The Ciénaga Grande of Santa Marta is one of the estuarine ecosystems of greatest environmental, social and economic importance in the Colombian Caribbean. However, its fisheries have a strong impact on the fish populations that live there. Objective. An experimental sampling of the catches of lisa (Mugil incilis) with a “boliche” encircling gillnet was carried out to estimate the selection parameters. Materials and methods. Catches carry out with mesh size of 2, 2½ and 3-inch were compared and evaluated. The selectivity parameters were estimated from the SELECT method. The wedge sole (Dicologoglossa cuneata, Moreau 1881) is a commercially important species for the artisanal fleet operating off the south-western Iberian Peninsula. During 2004 and 2005 a study was undertaken aiming to provide a scientific basis for management. Data collection included information on aspects of the fishery, spawning season, size at first maturity, tangle and gill-net selectivity. Seven nominal mesh sizes were used (40, 45 and 50 mm tangle nets and 40, 50, 60 and 70 mm gill-nets). Spawning lasts from December to June, with peaks in March and May. Length at first maturity for females was estimated at 18.5 cm. Catch rates decreased sharply with increasing mesh size, with tangle nets providing the highest yields. The log-normal selectivity model provided the best fit for specimens that were wedged. The higher catch-per-unit-effort of the smaller mesh sizes and the modal length of the fitted selectivity curve being below the size-at-maturity for wedge sole, suggests that the 50 mm nominal mesh size tangle net is the most appropriate for ensuring the fishery sustainability. Nevertheless, the minimum legal size should increase to at least 18 cm and a time–area closure should be implemented off the Guadiana River mouth.

A preliminary assessment of surf-zone and estuarine line fish was carried out in the DwesaCwebe Marine Protected Area (MPA), on the Wild Coast, South Africa. The purpose was to provide baseline data on inshore line-fish stocks in the MPA. A total of 28 species was recorded, of which 53% have a conservation status reflecting some concern and 43% are endemic to southern Africa. This highlights the value of the MPA for protection of important line-fish species. Within the MPA, localised differences were detected in species diversity, size frequency and catch per unit effort between unexploited and illegally exploited areas. These differences were more prominent in slow growing, long-lived species. It thus appears that illegal exploitation is negatively affecting fish populations within the MPA, which counteract and potentially could eliminate the benefits of fish protection typically associated with no-take MPAs. These results highlight the need for improved law enforcement and better communication with neighbouring communities to increase awareness. It is further recommended that the current no-take status of the MPA should be maintained. In addition, baseline fisheries information was collected on certain fish species that could be used to inform future conservation management of the MPA.Conservation implications: The Dwesa-Cwebe Marine Protected Area is unique and important for the conservation of key surf zone and estuarine fish species. However there is a significant risk to the fish populations due to illegal exploitation. Key interventions should include enhanced law enforcement but, more important, the creation of alternative livelihoods and long term sustainable benefits to local communities.

Shifts in the distribution and aggregation patterns of exploited fish populations can affect the behavior and success of fishermen and can complicate the interpretation of fisheries-dependent data. Starting in 2006, coinciding with an increase in sand lance (Ammodytes spp.) abundance, Gulf of Maine Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) concentrated on Stellwagen Bank, a small (405 km2) underwater plateau located in the southwestern portion of the larger (52 461 km2) stock area. The cod fishery in turn concentrated on Stellwagen Bank. Specifically, the proportion of Gulf of Maine cod landings caught in a single 10-minute square area (260 km2) encompassing the tip of Stellwagen Bank increased from 12% in 2005 to 45% in 2010. An increase in landings per unit effort in the fishery coincided with the concentration of the fleet on Stellwagen Bank. Overall, both fisheries-independent and fisheries-dependent data indicate that an increase in sand lance abundance resulted in cod aggregating in a small and predictable area where they were easily caught by the fishery. More broadly, this work illustrates how changes in the distribution patterns of fish and fisherman can decouple trends in abundance and fisheries catch per unit effort.

SummaryMany factors influence the dynamics of fisheries and feedback mechanisms amongst these factors are poorly understood. The ecological systems are too large and complex to conduct controlled experiments and economic adjustments to changes in fish populations defy traditional equilibrium analysis. New modelling approaches are required to identify the driving forces behind the dynamics of exploited fish populations, assess likely consequences of alternative management measures, and achieve consensus among stakeholders. We present an interdisciplinary modelling approach that can be used easily to assess dynamic consequences of alternative assumptions for certain key biological and economic parameters, and incorporates the input of various stakeholder groups in the fishery. Contributions of scientists, economists and managers to the model can be augmented with contributions from the fisherfolk. Our approach is illustrated by a dynamic computer model capturing the interactions of three demersal fish species on Georges Bank, namely Atlantic Cod (Gadus morhua), Haddock (Melanogramus aeglefimts) and Pollack (Pollachius virens), population sizes of which are assumed to be density-dependent for the purposes of the model and are significantly affected by management decisions. The model addresses how management measures for one species influence the population dynamics of other commercially exploited species. Various scenarios are run to explore the implications of viable management strategies under alternative assumptions on the driving forces behind complex ecological-economic processes. The analyses indicate that neither small reductions in effort nor mesh size increases are likely to prevent the further demise of the Georges Bank ground fisheries, and, in fact, stocks of the three targeted species may decline. Alternative management measures seem to be necessary to prevent collapse, and might include various strategies, such as effort controls and mesh size reductions, in conjunction with a dramatic change in fishing technology. The assessment and viability of alternative management measures in turn require that consensus is generated among stakeholders about data and models.

Part I contains a discussion of tagging estimates and the errors associated with these estimates. It includes a general formula that covers all types of tagging plan from which are derived the formulae for the Peterson and Schnabel types. Methods of estimating precision are summarized and some simple approximate formulae are presented which should be useful in the planning of tagging experiments.Part II is concerned with population estimates based on catch-effort data. Earlier results are summarized with some simplification of the derivations and some slight extensions.Part III discusses briefly some possibilities when both tagging data and catch-effort records are available.Part IV presents the results of some experimental sampling, using beads of different colours to represent tagged and untagged fish.

In 1980 and 1995, the European hake ( Merluccius merluccius ) population off the Balearic Islands (northwestern Mediterranean) underwent changes at both the individual level and the population level. There was a sharp decrease in abundance that coincided with a change in the seasonal catch-per-unit-effort pattern in 1980. A new population scenario emerged after 1980 characterized by an increase in the intrinsic growth rate and a decrease in carrying capacity; however, catchability remained the same. An age-structure truncation could have caused these changes, making the population more dependent on year-to-year recruitment. A change in size structure also occurred in 1995, which was evidenced by a sudden decrease in the mean length-at-age (L) and abundance of recruits and a change in the density-dependent effect on recruits. As the Mediterranean trawl fishery mainly harvests recruits and juveniles and fishery harvesting induces adaptive changes in life history traits, the sharp decrease in L of recruits could be explained as a growth reduction due to the selective pressure to stay under mesh size for longer and thus maximize survival until reproduction. These individual and population transitions explain the changes in the response to the environmental forcing observed in the European hake off the Balearic Islands.

Abstract Phototaxis in climbing perch (Anabas testudineus) was investigated by subjecting fish to LED light traps (blue, green, yellow, orange, red, white) and control (total 13 traps). The trap was constructed of polyamide (PA) nylon monofilament (31.75 mm mesh size), fastened around two wire ring frames (∅ 490 mm) with a net height of 270 mm. A lamp was placed on the bottom of the trap. 96 individuals, consisting of 34 males and 62 females, were analysed. Both continuous and blinking light traps were considerably higher in the number of catch compared to the control. The body size of catch ranged from 76-135 mm TL and 8.00-55.00 g W. The mean YPUEs (yield per unit effort) for male and female were 4.00 ± 2.25 and 7.00 ± 4.50 g trap−1 trial-1, respectively. The CPUEs (catch per unit effort) for continuous, blinking light traps and the control ranged from 0.43 to 0.93, 0.21 to 0.86, and 0.21 fish trap−1night−1, respectively. The mean condition factor (K) values of 2.10 ± 0.40 for males and 2.13 ± 0.34 for females indicate fish with better condition. Positive group responses of fish were more pronounced in the middle size classes between 90 and 109 mm TL. Negative allometric growth pattern (b) (1.7271-1.8828) was observed, indicating that the culture system should be refined. A. testudineus showed positive phototaxis to the “colors of light”. In addition, efforts to collect climbing perch from the wild for breeding and commercial purposes may benefit from this study.

This community, even holding the title to the land and recognition by the Fundação Cultural Palmares (FCP), faces challenges for its self-preservation, since it is located 8 km from Ananindeua, the second most populous municipality in the State of Pará. The study took place through the collection of data in loco, as well as bibliographic-documentary survey, which were analyzed in the light of Sen's theory of the right to freedoms (2010) and Leff's theory of environmental rationality (2015). Due to the proximity to the urban area, in the vicinity of the community, real estate developments were observed that have been promoting impacts related to environmental sanitation; in addition to these, social problems related to violence and poor access to public policies also stand out. The study showed that the community, despite suffering a strong impact from urban expansion on its territory, seeks to resist and organize, supported by other social bodies, in defense of the right to freedom to maintain their way of life based on traditional production and conservation of its natural environment.
