At present, the use of power hydraulic cylinders is an integral part of most industrial equipment. They provide translational and horizontal movements, replacement of goods, fixation, etc. These devices are necessary elements of the equipment where application of the corresponding level of effort is applied. Often hydraulic cylinders are created specialized to perform certain types of work. It should be noted that part of the elements of the power cylinder in the manufacture is combined with welding. Such integral connections provide rigidity of installation, tightness of a design, fatigue strength at multicycle loadings. Difficult operating conditions, significant workloads, the presence of various external factors often leads to the destruction of individual elements of the cylinder. At the same time, the cost of repairing equipment that involves replacement with new power devices is quite high. This causes the implementation of repair and restoration work carried out at specialized enterprises. However, in the case of repairs, there are often a number of problems that require prompt resolution in the production environment. These should include the provision of basic materials with similar physical and chemical properties, the establishment of welding modes, the selection of the necessary welding materials, the use of appropriate techniques for conducting the arc process, etc. Therefore the repaired welded design of the case of the power hydraulic cylinder needs additional studying for weldability of separate elements among themselves, formation of a zone of thermodeformation influence. In general, the repaired hydraulic cylinder should meet the installation operating requirements depending on the purpose. The design of the considered hydraulic cylinder of the press installation is rather technological from the point of view of maintenance of automation of welding process. It contains long welds of a simple ring configuration. At the same time, the significant linear dimensions and the presence of a cylindrical surface cause some complexity in the implementation of processes. The construction material of the power hydraulic cylinder is low-carbon low-alloy steels. The analysis of technological weldability indicates a tendency to crack due to the thermal cycle of welding. The simulation of welds of the power hydraulic cylinder is performed in the work. The number of rollers was taken into account when obtaining butt welds. A comparative analysis of different electrode materials with different doping systems is done. The most applicable welding materials by chemical composition and properties of the weld metal are determined. According to the literature data and the results of comparative analysis, the optimal range of cooling rate of the main material of the hydraulic cylinder was established. The properties and structure of the zone of thermal influence of the butt welds of the power hydraulic cylinder have been studied. The magnitude of deformations and stresses caused by the thermal cycle of welding of the shell structure of the hydraulic cylinder liner is investigated. The admissible parameters of the zone of plastic deformations during butt welding are determined.

To enable simulation of tiny hydraulic systems, including predicting system efficiency, it is necessary to determine the effect of the hydraulic cylinder piston seal. For tiny cylinders whose bore is less than 10 mm, O-ring seals are convenient. Simplified models for the O-ring were used to describe piston leakage and friction and based on the models, the force and volumetric efficiencies for tiny cylinders were predicted for a range of steady state operating conditions. To validate the models, a test stand was constructed to collect experimental data for 4, 6 and 9 mm bore cylinders, which were in the form of a vertical ram with a single O-ring seal. The ram was fully extended and put under load. A needle valve was then cracked to cause the ram to descend at different speeds. Pressure, load and velocity were recorded and the data used to calculate cylinder efficiencies, which were then compared to model predictions. The model and the experiment showed essentially zero leakage. The experimental force efficiency had good agreement with the model over a range of operating conditions. The study showed that simple O-ring models for tiny hydraulic cylinders suffice for building system level simulation models.

The article deals with the important problem of increasing the operating life of roll-balance system plunger hydraulic cylinders and describes the solution to this problem. The durability of plunger hydraulic cylinders determines not only the overall reliability of a hydraulic system, but also the technical and economic efficiency of the whole wide-strip hot rolling mill. Hydraulic cylinder durability depends primarily on the wear resistance of sealing units. Therefore in order to provide an effective approach to increasing the hydraulic cylinder life we have developed an analytical method for determining wear resistance of sealing units (i.e. determining a class or category) and calculating their expected operating life. The method is based on the solution of the fundamental equation of energy and mechanical theory of stationary units wear-fatigue as well as the theoretical provisions describing the strain pattern, initial and limiting values pertaining to plunger cylinders sealing units operating conditions. We have performed a computer experiment to study the behavior of various sealing materials and plungers with different antifriction coatings. As the result of the experiment we have established a number of ways to improve wear resistance of sealing units and durability of hydraulic cylinders by utilizing more durable elastomers and application of double-layer metal-polymer coatings. The most reliable design options of sealing units have been pilot tested and put into operation.

Temper embrittlement is a common damage mechanism of pressure vessels in the chemical and petrochemical industry serviced in high temperature, which results in the reduction of roughness due to metallurgical change in some low alloy steels. Pressure vessels that are temper embrittled may be susceptible to brittle fracture under certain operating conditions which cause high stress by thermal gradients, e.g., during start-up and shutdown. 2.25Cr1-Mo steel is widely used to make hydrogenation reactor due to its superior combination of high mechanical strength, good weldability, excellent high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) and oxidation-resistance. However, 2.25Cr-1Mo steel is particularly susceptible to temper embrittlement. In this paper, the effect of carbide on temper embrittlement of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel was investigated. Mechanical properties and the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel were measured by tensile test and impact test. The tests were performed at two positions (base metal and weld metal) and three states (original, step cooling treated and in-service for a hundred thousand hours). The content and distribution of carbides were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The content of Cr and Mo elements in carbide was measured by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS). The results showed that the embrittlement could increase the strength and reduce the plasticity. Higher carbide contents appear to be responsible for the higher DBTT. The in-service 2.25Cr-1Mo steel showed the highest DBTT and carbide content, followed by step cooling treated 2.25Cr-1Mo steel, while the as-received 2.25Cr-1Mo steel has the minimum DBTT and carbide content. At the same time, the Cr and Mo contents in carbide increased with the increasing of DBTT. It is well known that the specimen analyzed by SEM is very small in size, sampling SEM specimen is convenient and nondestructive to pressure vessel. Therefore, the relationship between DBTT and the content of carbide offers a feasible nondestructive method for quantitative measuring the temper embrittlement of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel pressure vessel.

This paper examines the changes and continuities in TV representations of Chinese Communist Party’s revolutionary history and interprets them within the broader context of China’s political, economic and cultural transformations since the 1990s. Drawing on a comparative analysis of three state-sponsored TV dramas produced between the late 1990s and mid-2010s, it traces how the state-sanctioned revolutionary narratives have changed over time in response to the Party’s propaganda imperatives on the one hand, and to the market-oriented production environment on the other. The paper argues that while recent TV productions in the new century have made increasing concessions to audience taste by adopting visually stimulating depictions and introducing fictional characters as points of identification for the audience, the revolutionary narratives were still aligned with the Party’s propaganda agenda at different times. This shows the ongoing competition between ideological and commercial interests in Chinese TV production during the era of market reforms.

The water in a swimming pool on the top deck of a large passenger ship can be excited to a resonant motion, even in a moderate sea state. The motion of the water in the pool is mainly caused by longitudinal acceleration, resulting from the ship's pitch and surge motions. At resonance, there can be high waves in the pool and splashing of water. In this study the behavior of the Solarium Pool of the Freedom of the Seas was examined in various sea states and operating conditions. The motions of the pool were calculated on the basis of a linear seakeeping method, and the behavior of the water in the pool was studied with experimental model tests. A large-scale model of the pool was constructed and fitted to a purpose-built test bench that could be axially moved by a computer-controlled hydraulic cylinder. Water elevation in the pool was measured, and all tests were video recorded. Different modifications of the pool were tested to improve the behavior of the pool. A strong correlation between the longitudinal motion and the behavior of the water in the pool was found.

A three-dimensional (3D) seismic isolation system for FBR building is under development. The proposed vertical isolation system consists form hydraulic cylinders with water-based liquid and accumulators to support large vertical static load and to realize low natural frequency in the vertical direction. For horizontal isolation, laminated rubber isolator or sliding type isolator will be combined. Because the major part of the feasibility of this isolation system depends on the sealing function and durability of the hydraulic cylinder, a series of feasibility tests of the hydraulic cylinder have been conducted to verify the reliability against seismic load and seismic motion. This paper describes the specification of the seismic isolations system, seismic response characteristics and the results of the feasibility tests of the seal. This study was performed as part of a government sponsored R&D project on 3D seismic isolation.
