ABSTRACT In rubber friction studies, it is often observed that the kinetic friction coefficient μ depends on the nominal contact pressure p. We discuss several possible origins of the pressure dependency of μ: (1) saturation of the contact area (and friction force) due to high nominal squeezing pressure; (2) nonlinear viscoelasticity; (3) nonrandomness in the surface topography, in particular the influence of the skewness of the surface roughness profile; (4) adhesion; and (5) frictional heating. We show that in most cases the nonlinearity in the μ(p) relation is mainly due to process (5), frictional heating, that softens the rubber, increases the area of contact, and (in most cases) reduces the viscoelastic contribution to the friction. In fact, because the temperature distribution in the rubber at time t depends on the sliding history (i.e., on the earlier time t′ < t), the friction coefficient at time t will also depend on the sliding history, that is, it is, strictly speaking, a time integral operator. The energy dissipation in the contact regions between solids in sliding contact can result in high local temperatures that may strongly affect the area of real contact and the friction force (and the wear-rate). This is the case for rubber sliding on road surfaces at speeds above 1 mm/s. Previously, we derived equations that described the frictional heating for solids with arbitrary thermal properties. Here, the theory is applied to rubber friction on road surfaces. Numerical results are presented and compared to experimental data. We observe good agreement between the calculated and measured temperature increase.

The lateral motion of a tape moving axially over a cylindrical guide surface is investigated. The effects of lateral bending stiffness and friction force are studied and the attenuation of lateral tape motion as a function of the guide radius and friction coefficient is determined. Good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results is observed.

Abstract It is proposed that tire-pavement friction is controlled by thermal rather than by hysteresis and viscoelastic effects. A numerical model of heating effects in sliding is described in which the friction coefficient emerges as a dependent variable. The overall results of the model can be expressed in a closed form using Blok's flash temperature theory. This allows the factors controlling rubber friction to be recognized directly. The model can be applied in quantitative form to metal-polymer-ice contacts. Several examples of correlation are given. The difficulties of characterizing the contact conditions in tire-pavement friction reduce the model to qualitative form. Each of the governing parameters is examined in detail. The attainment of higher friction by small, discrete particles of aluminum filler is discussed.

An inverse solution scheme based on the conjugate gradient method with the minimization of the object function is presented for estimating the unknown wall heat flux of conjugated forced convection flows between two corotating disks from temperature measurements acquired within the flow field. The validity of the proposed approach is demonstrated via the estimation of three time- and space-dependent heat flux profiles. A good agreement is observed between the estimated results and the exact solution in every case. In general, the accuracy of the estimated results is found to improve as the temperature sensors are moved closer to the unknown boundary surface and the error in the measured temperature data is reduced.

In hydraulic components, nonlinearities are responsible for critical behaviors that make it difficult to realize a reliable mathematical model for numerical simulation. With particular reference to hydraulic spool valves, the viscous friction coefficient between the sliding and the fixed body is an unknown parameter that is normally set a posteriori in order to obtain a good agreement with the experimental data. In this paper, two different methodologies to characterize experimentally the viscous friction coefficient in a hydraulic component with spool are presented. The two approaches are significantly different and are both based on experimental tests; they were developed in two distinct laboratories in different periods of time and applied to the same flow compensator of a pump displacement control. One of the procedures was carried out at the Fluid Power Research Laboratory of the Politecnico di Torino, while the other approach was developed at the University of Parma. Both the proposed methods reached similar outcomes; moreover, neither method requires the installation of a spool displacement transducer that can significantly affect the results.

Abstract The effects of friction heat and friction coefficient on the abrasive wear response of Al-7.5Si–SiCp composite against low-cost hypereutectic (Al-17.5Si) alloy were investigated as functions of the abrasive size and applied load in both as-cast and after heat-treatment conditions. Experiments were performed on pin-on-disc apparatus at 38 –80 μm abrasive size, 5 – 20 N applied load, 100 –400 m abrading (sliding) distances and 1 m s–1 constant sliding speed. The frictional heating of as-cast and heat-treated composite was superior compared to the matrix alloy and hypereutectic alloy, whereas the trend reversed for the friction coefficient. The frictional heating and friction coefficient of the materials increased with the abrasive size and applied load in both as-cast and after heat-treatment. The worn surface and wear debris particles were examined by using field emission scanning electron microscopy to understand the wear mechanism.

The effect of the shape/size and distribution of microgeometries of textures on improving the tribo-performance of crankpin bearing is proposed. Based on a combined model of the slider-crank mechanism dynamic and hydrodynamic lubrication, the distribution density, area density, and shape of spherical textures, square-cylindrical textures, wedge-shaped textures, and a hybrid between spherical texture and square-cylindrical texture on the crankpin bearing's tribo-performance are investigated under different operating conditions of the engine. The tribological characteristic of the crankpin bearing is then evaluated via the indexes of the oil film pressure p, asperity contact force, friction force, and friction coefficient of the crankpin bearing. The research results show that the distribution density with n = 12 and m = 6, and area density with α = 30% of various microtextures have an obvious effect on ameliorating the crankpin bearings tribo-performance. Concurrently, at the mixed lubrication region, the shape of the square-cylindrical texture on improving the tribo-performance is better than the other shapes of the spherical texture, wedge-shaped texture, and spherical and square-cylindrical texture. Particularly, all the average values of the asperity contact force, friction force, and friction coefficient with a square-cylindrical texture are significantly reduced by 14.6%, 19.5%, and 34.5%, respectively, in comparison without microtextures. Therefore, the microtextures of the spherical texture applied on the bearing surface can contribute to enhance the durability and decrease the friction power loss of the engine.

Purpose Fabric-object friction force is a fundamental factor in cloth simulation. A large number of parameters influence the frictional properties of fabrics such as fabric structure, yarn structure, and inherent properties of component fibers. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel technique for modeling fabric-object friction force in knitted fabric simulation based on the mass spring model. Design/methodology/approach In this technique, unlike other studies, distribution of friction coefficient over the fabric surface is not uniform and depends on the fabric structure. The main reason for considering non-uniform distribution is that in various segments of fabric, contact percent of fabric-object is different. Findings The proposed technique and common methods based on friction coefficient uniform distribution are used to simulate the frictional behavior of knitted fabrics. The results show that simulation error values for proposed technique and common methods are 2.7 and 9.4 percent as compared with the experimental result, respectively. Originality/value In the existing methods of the friction force modeling, the friction coefficient of fabric is assumed uniform. But this assumption is not correct because fabric does not have an isotropic structure. Thus in this study, the friction coefficient distribution is considered based on fabric structure to achieve more of realistic simulations.

In order to enhance grinding efficiency of the magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) method, we usually use the sinter method or the cementation method to mix the magnetic particles and abrasive particles together. However, the cost is high, and the variety is incomplete. Therefore, with the ferromagnetism to iron particles, the alumina particles and the lipin three kind of material simple mixture participate in the magnetic abrasive finishing which directly polishes, already obtained the good effect through the experiment. This paper analyses and explains the characteristic of the friction coefficient and the friction force on magnetic abrasive finishing according as account and experiment data.

AbstractWe present the design and first results from two experiments using a wireless subglacial sensor system (WiSe) that is able to transmit data through 2500 m thick ice. Energy consumption of the probes is minimized, enabling the transmission of data for at least 10 years. In July 2010 the first prototype of the system was used to measure subglacial pressure at the base and a temperature profile consisting of 23 probes in two 600 m deep holes at Russell Glacier, a land-terminating part of the West Greenland ice sheet near Kangerlussuaq. The time series of subglacial pressure show very good agreement between data from the WiSe system and the wired reference system. The wireless-measured temperature data were validated by comparison with the theoretical decrease of melting point with water pressure inside the water-filled hole directly after installation. To test the depth range of the WiSe system a second experiment using three different probe types and two different surface antennas was performed inside the 2537 m deep hole at NEEM. It is demonstrated that, with the proper combination of transmission power and surface antenna type, the WiSe system transmits data through 2500 m thick ice.

Good understanding of friction in tire-road interaction is of critical importance for vehicle dynamic control systems. Most of the friction models proposed to describe the friction coefficient between tire-treads and road surfaces have been developed based on empirical or semi-empirical relations that are not able to include many effective parameters involved in the tire-road interactions. Therefore, these models are just useful in limited conditions similar to the experiments, and do not accurately represent tire-road traction in numerical tire models. However, in last two decades, a few theoretical models have been developed to calculate the tire-road friction coefficient theoretically by considering both viscoelastic behavior of tire tread compounds and multi-scale interactions between tire treads and rough road surfaces. In this article, a novel physics-based model proposed by Persson has been investigated and used to develop computer algorithms for calculation of sliding friction coefficient between a tire tread compound and a rough substrate. The viscoelastic behavior of tread compound and the surface profile of rough counter surface are the inputs of this physics-based theoretical model. The numerical results of the model have been compared with the experimental results obtained from a dynamic friction tester designed and built in the Center for Tire Research (CenTire). Good agreement between numerical results of theoretical model and experimental results has been found at intermediate range of slip velocities considering the effect of adhesion and shearing in the real contact area in addition to hysteresis friction due to internal energy dissipation in the tire tread compound.
