The distinctive paper is detoded to problem of “legitimization” of numerical modelling of wind loads and impacts on buildings and structures. General information about computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and its development prospects is presented. The main advantages and disadvantages of numerical simulation compared with tests in wind tunnels (wind tunnel tests) are considered. Besides, information about the second modification of corresponding Russian design codes (SP 20.13330.2016 “SNiP 2.01.07-85* Loads and effects”) is provided. Prospects for the further development of numerical modelling and its applications for solution of problems of construction aerodynamics are given.

AbstractNumerical simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method is one way of predicting airflow characteristics on the model. This method is widely used because it is relatively inexpensive and faster in getting desired results compared with performing direct testing. The correctness of a computational simulation output is highly dependent on the input and how it was processed. In this paper, simulation is done on Onera M6 Wing, to investigate the effect of a turbulence model’s application on the accuracy of the computational result. The choice of Onera M6 Wing as a simulation’s model is due to its extensive database of testing results from various wind tunnels in the world. Among Turbulence models used are Spalart-Allmaras, K-Epsilon, K-Omega, and SST.Keywords: CFD, fluent, Model, Turbulence, Onera M6, Spalart-Allmaras, K-Epsilon, K-Omega, SST.AbstraksSimulasi numerik dengan menggunakan metode Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) merupakan salah satu cara untuk memprediksi karakteristik suatu aliran udara yang terjadi pada model. Metode ini banyak digunakan karena sifatnya yang relatif murah dan cepat untuk mendapatkan hasil dibandingkan dengan melakukan pengujian langsung. Benar tidak hasil sebuah simulasi komputasi sangat tergantung pada inputan yang diberikan serta cara memproses data inputan tersebut. Pada tulisan ini dilakukan simulasi dengan menggunakan sayap onera M6 dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan model turbulensi terhadap keakuratan hasil komputasi. Pilihan sayap onera M6 sebagai model simulasi dikarenakan model tersebut sudah memiliki database hasil pengujian yang cukup lengkap dan sudah divalidasi dari berbagai terowongan angin di dunia. Model turbulensi yang digunakan diantaranya Spalart-Allmaras, K-Epsilon, K-Omega dan SST.Kata Kunci : CFD, fluent, Model, Turbulensi, Onera M6, Spalart-Allmaras, K-Epsilon, K-Omega, SST.

Until recently, water treatment plants were frequently designed solely on the basis of the biological, chemical and physical constraints of processes. Nowadays, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software enables the dimensioning of water treatment processes by taking into account the real hydraulic behaviour of processes. That has be done for the Coliban Water Aqua 2000 project, which consists of the construction of three water treatment plants. The disinfection performance of three ozone contactors were compared using the CFD software, Fluent. Moreover, the CFD application has been extended to a large range of water treatment processes in recent years. The paper presents several of these: flocculation tanks, UV reactors and secondary settling tanks.

It is well established that strakes are effective at suppressing vortex-induced vibrations (VIV). Fairings are an attractive alternative to helical strakes, because they are a low drag VIV suppression solution. The paper presents an evaluation of a fairing design, based on numerical simulations — to be complemented at a later stage with current tank testing. This paper documents the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) of the evaluation: (1) 3-D CFD in the laboratory scale: 4.5 inch pipe, 3 ft/s current speed, (2) 3-D CFD in the full scale: 14 inch riser, 4 knots current speed, and (3) 3-D FEA of the full-scale fairing module latching mechanism, under service loads corresponding to 4 knots current speed. The analysis results show that the fairing design (1) is effective at suppressing VIV, (2) yields a low drag coefficient (0.52 at Re ∼ 106), and (3) its latching mechanism is adequate for use in calm sea states with 4 knots current speeds.

This paper adopted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, used k-ε RNG turbulence model-closed control differential equations for numerical simulation. Through numerical simulation and analysis of wind environment in a middle school campus, the round wind field under dominant wind direction was got in the summer and winter. According to the results of velocity field and pressure field, analysis the wind environment, compared the influence of wind direction and surrounding buildings space to the natural ventilation, provided guidance introduce for the layout of the school.

Honeycomb ceramic is the key component of the regenerative system. The numerical simulation was performed using FLUENT, a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, to compare simulation results to the test data. The regenerative process of a honeycomb ceramic regenerator was simulated under different conditions. Experiments were carried out on honeycomb regenerators that are contained in a methane oxidation reactor. The calculated temperatures of flue gas inlet were compared with the ones measured. The tendency of the temperature is the same as the experiment.

This paper aims to apply computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate air flow and air flow with water droplets, as a reasonable hypothesis for real flows, in order to evaluate a vertical separator vessel with inclined half-pipe inlet device (slope inlet). Thus, this type was compared to a separator vessel without inlet device (straight inlet). The results demonstrated a different performance for the two types in terms of air distribution and liquid removal efficiency.

Demonstrating how numerical modelling, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), can be used to validate results from detailed physical wind tunnel models of FLNG vessels and floating systems is the objective of this extended abstract. 3D rapid prototyping is used to build detailed physical wind tunnel models. This physical model (normally of an approximate scale of 1:200) is then placed in a wind tunnel facility to measure the time histories of the wind loads for a full range of wind directions and a range of drafts. CFD is then used to validate the wind tunnel modelling results. Numerical modelling can also be used to analyse a number of different issues such as the impact of turbine exhaust dispersion, and turbulence on helicopter operations and resulting helideck availability. This extended abstract discusses the importance of wind tunnel testing and numerical modelling during the design phase. The idea that numerical modelling does not replace pure theoretical or experimental results, but acts to complement them with gaining a greater overall picture, will be highlighted. Findings will be presented to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches, and highlight results such as wind shear and turbulence impacts being best calculated through wind tunnel testing. The extended abstract demonstrates that, ideally during the design process, wind tunnel testing should be followed by numerical modelling to interpolate results.

This chapter describes the utilization of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with neural network (NN) for analysis of medical devices. First, the concept of mathematical modeling and its use for solving engineering problems is presented followed by an introduction to CFD with a brief summary of the numerical techniques currently available. A brief introduction to the standard optimization strategies for NN and the various methodologies in use are also presented. A case study of the design and optimization of scaffolds for tissue engineering heart valve using the combined CFD and NN approach is presented and discussed. This chapter concludes with a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the combined NN and CFD techniques and their future potential prospective.

This paper makes use of the method of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to group the Hydraulic muffler of network grid and makes a fluidic analysis of the rectangular wave input signal of the hydraulic muffler without intubation noise absorption effect. The result manifests that the employment of CFD simulation technology to hydraulic muffler can provide evident theoretical support for further development and study of hydraulic muffler, and is possible to lay a foundation for continuous studies of the hydraulic muffler.

A three dimensional fluid flow model was set up in this paper, based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the elasticity theory. Using the finite volume method, a 120° bend was taken as a research object to simulate the erosion to the wall of fluid with sparse particles, finally, to determine the most severe wear areas.At the same time, the distribution of two-phase flows pressure and velocity was analyzed in 45° and 90° bends, then tracked the trajectory of the particles. The results show that the 90°bend has the smallest wear area and particle distribution or combination property is the best.
