AbstractPapaya contain pectin which is a water-soluble fiber. Pectin has the ablity to bind bile acids and eliminated out of the body through the feces. Decrease in the amount of bile acids in intestinal lumen causing liver uses cholesterol to synthesize bile acids blood. The purpose of this study was to see the effect of papaya extract on total cholesterol, HDL and LDL of male rats. This is an experimental research design using 20 white male rats were divided into four groups : control group and group treated with papaya extract a dose of 0,5 ml, 1 ml per 200 gr/body weight orally for 15 days. Results showed a decrease in everage total cholesterol, LDL and increased serum levels of rats after administration of papaya extract after 15 days wereARTIKEL PENELITIAN30significantly (p<0,05). Hypercholesterolemia is an increase in total cholesterol levels in the blood beyond the normal limits. Excess cholesterol levels in the blood will have an impact on degenerative diseases. Brown rice (oryza nivara) is a rice rich in vitamins, minerals and contain water soluble fiber that can help bind cholesterol, then throw it out of the body. Regular consumption of brown rice is very beneficial for health that can reduce levels of LDL. The aim of this research is to know the effectiveness of brown rice rice to total cholesterol level in hypercholesterolemia patient in Vilage Sea Pineleng District of Minahasa Regency. The type of this research is Quasi Eksperimen with One Group of Pretest and Posttest Design. The sample in this study is the entire population of hypercholesterolemia patients recorded in Posbindu Village Sea Pineleng District Minahasa regency that meets the inclusion criteria. Rice brown rice is given for 8 consecutive days every morning, day and night. Total cholesterol levels were measured before and after administration of brown rice. Data analysis using Paired t-test. The results showed that the total cholesterol level before the study was the highest of 360 mg / dl, the lowest was 216 mg / dl, and after the highest total cholesterol was 298 mg / dl, the lowest was 164 mg / dl. The result of statistical test shows that p = 0,019 (p <0,05), which means that there is difference of total cholesterol before and after giving of rice of red rice to hypercholesterolemia patient in Vilage Sea Pineleng Sub-district of Minahasa Regency.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of soluble fiber or fructooligosaccharide (FOS) supplementation upon trinitrobenzene sulphonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats. METHODS: 64 Wistar rats were given water, soluble fiber or FOS intragastrically during 14 days prior to colitis induction with TNBS (n=48) or rectal enema with water (n=16; control group). On the 7th or 14th day following colitis induction the rats were weighed and euthanized in order to determine the colon weight/length ratio and macroscopic and microscopic scores. RESULTS: On the 7th day following colitis induction the body weight had decreased significantly, the colon weight/length ratio had increased and macroscopic and microscopic colon lesions were observed. On the 14th day following colitis induction no difference in body weight was observed, in spite of the persistence of macroscopic and microscopic lesions and increased colon weight/length ratio. Supplementation with soluble fiber or FOS did not revert colon lesions or any of the study parameters. Supplementation with FOS, but not with fiber, was associated with increased colon weight/length ratio on the 14th day. CONCLUSION: Supplementation with soluble fiber or FOS produced no significant impact on TNBS-induced colitis in rats.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the attenuating effect of given selenium and/or magnesium on ethanol-induced oxidative stress, disturbances of liver function and cholesterol metabolism. Forty male rats were divided into five groups: C – control, Et – intoxicated with alcohol (15% solution in drinking water), Et + Mg, Et + Se, Et + Mg + Se – intoxicated with alcohol and supplemented with selenium (0.4 mg Se/l water), magnesium (100 mg Mg/l water) and combination of Se and Mg, respectively. The experiment was carried out over the 3 months. The results show that the chronic ingestion of alcohol induces lipid peroxidation and histopathological changes in liver. Supplementation with magnesium only partially alleviates oxidative stress and damages in this tissue. The both selenium alone and combination of magnesium and selenium significantly elevated total antioxidant status (TAS) in serum, activity of glutathione peroxidase and ratio of reduced glutathione to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) in liver and retarded oxidative stress and histopathological changes in this tissue. Chronic administration of ethanol (alone and with magnesium) resulted in significant decrease in the serum total cholesterol and retardation in the body weight gain in comparison with the control group. In the groups supplemented with selenium and selenium and magnesium simultaneously, concentration of total cholesterol in serum and body gains was similar to the control group. Supplementation of Se or selenium and magnesium simultaneously significantly enhances antioxidant defence and is more effective against alcohol-induced oxidative stress, disturbance of liver function and cholesterol metabolism than the separate use of magnesium.

Systemic damage of the organs, including the thyroid gland, is one of the key factors in the pathogenesis of burn disease due to thermal skin burns. The aim of this study was to investigate the indices of the cell cycle and DNA fragmentation of thyroid gland cells in rats with the use of infusion of 0.9% NaCl solution against the background of thermal skin burns. Experimental studies were conducted on 60 white male rats weighing 160-180 g, which was subjected to thermal burns of the skin of 2-3 degrees with a total area of 21-23% of the body surface. The first 7 days rats were infused with 0.9% NaCl solution into the inferior vena cava. Animals were removed from the experiment by decapitation (after 1, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 30 days). DNA content in the nuclei of the cells of the thyroid gland of rats was determined by flow cytometry. The statistical processing of the obtained results was carried out in the license package “STATISTICA 6.1” using nonparametric estimation methods. After 1 day after thermal skin damage and using 0.9% NaCl solution, lower (p<0.05) values of the S-phase index (0.234±0.094) were found compared to the control group without burn (0.652±0.134). The maximum decrease (p<0.01) of S-phase indicators (0.622±0.110 and 0.214±0.105, respectively) and a significant increase (p<0.01) of the SUB-G0G1 interval (5.288±0.840) compared to similar control group values (2.594±0.628) is observed after 3 days. The S-phase against the background of the introduction of 0.9% NaCl solution and thermal skin burn remained significantly lower than those of the similar control groups at 7 (p<0.01), 14 (p<0.05) and 21 days (p<0.05). At 14 days after thermal skin injury, the SUB-G0G1 interval (p<0.05) was lower than in the control group of rats. After 30 days, the G0G1 phase parameters were significantly lower (p<0.01), and the G2+M phase values were significantly (p<0.01) higher than those in the control group at the same time. Thus, it was found that 0.9% NaCl solution was not effective enough to correct cell division disorders during the entire observation period after skin burns.

Introduction. The study of the effects of air smoke during natural fires on the reproductive system is the actual scientific problem at present. Material and methods. The experimental study took place in 2 stages. At the first stage of the study, white male rats were exposed to the smoke-bearing effects of wildfire for 7 days (4 hours a day), and at the second stage, 5 days a week (4 hours a day) for one month. Immediately after the end of the exposure, the animals were decapitated under light ether anesthesia to study the morphofunctional state of the reproductive system, which included counting the total number of spermatogonia, the number of tubules with desquamated epithelium, as well as determining the spermatogenesis index and the number of Leydig cells. Results. The functional state of the reproductive system of male white rats after exposure to smoke for 1 week did not have statistically significant differences from the animals of the control group. At the same time, an increment in the duration of exposure (4 weeks) led to significant morphological and functional disorders of the reproductive system of male white rats, characterized by a decrease in the spermatogenesis index with a simultaneous decrease in the percentage of spermatogonia and the number of interstitial Leydig cells. Discussion. Male reproductive health can be a sensitive marker of environmental factors, and there is no evidence of smoke from natural fires in modern literature. This study justifies the need to develop new approaches to the diagnosis and prevention of adverse effects on the body for a long stay in a smoke area. Conclusion. The results of the study indicate the prolonged exposure to combustion products released during a forest fire to lead to inhibition of reproductive function in male white rats.
