The germicidal efficacy of four common disinfectants used for different purposes was tested against two common pathogens namely Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . The disinfectants (Dettol, Jik, Izal and Purit) were diluted with sterile distilled water to achieve different concentrations (100%, 50%, 25%, 12.5% and 6.25%) and they were tested on the two organisms using Agar well diffusion method. The plates were allowed to incubate for 24 hours at 37°C.The germicidal efficiency of the disinfectants was evaluated by measuring the zone of inhibition of each disinfectant based on their varying concentrations. Dettol was observed to have the highest inhibition at 100% concentration and was more germicidal on E. coli than S. aureus with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 1:16 dilution against the two test organisms. This was closely followed by Jik which also showed more inhibitory activity against E. coli at the initial concentration recording the second highest inhibition rate compared to other disinfectants, but its efficacy decreased as the concentration dropped. Jik exhibited MIC value of 1:8 and 1:2 dilutions for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli respectively. Purit showed more inhibitory activity on S. aureus with 3.8mm zone of inhibition as against 1.3mm at 100% concentration, recording MIC value of 1:8 dilution on S. aureus and 1:16 dilution for E. coli . The disinfectant Izal was observed to be the lowest as it did not inhibit the growth of any of the organisms, indicating resistance of the organisms to the disinfectant at all concentrations. All the disinfectants apart from Izal inhibited the two test isolates. Only Dettol proved to be best among them. Therefore, Dettol is encouraged to be used in homes to prevent pathogenic infection.

Background: Management of ever growing multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria becomes one of the biggest threats to public health worldwide. The situation is worsening due to lack of new generation antimicrobials in the arsenal of the clinicians. Development of new alternatives to the conventional antimicrobial agents is the need of the hour to control the menace of AMR. Plants based products are attractive alternatives with proven efficacy but needs scientific investigation to explore their potential antimicrobial, antibiofilm and antiquorum sensing activities against major bacterial pathogens of human and animals. The present study was conducted to explore the antimicrobial, antibiofilm and antiquorum sensing activity of aqueous and methanol extracts of leaf, flower, fruit and stem of the Himalayan yellow raspberry (Rubus ellipticus) against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Methods: E. coli and S. aureus were isolated and identified from diarrhoeic pigs and poultry and mastitic milk of cattle of Mizoram, respectively. Leaf, flower, fruit and stem/bark of R. ellipticus were collected from Mizoram and extracted by methanol and aqueous solvents. The antimicrobial activity and MIC was determined by well diffusion method and 96 wells microtiter plate method, respectively. Antibiofilm activity of plant extracts was determined in 96 well tissue culture plate. Antiquorum sensing activity was determined by disc diffusion method. Result: Methanol leaf extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. aureus with 19 mm and 7 mm zone of inhibition at 200 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/mL, respectively. Methanol fruit extract also showed antimicrobial activity against S. aureus only. Highest and lowest activities were observed at 200 mg/mL and 25 mg/mL concentrations with 15 mm and 7 mm zone of inhibition, respectively. No antimicrobial activities by either of the extracts were observed against E. coli isolates. The MIC of R. ellipticus methanol leaf and fruit extracts against S. aureus was 0.203125 mg/mL and 0.8125 mg/mL, respectively. The methanol leaf (86.60%) and stem (85.60%) extracts of R. ellipticus showed significant antibiofilm activity against S. aureus isolates, whereas methanol fruit (89.20%) extracts exhibited antibiofilm activity against E. coli isolates at the concentration of 0.05 mg/mL. Significant antiquorum sensing (QS) activities was exhibited by the methanol leaf extract of R. ellipticus at 200 mg/mL concentration against E. coli. This is the first ever report on antibiofilm and anti QS activities of the R. ellipticus plant extracts against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria.

Resistance against synthetic antimicrobial agents is one of the major global public health challenges that compel scientists to search for alternatives including those of plants origin. Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are bacteria responsible for a variety of infections and diseases that causes significant morbidity and mortality in humans and animals. E. coli is widely distributed in nature and commonly found in lower gastro intestinal tracts of most warm-blooded animals associated with urinary tract infections and enterocolitis in humans and colibacillosis in poultry. This study was carried out to investigate antimicrobial activity of methanolic leaf extracts of Bidens pilosa against S. aureus and E. coli. Agar well diffusion method was used to assess antimicrobial activity of the leaf extracts at 20%, 50% and 70% concentrations respectively based on measured zone of inhibition. The leaf extracts of Bidens pilosa produced significant zone of inhibition indicating its antimicrobial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. The antimicrobial activity was demonstrated in all concentrations however, the highest zone of inhibition (18.5mm and 32mm) for E. coli and S. aureus respectively was at 70% concentration. The results shows that Bidens pilosa leaf extracts have antimicrobial activity against the tested bacteria and have the potential for further development including identification of active components that can be tested for treatment of E. coli and S. aureus associated conditions.

Starfish is one of the species of the asteroidean class, and is grouped into phylum echinoderms. Echinoderms consist of approximately 6000 species and all live in sea water. Starfish is one source bioactive compounds. Active compounds from starfish have been known to have activities antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and immunostimulatory, there are also blue starfish that are potential as antitumor and antibacterial agents. This study aims to obtain crude extracts from several types of starfish, and testing the antibacterial activity of crude starfish extracts against bacteria Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli and  Staphylococcus aureus. Test the antibacterial activity of crude starfish extracs Protoreaster nodosus, Achaster tipycus, dan Linckia laevigata against bacteria E. coli, S. aureus, dan S. agalactiae use the agar diffusion method by means of a well.  L. l extract  can inhibit bacteria e. coli at an extract concentration of 1000 mg/ml with a diameter of inhibitory zone 11.0 mm, whereas at a concentration of 750 mg/ml the test bacteria can still grow on the bacteria S. agalactiae and S. aureus can still grow even though the extract has be given  L. l Keywords: Potential Starfish, Antibacterial Activity, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae Bintang laut merupakan salah satu spesies dari kelas Asteroidea, dan dikelompokkan kedalam filum Echinodermata. Filum Echinodermata  terdiri atas kurang lebih 6000 spesies dan semuanya hidup di air laut. Bintang laut  merupakan salah satu sumber penghasil senyawa bioaktif. Senyawa aktif dari bintang laut telah diketahui memiliki aktivitas antioksidan, antibakteri, antiinflamasi, antifungi dan imunostimulator, ada juga bintang laut biru yang potensial sebagai antitumor dan agen antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan ekstrak kasar dari beberapa jenis bintang laut, dan menguji aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak kasar bintang laut terhadap bakteri Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli dan  Staphylococcus aureus. Uji aktivitas antibakteri dari ekstrak kasar bintang laut Protoreaster nodosus, Achaster tipycus, dan Linckia laevigata terhadap bakteri E. coli, S. aureus, dan S. agalactiae mengggunakan metode difusi agar dengan cara sumur. Ekstrak L. l mampu menghambat bakteri E.coli pada konsentrasi ekstrak 1.000 mg/ml dengan diameter zona hambat 11.0 mm, sedangkan pada konsentrasi 750 mg/ml bakteri uji masih bisa bertumbuh pada bakteri S. agalactiae dan S. aureus masih dapat bertumbuh walaupun telah diberikan ekstrak L. l.Kata Kunci : Potensi Bintang Laut, Aktivitas Antibakteri, Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli and  Staphylococcus aureus

Isolation of lactic acid bacteria from fermented fish products, peda, jambal roti and bekasam were carried out. Antibacterial activity of lactic acid bacteria was tested using well diffusion method against Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Twelve isolates of lactic acid bacteria had been isolated. Results showed that isolate A2 from peda was able to inhibit the growth of the 4 testing bacteria with inhibition zones of 6.7 mm for E. coli; 7.3 mm for P. aeruginosa; 8.3 mm for S. aureus and 10.0 mm for B. cereus. Isolate B5 from jambal roti had inhibition zones 11.6 mm for E. coli; 6.0 mm for P. aeruginosa ; 7.3 mm for S. aureus and 13.3 mm for B. cereus ; while isolate C6 from bekasam had inhibitor zones 7.7 mm for E. coli; 6.0 for P. aeruginosa; 8.0 mm for S. aureus and 9.3 mm for B. cereus.

Scent (Ocimum gratissimum) leaves are known for their medicinal values for a long. The study was carried out on phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity of scent leaf extracts on E. coli and S. aureus. Antibacterial assay of the plant extracts was carried out on the test isolates, by inoculation on the surface of freshly gelled sterile nutrient agar plates by streaking using sterilized swab stick and the potent extracts was determined according to the macro broth dilution technique. Phytochemical screening of O. gratissimum leaves revealed the presence of steroids, saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and tannins in all the extracts. There was decreased in antibacterial activity with decreased in concentration of the extract as the concentration of the extract decreases from 200 – 25 mg/ml, the zones of inhibition also decreased from 20 to 11 mm (ethanol extract) and 17 – 10 mm (aqueous extract) for S. aureus; 19 – 10 mm (ethanol extract) and 15 – 8 mm (aqueous extract) for E. coli. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of O. gratissimum extracts against the selected clinical isolates revealed no growth (clear) in all the test organisms at the concentration of 200 mg/ml. Also, the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) showed no growth of bacterial colonies at the concentration of 200 mg/ml. It was observed from the study that ethanol and aqueous extracts exhibited high inhibitory activities on Escherichia coli a representative of enteric coliforms and Gram negative bacteria and Staphylococcus aureus a representative of Gram positive bacteria. Ethanolic extract had higher inhibition compared to the aqueous extract. This can be deduced to the ability of ethanol to extract more of the essential oils and secondary plant metabolites which are believed to exert antibacterial activity on the test organisms.

The study was carried out to determine the antibacterial activities and toxicological evaluation of Anogeissusleiocarpus and Psidiumguajava on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinical samples. The plants leaves were extracted using Hexane, Methanol, Ethanol and Water. Various concentrations (50, 25, 12.5 and 6.25mg/ml) of the crude extract of the plants were prepared and their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli was determined using Agar well (Diffusion) method. Toxicity of the plants was evaluated, acute toxicity test, kidney and liver function tests. The result revealed that at 50mg/ml concentration, the leaf extract of Psidiumguajava was active against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli exhibiting the highest zones of inhibition of 19mm and 9mm respectively. Whereas The leaf extract of Anogeissusleiocarpus only inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus recording highest zone of inhibition of 15mm at a concentration of 50mg/ml. The plant extracts were found to be non-toxic as the LD50  was above 5000mg/kg and the biochemical parameters evaluated for both liver and kidney function tests revealed values that are within normal range. Hence the study established that consumption of the leaves of P.guajava for medicinal purpose can be said to be innocuous, as such the plant could be regarded as a potential candidate in the search of potent and harmless plants of therapeutic value.

Zanthoxylum armatum is a medicinal plant found in the Himalayan range. The present study was carried out to unravel the antimicrobial activities of Z. armatum oleoresin against bacteria isolated from raw pork and chicken meat sold in Dharan submetropolitan city. Five bacterial species Salmonella enterica var Typhi, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated. The antimicrobial activity of oleoresin extracted from Z. armatum was tested by agar well diffusion method and MICs were compared with standard antibiotics against isolated bacteria. The MIC values of oleoresin were ranged from 25-75 μl/mL. Zone of inhibition for oleoresin extracted with acetone was 10 mm (25 μl/mL) against Shigella dysenteriae and Staphylococcus aureus, and 9.5mm (25 μl/mL) against Escherichia coli respectively. Zone of inhibition of oleoresin extracted with chloroform was 12 mm (25 μl/mL) and 11 mm (25 μl/mL) against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus respectively, that of oleoresin extracted with cyclohexane was 10mm(25 μl/mL and 50 μl/mL) against all the isolates, except Bacillus cereus. Zone of inhibition of oleoresin extracted with methanol was 10mm (25 μl/mL) and 9.5 cm (25 μl/mL) against Shigella dysenteriae and Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli respectively. Zone of inhibition of oleoresin extracted with petroleum ether was 10 mm (25 μl/mL and (50 μl/mL) against Escherichia coli and all the isolates except Escherichia coli. Increasing oleoresin concentrations showed greater antimicrobial effect on the isolates. Bacillus cereus was most affected; comparatively, Salmonella enterica var Typhi was least affected by all the antibiotics.

AbstrakSabun cair cuci tangan terbukti dapat menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri Escherichia coli dan Staphylococcus aureus. Sebagian besar restoran waralaba di Kota Padang menyediakan sabun cair cuci tangan yang telah diencerkan. Proses pengenceran mengubah kemampuan sabun dalam menghambat pertumbuhan bakteri. Penelitian bertujuan untuk menguji daya hambat sabun cair cuci tangan pada restoran waralaba di Kota Padang terhadap pertumbuhan E. coli dan S. aureus. Sampel diambil dari empat restoran waralaba dan diuji dengan metode difusi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keempat sabun dapat menghambat pertumbuhan S. aureus namun hanya sebagian yang memiliki daya hambat terhadap E. coli. Median daya hambat pertumbuhan E. coli dan S. aureus pada setiap periode yaitu 0, 7.4, 7.3 dan 0, 26.1, 23.3. Nilai maksimum daya hambat pertumbuhan E.coli dalam tiga periode yaitu 19.5, 35.4, 27.1 dan 20.7, 40.2, 36.6 untukS. aureus. Daya hambat minimum terhadap kedua bakteri adalah 0.00. Hal tersebut dapat dipengaruhi komposisi dan konsentrasi antiseptik, antibakteri, pH sabun, pengenceran dan struktur dinding sel bakteri. Disimpulkan bahwa sabun cair cuci tangan yang diuji memiliki kemampuan lebih besar dalam menghambat pertumbuhan S.aureus daripada E.coli.Kata kunci: sabun cair cuci tangan, restoran, pengenceran, uji daya hambat, pertumbuhan bakteriAbstractLiquid hand soaps proved to inhibit Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial growth. In Padang, most of Restaurants provide diluted liquid hand soaps. Research found dilution changed soap ability to inhibit bacterial growth. The purpose of this study was to examine the ability of Padang City Restaurants’ liquid hand soaps to inhibit E. coli and S. aureus bacterial growth. The samples were taken from four restaurants and examined by using diffusion method. The results showed all of them could inhibit S. aureus but only a half inhibited Escherichia coli bacterial growth. Median for E. coli and S. aureus bacterial inhibition growth for each period were 0, 7.4, 7.3 and 0, 26.1, 23.3. Maximum inhibition value for E. coli growth in the first, second, and third periods were 19.5, 35.4, 27.1 and 20.7, 40.2, and 36.6 for S. aureus. In addition, minimum inhibition in both bacteria were 0.00. It could be influenced by soap antiseptic and antibacterial composition and concentration, pH, dilution, and structure of bacterial cell wall. In conclusion, the liquid hand soaps has greater ability to inhibit S. aureus than E. coli.Keywords: liquid hand soaps, restaurant, dilution, inhibitory test, bacterial growth

Macroalgae is a commodity that is used as food, medicine, fertilizer and other materials in industries. Macroalgae in the medical world have the potential to be anticancer, antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial. One type of macroalgae that has the potential as an antibacterial source is Sargassum polycystum. This study aims to analyze the ability of the methanol extract of S. polycystum to inhibit the growth of bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and analyze the potential compounds contained in the methanol extract of S. polycystum. This research is an experimental study using a completely randomized design. Extraction method by maceration. The test concentrations used were 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, positive and negative control. While the test method uses a good diffusion method. Data were analyzed using description and SPSS application. The results showed that the methanol extract of S. polycystum had better inhibition against S. aureus growth than E. coli. The methanol extract concentration of S. polycystum, which had the best inhibition against S. aureus and E. coli was 80%. Metabolites content on S. polycystum extract is Tetradecanoic Acid, Loliolide; Hexadecanoid Acid, Methyl Ester, 9-Hexadecanoid Acid, Hexadecenoic Acid, 8-Octadecanoic, Methyl Ester, 5,8,11,14-Eicosatetraenoic Acid and Ethyl Ester.

Introduction: In this project, the growth and volatile metabolites profiles of Escherichia coli (E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus were monitored under the influence of silver base chemical, nanoparticle and ultra-highly diluted compounds. Materials & Methods: The treatments were done for 12000 life cycles using silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as well as ultra-highly diluted Argentum nitricum (Arg-n). Volatile organic metabolites analysis was performed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results indicated that AgNPs treatment made the bacteria resistant and adapted to growth in the nanoparticle condition. The use of ultra-highly diluted Arg-n initially increased growth but it decreased later. Also, with the continuous usage of these materials, no more bacterial growth was observed. Results: The most important compounds produced by E. coli are Acetophenone, Octyl acetate, Styrene, 1,8-cineole, 4-t-butyl-2-(1-methyl-2-nitroethyl)cyclohexane, hexadecane and 2-Undecanol. The main compounds derived from S. aureus are Acetophenone,1,8-cineole, Benzaldehyde, 2-Hexan-1-ol, Tridecanol, Dimethyl Octenal and tetradecane. Acetophenone and 1,8-cineole were common and produced by both organisms. Conclusion: Based on the origin of the produced volatiles, main volatiles percentage of untreated sample is hydrocarbon (>50%), while bacteria treatments convert the ratio in to aldehydes, ketones and alcohols in the case of AgNPs, (>80%) and aldehydes, ketones and terpenes in the case of Arg-n (>70%).
