This article aims at analyzing how the redefinition of the subjects of the narrative staging, channel, and semiological codes determines the renewal of the literary contract of the short story "Conto de Escola" in its 2002 reprint by Cosac Naify publishers, taking into account the Semiolinguistic Discourse Analysis Theory and, in a subsidiary way, the studies of editorial paratexts and visual forms. The Machadian short story, originally published in 1884, was reprinted, in a book of the same name, as a verbal-visual hybrid text by the publisher's initiative and the work of Nelson Cruz, who authored the illustrations and the editorial project. The most relevant implications of this process of renewal of the literary contract are the amplification of the effects of meaning and, more particularly, the intensification of the pathemic effects as a result of the word-image interaction, which is inserted in a material and discursive mise-en-scène, organized by the editorial paratexts. This results in inscribing children as target readers, unlike previous contracts, which now allows for the book under analysis to be identified as potential literature for children.---Original in English.

Bliss is one of Katherine Mansfield’s masterpieces, which is a short story containing a large number of discourses, i.e. speeches. Previous scholars analyzed this classical novel from many perspectives, among them the discursive power is less mentioned and is worth discussing. This paper applying critical discourse analysis theory on discursive power and the interrelation between discourse and power, discusses the non-equivalence between the identity and discursive power of the heroine, Bertha, aiming to provide a new perspective to appreciate the novel and unveil the power in discourse of the novel.

AbstractThis article highlights the importance of multimodality in the study of discourse with a discussion of a segment from the Turkish adaptation of the global television format, The Voice. In the segment under discussion, a contestant is disqualified from the show by the host for her allegedly disrespectful style of speech towards the coaches. Departing from traditional (sociolinguistic) critical discourse analysis, the article seeks to unveil the deep power discourse hidden in the multimodal landscape of the show by extending the scope of discourse analysis to include both linguistic and non-linguistic modes of communication and representation such as the camerawork, and mise-en-scene. The findings shed light on the inherently asymmetrical nature of the show and how the contestant's highly non-standard language and manners are demonized (multimodally) while the coaches and the host find a relatively less judgmental environment as the “authority” in the show.

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) is the choice of analysis theory offering the effective tools to analyse the language difficulties and vagueness. One of the systemic analysis tools is clause complex which can simplify the structural and grammatical meanings of the analysed texts through the use of taxis systems and logico-semantic relations (Sagheer Eid, 2016). The proposed study is aimed at analysing systemic functional analysis of clause complex realised in a short story adopting Hallidayan linguistics perspective. The short story is taken from the collection of short stories entitled “The Whispering Knights” by Clare West. From the aforementioned short stories collection, the writers take a short story entitled “The Witch’s Brew” written by Penelope Lively. By means of a descriptive study under Systemic Functional Linguistics theory as suggested by Halliday & Matthiessen (2014), the writers employ the analysis of taxis systems which cover elaboration, extension, and enhancement. Besides, logico-semantic relation is also analysed which covers projection and expansion. The findings reveal that there are 158 clause complexes which consist of 58 clause complexes of parataxis which are realized 37%, and 40 clause complexes of hypotaxis which are realised 25.3%. In conclusion, the short story is written by the dominant of parataxis then hypotaxis constructions.

This study aims at revealing how the discursive practices and the discourse on alcoholism in the Native Americans is produced and contested in a short story entitled The Reckoning by Joy Harjo. The problem in this study is approached by Foucauldian concept of discourse production procedure. The method applied here is the Foucauldian discourse analysis by examining the problem through the process of formation including external and internal exclusion. Central to the analysis is that alcoholism is produced as taboo through the mother character which limits the general understanding about alcoholism; hence this discourse is possible to produce by the subject whose credentials can validate the truth. This discourse is also affirmed by the contextual prohibition which authoritatively can state the truth about alcoholism. This is further contested in the current society of how being an alcoholic would be considered as a non-native American way of life. The result indicates that alcoholism among Native American society becomes the discourse within which constraints produce considerable barriers to expose or address to this topic

This paper provides a comprehensive explanation of the theoretical foundations of multimodal discourse analysis theory as applied to speaking instructional design. The specific application of multimodal theory in the teaching of elementary English speaking classrooms is explored through the teaching design of elementary English speaking classrooms, the teaching implementation of multimodal teaching design is carried out, and the effect of the teaching practice of elementary English speaking guided by multimodal discourse analysis theory is comprehensively evaluated through classroom observation method, questionnaire survey method, and interview method, combined with the teaching evaluation and teaching implementation effect, which is the multimodal teaching design. The paper also summarizes the findings and shortcomings of the study. Through the teaching design and implementation, the advantages of multimodal teaching are obvious; it can combine with modern advanced teaching techniques to create more realistic communicative situations in the classroom, gather and present various modal resources and information, and ensure rich and diverse language input; students can receive various sensory stimuli in the classroom, deepen their memory and experience of language, increase the interest of classroom teaching, and improve students’ participation. It also increases the interest of the classroom and enhances students’ participation and motivation. Based on multimodal theory, the author designed a multimodal teaching framework for a semester-long speaking course in the speaking classroom for reference. The fuzzy measures were constructed based on subsets of language segments containing 10 phonemes belonging to the same HDP set. Finally, linguistic scores are given by the Surgeon integral model based on the plausibility of the system and the fuzzy measures. The experimental results based on Sphinx-4 show that the evaluation model yields plausible and stable evaluation results for the 3 test sets at an average correct recognition rate of 84.7% of phonemes.

Kata kunci: ideologi, bahasa politik, analisis wacana kritis AbstractThe current study aims at: (1) to explore the ideology conceived in Soekarno’s political language as one of the nation founding fathers and the proclaimer of Indonesia independence, (2) to explore the motivations behind the birth of ideology in the language, and (3) to see the socio-cultural changes as the result of Soekarno’s political ideology. To achieve the research objectives, researcher used Critical Discourse Analysis Theory (CDA) of Fairclough (1989, 1995, 2005, 2006) as the main theory, and the theory of Ideology as a supporting theory. The method applied in data collection was documentation method, while the method applied in data analysis was descriptive qualitative method that applied based on three analysis levels of Fairclough CDA theory. The results show that the ideology contained in Soekarno’s political language is the ideology of ‘unity as an important thing’, the ideology of ‘revolution as an integral part of the Indonesian nation soul’, and the ideology of ‘imperialism as the main enemy of the Indonesia’. The ideology needs to be lived for the sake of Indonesia’s endurance, security and peace. Furthermore, the ideology is based on a plural nation state and the realization that static nature is a barrier to the progress of a nation. The ideology contents have brought changes in the way of communication and the way of Indonesian nation life. Keywords: ideology, political language, critical discourse analysis

Emotions and verbal violence: volcanic impoliteness and strategic affective impoliteness Taking the Discourse Analysis as the theoretical framework, the present article explores the relations between emotion(s) and verbal violence through the analysis of volcanic impoliteness and strategic affective impoliteness. Starting from the premise that each of these manifestations of impoliteness implies a different type of management and manipulation of emotions, my approach will be twofold: I will try to bring out the functioning of emotions in my corpus (composed of several extracts of TV talk-shows) and to compare the two forms of verbal violence. Indeed, the analysis of my corpus shows that, although volcanic and affective strategic impoliteness may have the same form, they differ with regard to their temporality, to they spontaneity and sincerity, and especially to their mise en scène: the complex mise en scène of the latter provides three portraits (the hero, the antihero and the victim) and three speeches (denunciation of some sort of injustice, accusation, victimization).
