The story of the deposition and death of Mac Con is told in The Battle of Mag Mucrama, §§59–77 of Stokes' edition, RC 13, 460–467, and there is an account of his death in the “historical” tract in Laud 610, edited by Meyer, Fianaigecht 28 (RIA Todd Lecture Series xvi, 1910). There is an independent story in YBL, which is here edited for the first time, and may represent one of the sources upon which the author of The Battle of Mag Mucrama has drawn. He did not merely copy it, for his text varies considerably in vocabulary, and by omission and addition. Yet the two texts are closely related, and Stokes' edition, referred to in the notes as L, has been of great value to me in reading and interpreting the text presented here. According to this text Mac Con was king of Ireland for thirty years, and this is also the tradition of the tract in Laud. In L he reigns for seven years (§59), but the alternative tradition is recorded in §77. In the LL text of the Battle of Crinna the period is twenty-seven years, LL fcs. 328 f 16 (O'Grady, Silva Gadelicaii, 491). The Annals of Tigernach say: Ailii aiunt Lugaid Mac Con post hoc bellum regnase [annis xviii] uel xxx ut alii aiunt, RC 17, 11. The source of the words in square brackets in Stokes' edition is not stated. It would be necessary to examine unpublished historical poems, genealogies, and regnal lists in order to trace the origin of these conflicting numbers. Confusion often arises from the use of Roman numerals in manuscripts.

Abstract University students were screened using items from the Psychopathic Personality Inventory and divided into high (n = 13) and low (n = 11) Psychopathic Personality Trait (PPT) groups. The P300 component of the event-related potential (ERP) was recorded as each group completed a two-block autobiographical oddball task, responding honestly during the first (Phone) block, in which oddball items were participants' home phone numbers, and then feigning amnesia in response to approximately 50% of items in the second (Birthday) block in which oddball items were participants' birthdates. Bootstrapping of peak-to-peak amplitudes correctly identified 100% of low PPT and 92% of high PPT participants as having intact recognition. Both groups demonstrated malingering-related P300 amplitude reduction. For the first time, P300 amplitude and topography differences were observed between honest and deceptive responses to Birthday items. No main between-group P300 effects resulted. Post-hoc analysis revealed between-group differences in a frontally located post-P300 component. Honest responses were associated with late frontal amplitudes larger than deceptive responses at frontal sites in the low PPT group only.

775 Background: TAS-102 is comprised of an antineoplastic thymidine-based nucleoside analog, trifluridine (FTD), and a thymidine phosphorylase inhibitor, tipiracil. Primary results of the RECOURSE trial demonstrated a significant improvement in overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) with TAS-102 vs placebo (pbo) in patients (pts) with metastatic colorectal cancer refractory/intolerant to standard therapies. Neutropenia is a common TAS-102–associated adverse event and it has been hypothesized to be associated with a relatively high FTD concentration in pts. Methods: RECOURSE data were analyzed post hoc for correlations between onset of neutropenia (Grade 3/4) and survival benefit. Results: Of 533 pts given TAS-102, 75 (14%) developed Grade 3/4 neutropenia in treatment cycle 1, 86 (16%) for the first time in cycle 2, and 39 (7%) for the first time in cycle ≥3. Onset of neutropenia at any cycle was associated with longer median OS and PFS compared with no neutropenia. A consistent survival benefit was observed regardless of the cycle of initial onset of neutropenia, as demonstrated by the hazard ratio (against cycle-matched pbo control groups) and corresponding median OS differences (Table). Conclusions: An association between occurrence of earliest onset of Grade 3/4 neutropenia and survival benefit was observed. The data indicate that such survival benefit occurred regardless of whether the initial onset of neutropenia occurred after cycle 1, cycle 2, or later. Further analyses are required to fully determine whether FTD pharmacokinetics correlate with TAS-102 efficacy and onset of neutropenia, and whether cycle initiation delays affect response. The signing on Wednesday, 14 January, 2015 of the celebrated Abuja Peace Accord by the presidential candidates of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and eleven others, including the major opposition party, All Progressives Congress (APC) signaled for the first time a conscious effort by Nigerian political gladiators to give peace a chance. Although unique in the sense that two retired foremost international diplomats were deeply involved in drafting and moderating the signing of the Peace Accord, a critical-analytical dissection of the spirit and content as well as the practical benefits and weaknesses of the agreement reveal a thin success in a post-hoc mode. This paper teases out the forces and factors that were responsible for the semi-success and semi-failure of the stated goals of the Accord.

Vessel strikes have been documented around the world and frequently figure as a top human cause of large whale mortality. The shipping lanes in the Santa Barbara Channel, California and nearby waters have some of the highest predicted whale mortality from vessel strikes in the United States waters of the eastern Pacific. Beginning in 2007, National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration requested voluntary vessel speed reductions (VSRs) for vessels greater than 300 GT traveling in the Santa Barbara Channel shipping routes to decrease whale mortality from ship strikes. We employed a ship strike model using whale density data and automatic identification system (AIS) vessel data to estimate mortality under several management scenarios. To assess the effect of the VSR on strike mortality, we bootstrapped speeds from vessels greater than 19 m long that transited when no VSR was in place. Finally, we calculated the predicted mortality for hypothetical cooperation scenarios by artificially adding speed caps post-hoc to real vessel transits. For 2012–2018, we estimated that in our study area on average during summer/fall (June–November) 8.9 blue, 4.6 humpback, and 9.7 fin whales were killed from ship strikes each year (13–26% greater than previously estimated). We evaluated winter/spring (January–April) humpback mortality for the first time, resulting in an estimate of 5.7 deaths on average per year. Poor cooperation with the VSR led to low (5% maximum) to no reductions in the estimated number of strike mortalities. Evaluating potential scenarios showed that if 95% cooperation occurred in the lanes, whale deaths there would decrease by 22–26%. Adding VSRs with similar cooperation levels at the northern end of the Santa Barbara Channel and south of Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary could decrease estimated strike mortalities in those areas by 30%. If VSRs were added and cooperation reached 95% there and in the lanes, we estimate a 21–29% decrease in vessel strike mortalities could be attained relative to estimated mortality in the entire study area. To decrease the vessel strike related whale mortalities in this region, we recommend expanding the VSR areas and increasing cooperation voluntarily, or considering mandatory speed limits if desired cooperation levels cannot otherwise be met.

Abstract Background Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are emerging as novel risk factors for cardiovascular events (CVEs). In vitro evidence suggested that PCSK9 production may be elicited by LPS via oxidative stress, However, their relationship in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) has not been investigated. Methods Post-hoc analysis of a prospective, single centre cohort study of 907 patients with non-valvular AF. At baseline, PCSK9, LPS and NADPH oxidase (sNOX2-dp) were measured. We also assessed adherence to Mediterranean Diet (Med-Diet). PCSK9 and LPS were correlated to incidence of CVEs. Results At multivariate analysis, with PCSK9 above the median as dependent variable we found that high adherence to Med-Diet and antiplatelet drugs were inversely correlated to PCSK9 (odds ratio [OR] 0.737 95% Confidence interval [CI] 0.643–0.845 p=0.001 and OR 0.437 95% CI 0.219–0.871 p=0.017 respectively), while sNOX2-dp and LPS concentrations (OR 1.759 C.I. 95% 1.167–2.650, p=0.007 and OR 1.727 C.I. 95% 1.147–2.600 p=0.009 respectively) were directly correlated. In particular use of oil and wine were negatively associated to high PCSK9 levels (OR 0.376 95% CI 0.185–0.763, p=0.001 and OR 0.460 95% CI 0.289–0.733 p=0.007, respectively). Patients with concomitant high PCSK9 and LPS (highest tertile for both) had and increased risk of CVEs as compared to those with low levels (lowest tertile for both) with 48 and 29 CVEs in each group respectively (Log-Rank test, p=0.022) Conclusion This study demonstrated for the first time in vivo that circulating levels of PCSK9 are associated with high LPS concentration and NADPH oxidase activation. Concomitant increase of PCSK9 and LPS increased the risk of CVEs.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterised by progressive changes of the lung architecture causing cough and dyspnoea and ultimately leading to lung failure and death. Today, for the first time, two drugs that may reduce the inexorable progression of the disease are available, suggesting that treatment with specific drugs for IPF should be started as soon as diagnosis is made. This applies to any disease and particularly to IPF, which is marked by a 5-year survival comparable or even worse than many cancers. However, despite common sense and even worse, in spite of scientific data coming from clinical trials, post hoc analysis, long-term safety studies and real-life experiences, the question of when to start and when to stop treatment with antifibrotics is still debated. In IPF, particularly when the disease is diagnosed at an early stage, “wait and watch” behaviour is not rare to observe. This is largely due to the lack of awareness of both patients and clinicians regarding the progression of the disease and its prognosis. Another important issue is when treatment should be stopped. In general, there are two main reasons to stop a therapy: unbearable side-effects and/or lack of efficacy. According to current (although preliminary) evidence, antifibrotic drugs should not be discontinued except for safety issues.

Abstract Currently, detailed structural characterization of low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) products is an analytical subject of great interest. In this work, we carried out a comprehensive structural analysis of LMWHs and applied a modified pharmacopeial method, as well as methods developed by other researchers, to the analysis of novel biosimilar LMWH products; and, for the first time, compared the qualitative and quantitative composition of commercially available drugs (enoxaparin, nadroparin, and dalteparin). For this purpose, we used strong anion-exchange (SAX) chromatography with spectrophotometric detection because this method is more helpful, easier, and faster than other separation techniques for the detailed disaccharide analysis of new LMWH drugs. In addition, we subjected the obtained results to statistical analysis (factor analysis, t-test, and Newman–Keuls post hoc test).

The aims of this investigation were to describe the physical output of hockey relative to possession status, and to identify differences in physical output during each possession category with respect of match result. Ten international matches were analysed utilizing Sportscode to identify in and not in possession instances. 24 players (age 26 ± 4) wore a 10 Hz GPS device to track physical output. Linear Mixed Models and post hoc pairwise comparisons were utilised to compare the physical output in each possession category within each position and relative to match result. Significant main effects were found for possession status on several physical output metrics (p ≤ 0.05). For all positions except forwards, not in possession instances were more physically demanding than in possession instances for metrics such as relative total distance, explosive distance, and high-speed running (>5.5 m.s−1). No significant difference was identified between possession category physical output aligned with match result (p > 0.05). This study shows for the first time that not in possession instances were more physically demanding than in possession instances for defenders, outside backs and midfielders. For not in possession instances, relative total distance and high-speed running was, on average, 13% and 41% higher compared to in possession instances. Furthermore, there was no statistical difference in physical output for any position during each possession category relative to the match result.

During the transitional period at the end of the 20th century, Croatian small composite shipbuilding (SCS) had merely 27 models. Still, at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, this innovative industry showed resilience and readiness to adapt to the new business conditions and created 237 basic models. The main goal of the research was the assessment of the innovative capacity of SCS in Croatia. The research was carried out via survey and interviews. It included 73 SCS organisations, based on the main hypothesis that there is a positive relationship between the innovative capacity and innovative appearances (innovative management, innovation culture, innovative policy, and innovative factors) as well as the performance of the organization. The testing was performed with the Pearson’s correlation coefficient, the ANOVA and the post hoc LSD test resulted in the confirmation of the main and the three ancillary hypotheses. For the first time in Croatia, a new model of assessment of innovative capacities and innovative phenomena is presented, aiming to raise awareness of the need to strengthen the innovative capacities as a basis for the development of SCS. ABSTRACT: Bemisia tabaci has been known in Brazil since 1923, in cotton, soybean, tomato and bean crops, and it leads to economic losses due to the transmission of different viruses. Studies focused on analyzing the incidence of this pest in forest environments remain scarce in the literature. Thus, the aims of the current study were to investigate the incidence of B. tabaci in four Atlantic forest fragments in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, as well as to record its hosts in these environments. An area of approximately one hectare was delimited for each Atlantic forest fragment based on images provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Plants presenting whiteflies were tagged throughout monthly inspections conducted in each forest fragment in order to be checked during the following visits. Collection criteria were adopted to assure sampling standardization in each fragment. The mean number of whiteflies was analyzed through the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric test, which was followed by Dunn’s post-hoc test, both at 5% significance level. The total of 216 collections were conducted and 1,126 B. tabaci fourth-instar nymphs were collected in four Atlantic forest fragments over 24 months. The following hosts were recorded for the first time: Caesalpinia pluviosa Benth, Tradescantia zebrina Linn., Impatiens walleriana Linn., Cupania sp. and Talisia esculenta Klotzsch & O. Berg. The dry period (winter) enabled the increase of B. tabaci populations in the herein investigated forest fragments.
