The Population of White-Bellied Planthoppers and their Natural Enemies: the New Pest of Corn in Lampung. The white-bellied planthoppers (Stenocranus pasificus), hereinafter referred to as WBP, as new exotic pests in Lampung have the poten-tial to reduce corn production and threaten national food sovereignty. Therefore, population of the pest needs to be managed to prevent the outbreaks. However, there is still limited information on the bio-ecology of WBP. Thus, this research was conducted to: 1) study the population growth pattern of WBP on various corn cultivars and 2) document the natural enemies of WBP. This research was carried out from May to December 2017with a survey method on several corn fields in South Lampung and planting trial on an experimental field of Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Lampung planted with 3 corn cultivars, i.e. Madura, P-27 and NK which were arranged in randomized complete block design with three replications. The results of the research showed: 1) there were two peaks of population density observed during plant growth. The peak of adult stage of macroptera population density occurred at 17 and 53 days after planting (dap), the highest number of leaves with oviposition mass was observed at 24 and 65 dap, while the peak of population density of nymph stage and adult stage of brachiptera occurred at 31 and 75 dap; 2) Natural enemies of WBP included 9 orders, classified as specialist predators of mirid bugs (Cyrtorhynus) and rove beetles (Paederus), and generalist predators of spiders (Araneae) and lady beetles (Coccinellidae). The population of specialist predators was fluctuated depending on WBP population, while the population of generalist predators was varied.

Winged bean (Fabaceae) is a tropical crop that has high nutrient content, and almost all parts of the plant are edible. The research aimed to evaluate the growth and production of winged bean in an intercropping system with tomato. The study was conducted at the Cikabayan Experimental Field of Bogor Agricultural University, Bogor, Indonesia, in a randomized block design with three replications during the rainy season of December 2017 to June 2018. Winged beans were planted in high and low population densities and intercropped with three tomato genotypes, “Tora”, F70030081-12-16-3 and “Apel Belgia”. Monoculture winged bean was assigned as control. Tomatoes were planted between the rows of the winged beans in the intercropping treatment. The results showed that the growth of winged bean in monoculture and intercropping systems was not significantly different. The photosynthetic activity of winged bean at three to five weeks after planting remained high, indicating that the vegetative growth was optimal in both systems. Intercropping increased the winged bean number of pods per plant by 12.66-19.52% compared to monoculture, irrespective of population density. Therefore, winged bean could be considered as suitable to grow in intercropping systems.

AbstractThis research aims to know the physical characteristics and the palm oil production on a variety of land suitability. Randomized block design by survey method was used in this research that had been carried out in society’s enterprise. The research object was the palm oil crop cultivated in the lowlands (0-100 m above sea level), moderate land (100-500 m above sea level), and the highland (>500 m above sea level). The plant wich is taken as a sample is a plant which was 10 years old (already production). The villages in the survey, set in accordance with the height. The observed variables in this study i.e.; the circumference of the trunk, tall trunk, leaf stem length, color and thickness of the leaf, heavy of fresh fruit bunches, the age of starting production, production and productivity. Other observed data is temperature and soil acidity. To see the difference between production and productivity of palm oil on three ecology types of land, observed data were analyzed using analisys of varians that followed by Duncan test (α = 5%). The land suitability has significant on physical characteristics and palm oil production. Palm oil production in moderate land was significantly higher than those in both the high and lowland. Keywords; crop production, physical characteristics, land suitability, palm oil. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik fisik dan produksi kelapa sawit (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) pada berbagai agroekologi lahan. Percobaan dirancang menggunakan Rancangan Acak Kelompok (RAK), dilakukan di kebun rakyat dengan metode survey. Objek yang diteliti adalah tanaman kelapa Sawit yang dibudidayakan di dataran rendah (0-100 m dpl), dataran sedang (100-500 m dpl_, dan dataran tinggi (>500 m dpl). Tanaman yang diambil sebagai sampel adalah tanaman yang berumur 10 tahun (telah berproduksi). Desa-desa yang di survey, ditetapkan sesuai dengan ketinggian tempat. Peubah yang diamati dalam penelitian ini yaitu ; lingkar batang, tinggi batang, panjang pelepah, warna dan ketebalan daun, berat tandan buah segar, umur mulai berproduksi, produksi dan produktivitas, serta tindakan agronomi. Data lain yang diamati adalah suhu dan kemasaman tanah. Untuk melihat perbedaan produksi dan produktivitas kelapa sawit pada tiga jenis agroekologi lahan, data hasil pengamatan lapangan dianalisis menggunakan analisis ragam yang dilanjutkan dengan uji Duncan dengan α 5%. Agroekologi lahan berpengaruh nyata terhadap karakteristik fisik dan produksi kelapa sawit. Produksi tanaman kelapa sawit di daerah dataran sedang lebih tinggi dan berbeda nyata dengan produksi tanaman kelapa sawit daerah dataran tinggi dan daerah dataran rendah. Kata Kunci ; produksi tanaman, karakteristik fisik, kesesuaian lahan, kelapa sawit

DI AIR TERJUN TUNAN DESA TALAWAAN, MINAHASA UTARA DAN TAMANHUTANRAYAGUNUNG TUMPA, MANADOABSTRAKKepadatan populasi menunjukan besarnya populasi dalam satuan ruang.Umumnya dinyatakan sebagai jumlah individu atau biomasa persatuan luas atau volume.  Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis kepadatan populasi kupu-kupu  Troides helena. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survey berupa transek garis  Penelitian ini dilakukan di dua  tempat  di Air Terjun Tunan Desa Talawaan Minahasa Utara dan Taman Hutan Raya Gunung Tumpa Manado. penelitian ini hanya dilakukan pada hutan sekunder yang sebagian besar lahannya telah dijadikan lahan pertanian. Kepadatan populasi tertinggi di daerah Air Terjun Tunan Desa Talawaan Minahasa Utara  terdapat pada Transek 2 (8 ekor/km2). Kepadatan populasi terendah terdapat pada Transek 3 (3 ekor/km2).Pada daerah Taman Hutan Raya Gunung Tumpa Manado kepadatan populasi tertinggi terdapat pada Transek 2 (74 ekor/km2).Kepadatan populasi terendah terdapat Transek 3 (14 ekor/km2).Kata kunci :Kepadatan Populasi, Troides helena, Air Terjun Tunan, TAHURA Gunung Tumpa, Sulawesi Utara POPULATION DENSITY OFTroides helenaL. This study used a survey method in the form of the transect line.This research only in secondary forests  is done on most of its land was made of agricultural land. The highest population density in the area Waterfall North Minahasa Talawaan Village Tunan found on Transect 2 (8 tails/km2). The low population density found in Transect 3 (3 tail/km2). In the area Forest Park of Mount Tumpa, manado.  Highest population density is found in the Transect 2 (74 tail/km2). A three-year field trial was conducted between 2014 and 2017 in the Ellembelle and Jomoro districts of the Western region of Ghana where rubber production is common to determine the optimum population density of plantain when grown in combination with immature rubber tree crops. The trials were arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatments were sole rubber, sole plantain, and three intercrops of one row of plantain in between two rows of rubber, two rows of plantain in between two rows of rubber, and three rows of plantain in between two rows of rubber. The rubber clone used was GT1 while the variety of plantain used was false horn. The results showed that population density of plantain had significant effect on the growth of the associated rubber. Growing plantain at closer spacing of 1.5 m under the high-density plantain treatment significantly increased plantain yield compared to the other cropping systems. There was a significant positive relationship between population density of plantain and the rubber tree growth and development. The optimum population density of plantain when intercropped with rubber was 1,666/ha. The study showed intercropping was advantageous over sole cropping for both crops.

Maize hybrids have different levels of tolerance to the herbicide nicosulfuron, depending on the dose, the environment, the phenological stage of the plant and the timing of nitrogen fertilization, and phytotoxic effects can occur without proper management. There is also limited information on the selectivity of current genetically modified hybrids for other recommended herbicides, such as tembotrione. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides (tembotrione and nicosulfuron) and the timing of nitrogen fertilization on the yield of maize hybrids. The experimental design was a randomized block design, in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 4 replicates. The treatments consisted of four treatments [weeding; nicosulfuron + atrazine (20 and 32 + 1250 g ha-1 ai) and tembotrione + atrazine (75.6 + 1250 g ha-1 ai)] and two nitrogen fertilization times (0 and 7 days after application). Maize hybrids P30F53 Leptra, DKB 230PRO3 and KWS 9004PRO2 were assessed in two growing seasons (1st and 2nd harvest) during the 2016/2017 growing season. The percentages of weed control; phytotoxicity at 7, 14 and 21 days after application (DAA); plant height; number of rows per ear; and yield at harvest were evaluated. All herbicides were more effective in controlling weeds at the 1st harvest because of favourable climatic conditions. Nitrogen fertilization can be carried out on the same day as the application of the herbicides nicosulfuron and tembotrione with no reduction in yield for the hybrids P30F53 Leptra, DKB 230PRO3 and KWS 9004PRO2.

Biological Suppression of Moler Disease on Shallot  by Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma koningii, and Pseudomonas fluorescens P60. Research aiming for (1) knowing efectivity of biological suppression with T. harzianum, T. koningii, and P. fluorescens P60 and (2) studying growth and production of shallot caused by the suppression carried out at the shallot farm. Split-Split Plot Design arranged in Randomized Completely Block Design was used with three replicates. The research result showed that P. fluorescens P60 was the most effective antagonistic agent to suppress the disease either alone or in combination while T. harzianumi and T. koningii did not suppress effectively. Pseudomonas fluorescens P60 could suppress the disease up to 41.96%. The best method of P. fluorescens P60 application was spraying method for 10 mL with 107 cfu/mL population density, which was able to dicrease incubation period, disease intensity, and final pathogen population up to 62.46, 18.19, and 80.67%, respectively. Growth and production of the crop tended to increase resulted from biological suppression by P. fluorescens P60, but not by T. harzianum nor T. koningii.

AbstractBiological control plays an important role in many integrated pest management programmes, but can be disrupted by other control strategies, including chemical and cultural controls. In commercial cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton; Ericaceae) production, a spring flood can replace an insecticide application, providing an opportunity to study the compatibility of the flood (a cultural control) with biological control. We suspect that chemical controls will tend to reduce the number of natural enemies, while the flood, through removal of detritus and detritivores, may cause generalist predators to prey-switch to consume proportionally more pest individuals. We measured the abundance of herbivores (Lepidoptera), detritivores, Arachnida, and parasitoids (Hymenoptera) every week for six weeks in Wisconsin (United States of America) cranberry beds following either an insecticide spray or a cultural control flood. We found that detritivore populations rapidly declined in both flood and spray treatments; conversely, carnivore populations (spiders and parasitoids) were more abundant in the flooded beds than in sprayed beds. Populations of key cranberry pests were similar between flooded and sprayed beds. Our results showed that early-season flooding preserved more natural enemies than an insecticide application. This increase in natural enemy abundance after the flood may allow for greater continuity in herbivore suppression, potentially providing a basis for long-term cranberry pest management.
