Abstract: This paper addresses discursive processes that generated ‘jilboobs’ term. It tries to ground the notion of socially mediated publicness and its affordances by investigating the process of image making of Indonesian Muslim women. Using Foucauldian discourse analysis approach, the result shows three characteristics of Indonesia’s socially mediated publicness: (1) religiosity has a central role in the shift and contestation of private versus public sphere, (2) the visual turn of the social media has given specifi c augmentation for networked public affordances, and (3) feminine pious bodies are often marked by their concurrent presence and absence. Abstrak: Makalah ini membahas proses diskursif yang memunculkan istilah ‘jilboobs’. Gagasan socially mediated publicness atau kepublikan termediasi dan berbagai bentuk affordances diaplikasikan dengan meneliti proses pencitraan perempuan muslim berjilbab di Indonesia. Menggunakan analisa diskursus Foucauldian, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa terdapat tiga karakteristik dari kepublikan termediasi di Indonesia, yaitu: (1) religiusitas berperan penting dalam pergeseran dan kontestasi pemisahan ranah publik dengan ranah privat, (2) semakin pentingnya dimensi visual dalam media sosial memberikan penekanan spesifi k pada elemen affordances, dan (3) tubuh feminin saleh dalam kepublikan yang termediasi muncul bersamaan melalui keberadaan dan ketiadaan.

One of the themes that are often sought after by Muslim women on social media is the syar'i clothing. It aims to find clothes that are in accordance with the shari'ah of Religion. On the contrary, the production of syar'i clothing on social media is increasing. This study would like to look further at how media discourse attracts attention and constructs women's understandings of the syar'i clothing. This study use the discourse analysis approach by Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe – with stages: exploration, identification, classification and interpretation. The results of this study are (1) the syar'i clothing discourse on social media is one form of social phenomena in society that is in the form of the emergence of a movement from a particular group in the State of Indonesia (2) basically that discourse is hegemony to clothing not syar'i. (3) the discourses also show the existence of certain motives from the pro syar'i group, namely in the form of realizing and demanding equality and recognition as the cultures of Indonesian society which already existed and were known in Indonesian society.Salah satu tema yang sering diminati oleh wanita muslim di media sosial adalah Pakaian Syar’i. Hal ini bertujuan mencari pakaian yang sesuai dengan syari’at Agama. Sebaliknya, produksi Pakaian Syar’i di media sosial pun semakin meningkat. Kajian ini ingin melihat lebih jauh bagaimana wacana media menarik perhatian dan mengkonstruk pemahaman-pemahaman wanita tentang Pakaian Syar’i. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan analisis wacana Ernesto Laclau dan Chantal Mouffe – dengan Tahapan; eksplorasi, identifikasi, klasifikasi dan interpretasi. Hasil dari kajian ini adalah (1) wacana Pakaian Syar’i di media sosial adalah salah satu bentuk fenomena sosial di masyarakat yakni berupa munculnya sebuah gerakan dari kelompok tertentu di Negara Indonesia (2) pada dasarnya wacana-wacana tersebut merupakan bentuk hegemoni terhadap pakaian-pakaian yang dianggap tidak syar’i. (3) wacana-wacana itu juga menunjukkan adanya motif-motif tertentu dari kelompok pro syar’i yakni berupa mewujudkan dan menuntut kesetaraan dan pengakuan selayaknya budaya-budaya masyarakat Indonesia yang sudah lebih dulu ada dan dikenal di masyarakat Indonesia.

Abstract This research is linked with Twitter, as one of social media services on the Internet that are extremely popular in the world, including in Indonesia. This research is important because Twitter is effective in quickly and accurately delivering messages. In fact, everyone can act as a 'reporter' and form quick opinions through this social media. This research is aimed to investigate the emergence of the roots of hegemony based on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, identity, and transformation of national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. Moreover, the research is to discuss the social media's discourse practice that influences media workers in producing news, and to see how it implicates the research on the study of discourse analysis. By using the Fairclough theory, especially on text analysis that is linked with representation, relation, and identity, the researcher attempts to explore how the roots of hegemony emerge in the national issues that become trending topics on Twitter. The researcher also offers a new function to complete the approach of Fairclough in text analysis on social media: transformation – which is an attempt to see the change in roles of news participants and amateur readers as 'reporters' and participate in forming opinions. Abstrak Penelitian ini berhubungan dengan twitter, sebagai salah satu media sosial di internet yang sangat populer di dunia, termasuk di indonesia. Penelitian ini penting karena twitter efektif dalam menyampaikan pesan dengan cepat dan akurat. Faktanya, semua orang dapat bertindak sebagai "reporter" dan membuat opini yang cepat melalui sosial media tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki kemunculan dari akar hagemoni berdasarkan analisis teks yang berhubungan dengan representasi, hubungan, identitas, dan transformasi isu-isu nasional yang menjadi topik yang sedang tren di twitter. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga untuk mendiskusikan praktik wacana media sosial  yang mempengaruhi pekerja media dalam membuat berita, dan untuk melihat bagaimana hal tersebut melibatkan penelitian dalam studi analisis wacana. Dengan menggunakan teori Fairclough, khususnya pada analisis teks yang berhubungan dengan penafsiran, hubungan, identitas, peneliti berupaya untuk menyelidiki bagaimana akar hegemoni muncul yang menjadi topik tren di twitter. Peneliti juga menawarkan sebuah fungsi baru untuk melengkapi pendekatan Fairlclough dalam analisis teks pada sosial media: transformasi - yang merupakan usaha untuk melihat perubahan peran pembuat berita dan pembaca awam sebagai 'reporter' dan berpartisipasi dalam membentuk opini. PurposeThe purpose is to provide insight into the social media related information behaviours of Muslim women within Arab society, and to explore issues of societal constraint and control, and impact on behaviours.Design/methodology/approachThe study conducted semi-structured interviews with Muslim women resident within the capital city of a nation within the Arabian Peninsula.FindingsSocial media provides the study participants' with an important source of information and social connection, and medium for personal expression. However, use is constrained within sociocultural boundaries, and monitored by husbands and/or male relatives. Pseudonym accounts and carefully managed privacy settings are used to circumvent boundaries and pursue needs, but not without risk of social transgression. The authors provide evidence of systematic marginalisation, but also of resilience and agency to overcome. Self-protective acts of secrecy and deception are employed to not only cope with small world life, but to also circumvent boundaries and move between social and information worlds.Research limitations/implicationsFindings should not be considered representative of Muslim women as a whole as Muslim women are not a homogenous group, and Arabian Peninsula nations variously more conservative or liberal than others.Practical implicationsFindings contribute to the authors’ practical and conceptual understanding of digital literacy with implications for education programmes including social, moral and intellectual aspects.Originality/valueFindings contribute to conceptual and practical understanding of information poverty, evidencing structural inequalities as a major contributory factor, and that self-protective information behaviours, often considered reductive, can also be expansive in nature.

This paper studied the movement of Aksi Bela Islam (ABI) which was propagated by the GNPF MUI group to bring down Basuki Tjahaja Purnama from the governor position. This demonstration not only in Jakarta but also the various cities in Indonesia. The involvement of Muslims are influenced by social media. Social media has succeeded in becoming a public sphere for society. Today, society can take a truth from social media. Therefore,  social construction is not only formed from individuals or society but also social media. This research uses literature study with analytical descriptive writing method. This paper uses framing analysis approach and Islam populist. The results of this paper show that social media has an important role in the construction of public awareness. This social construction can be seen with the birth of Islam populist movement 212 which has a goal to reform the bureaucracy in government.Keyword: Social Contruction, Islam Populist, Aksi Bela Islam, Social Media, Post-Truth.

The article considers the relationship between the 2020 regional elections in Indonesia under the covid-19 pandemic, public space, and political activism in the social media. The covid-19 pandemic has changed the social, political and cultural fabric of the contemporary world. First, the covid-19 threatened the countrys healthcare system, then it affected other aspects of social life, including the political sphere. The pandemic has been exacerbated by the spread of misinformation about the covid-19, which is also known as the infodemic. Thus, the covid-19 pandemic influenced the choice of holding elections or delaying it until the situation is under control. The development of the social media encourages political activism in the political public sphere and makes it more diverse in the sphere of egalitarianism. The political public sphere becomes increasingly dynamic and critical to various policies. Indonesia did not postpone the 2020 regional elections under the covid-19 crisis. According to the health protocol, this decision had its pros and cons in the digital space. The authors show that political activists in the social media called for prioritizing health rather than the process of democratization through elections, while the government supporters insisted on having elections even in the covid-19 pandemic situation. Finally, the 2020 regional elections were held but were followed by various incidents. The question is whether the governments argument to hold elections under the covid-19 pandemic was reasonable or, on the contrary, contributed to the wider spread of the covid-19 in Indonesia. Deliberative democracy should consider civil participation as the main pillar of the political system, which is relevant for the new social reality as based on the new social media technologies.

In Pakistan, although women’s activism was initiated since the country came into existence, but a diverse activism was observed by the nation in the form of ‘Aurat March during 2018-2020. The current study examines the Western feminism, what it was initiated for and its accomplishments in the current time. By employing a discourse analysis approach to the ‘Aurat March event, this study highlights the women’s activism in Pakistan, ‘Aurat March and the antipathy faced by organizers and supporters from the public because of its strange slogans and ridiculous placards. It also observes the relationship between western feminism and ‘Aurat March activism from the perspective of the social, cultural, and religious transformation of society. The study finds the need to raise a constructive and logical voice for women’s rights with support of the public to eradicate social evils instead of focusing on insignificant matters. It has further recommended that there is a need to build a framework in which one may be able to differentiate women’s rights in the context of western feminism and the limitation of women’s emancipation in Islamic context.

<p>ABSTRACT<br />This study discusses the discourse contained in the Kimi Hime youtube upload which is quite controversial because it is considered too sensual. This research is a research with a critical paradigm which analyzes the Norman Fairclough critical discourse analysis and uses the content commodification theory proposed by Vincent Mosco. The results of this study indicate that the YouTube show made by Kimi Hime is basically a commodification of sensuality by producing the title and content of the show, including reproducing sensual words and sentences that can arouse male biological desires to attract many viewers and visitors from the social media channel Kimi Hime.<br />Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Commodification, Sensuality</p><p> </p><p>ABSTRAK<br />Penelitian ini membahas mengenai wacana yang terkandung dalam unggahan youtube Kimi Hime yang cukup kontroversial karena dianggap terlalu sensual. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dengan paradigma kritis yang melakukan analisis dengan menggunakan analisis wacana kritis Norman Fairclough dan menggunakan teori komodifikasi konten yang dikemukanan oleh Vincent Mosco. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tayangan youtube yang dibuat Kimi Hime pada dasarnya merupakan suatu komodifikasi terhadap sensualitas yang dilakukan dengan memproduksi judul dan isi tayangan, termasuk di dalamnya mereproduksi kata dan kalimat yang bersifat sensual serta bisa mengguah hasrat biologis lelaki demi menarik banyak penonton dan pengunjung dari kanal media sosial Kimi Hime.<br />Kata Kunci: Analisis Wacana Kritis, Komodifikasi, Sensualitas</p>

Ethiopia since 1991 G.C has been adopting democracy and federalism as constitutional frameworks of the state. The core objective to maintain the two political cultures is the presence of multiple cultural identities within the state and the actual need for an intersubjective discussion on the public sphere. And one of the major areas of public sphere is the social media. As per the Constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia citizens of Ethiopia have the democratic rights of Thoughts, Opinion and Expression (Art. 29), so in social media it is natural to expect that individuals talk on the different affairs of the state ‘freely’. Basically the social media is serving as an instrument in maintaining discursive talk among individuals. However, it has been also producing considerable social turmoil across the world. The same is what is encountering in Ethiopia today; on the one hand, social media as a communication platform allows people to communicate effectively with sharing alternative views, attitudes and forming democratic consensus on the social anomalies and responses, and on the other hand, the media is the sphere of communicative maladjustment where misunderstanding, extremism and miscommunication is producing. In the present Ethiopian context the basic source of communication and miscommunication in the social media is the ‘pluriversal identities’ of the cultural horizon. Taking this as a crucial object, this article will discuss the connection between democracy, federalism and social media in the current Ethiopia. On the top of this, the study aims at exploring the following issues: the social media sphere in Ethiopia, the modern and postmodern challenges of social media in Ethiopia and alternatives for the social media reconstruction.

The term “cancel culture” has significant implications for defining discourses of digital and social media activism. In this essay, I briefly interrogate the evolution of digital accountability praxis as performed by Black Twitter, a meta-network of culturally linked communities online. I trace the practice of the social media callout from its roots in Black vernacular tradition to its misappropriation in the digital age by social elites, arguing that the application of useful anger by minoritized people and groups has been effectively harnessed in social media spaces as a strategy for networked framing of extant social problems. This strategy is challenged, however, by the dominant culture’s ability to narrativize the process of being “canceled” as a moral panic with the potential to upset the concept of a limited public sphere.
