-efficacy among teachers.

Background: Studies have reported that medication literacy had a positive effect on medication adherence in patients with hypertension. However, little is known about the mechanism underlying this relationship in patients with hypertension.Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of self-efficacy between medication literacy and medication adherence.Methods: A total of 790 patients with hypertension were investigated using the Chinese Medication Literacy Scale for Hypertensive Patients (C-MLSHP), the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) and the Medication Adherence Self-efficacy Scale-Revision (MASES-R). Hierarchical regression and the bootstrap approach were used to analyze the mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between medication literacy and medication adherence.Results: A total of 60.9% of hypertensive patients were low adherent to their antihypertensive drug regimens. Self‐efficacy had a significant positive correlation with medication literacy (r= 0.408, p &lt; 0.001) and medication adherence (r = 0.591, p &lt; 0.001). Self-efficacy accounts for 28.7% of the total mediating effect on the relationship between medication literacy and adherence to antihypertensive regimens for hypertensive patients.Conclusion: More than half of the hypertensive patients in the study were low adherent to antihypertensive regimens. Self-efficacy had a partial significant mediating effect on the relationship between medication literacy and medication adherence. Therefore, it was suggested that hypertensive patients’ medication adherence might be improved and driven by increasing self-efficacy. Targeted interventions to improve patients’ self-efficacy should be developed and implemented. In addition, health care providers should also be aware of the importance of medication literacy assessment and promotion in patients with hypertension.
