This study aims to investigate the needs of students in writing skills. In particular, this research attempts to explore the present situation, the target, and the learning needs for the writing course. Need analysis is conducted for deciding the goals and the objectives of the upcoming curriculum and for ensuring that the curriculum content ties the students’ needs. A descriptive method was employed in this study. A questionnaire was used for collecting the data which then analyzed and described qualitatively. The respondents of this research were 176 students of English Education Department students who are mostly in the second semester. The results show that; firstly, in the present situation analysis, most of the students admitted that they were in the intermediate level of English; specifically, most of them have fair proficiency in writing. Next, in the target situation analysis, writing skill is the secondary need of the students in which grammar is the most priority needed by the students to be improved. Next, the students’ purposes in learning English are to be a teacher/lecturer, translator, and tourism guide. Most of the students are more enjoyable for learning in the classroom that should be consisted of not more than 30 students. Thirdly, in the learning needs analysis, the students were interested to learn writing using discussion. For doing the writing task, the students require to have individual work. The learning media that is the most needed is PowerPoint presentation. In addition, the most important learning source that the students need is a hand-out and the topics of the material are about issues in Indonesia. Finally, the results of this research are expected to contribute to the curriculum development at the English Education Department of UIN SAIZU.

This study aimed at developing an appropriate electronic learning media named E-Writing to improve students’ writing skill of English Education Department. This media will be the solution of students’ difficulties in writing activities especially as a guidence for writing task and activities.  That is why this research is going to develop a media which based on the needs of analysis to make the learning process of writing skill  become effective. This research is developed based on the Design and Development (D&D) model. The data obtained from the experts’ evaluation result. All data are both analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using mean score and alpha Cronbach formula. The result of this study suggested that E-Writing can be such a beneficial media for students’ writing development.

This study aims to reveal students’ perception on the use of comic strips in creative writing at English Education Department, Universitas Negeri Manado. The study is a quantitative research and the descriptive method is applied. The questionnaire that consists of 14 items is used as an instrument to collect the data. The questionnaire employs Likert scale. Total random sampling is used to determine the sample. The sample is 42-seventh students English Education Department which consist of 27 students from class A and 15 students from class E. The students who have been chosen as the sample has already finished the class creative writing and has used comic strips as media. The collected data are quantitative and have analysed by percentage formula. The finding shows that most of the respondents have positive responses about the use of comic strips in creative writing. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the media comic strips are considered useful to the students. English lecturers are suggested to receive students’ responses towards the use of comic strips in creative teaching.

ABSTRACTThe current study revealed the communication needs of medical students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Three approaches of Need Analysis (NA) were combined in this study; Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Presentation Situation Analysis (PSA), and Pedagogical Need Analysis (PNA). The questionnaires were circulated to medical students. The findings discovered that communication skill was considered important in EMP course. The medical students realized the importance of doctors’ communication in order to enhance better performance in their professional settings. ESP teachers are supposed to give a model of communication; Students also expected that the materials should be authentic. The materials design should have clear and coherent objectives to help the students achieving the communication goals. Moreover, students want ESP teaching put them as close as possible to the workplace situation.  ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kebutuhan materi pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris  komunikasi pada mahasiswa kedokteran di Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.  Pendekatan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah gabungan antara Target Situation Analysis (TSA), Presentation Situation Analysis (PSA), dan Pedagogical Need Analysis (PNA). Dari data yang diperoleh dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa mahasiwa kedokteran merasa mata kuliah EMP (English for Medical Purposes) itu penting untuk menunjang karir dan profesi mereka. Maka dari itu para pengajar mata kuliah ESP (English for Specific Purposes) diharapkan bisa memberikan model-model materi pengajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk komunikasi yang otentik; yaitu materi yang tepat untuk mengasah ketrampilan mereka dalam komunikasi. <p>The study is intended to develop Writing III Course materials using graphic organizers for the fourth-semester students of English Education Study Program of IAIN Palangka Raya. The Research and Development (R &amp; D) design was employed in this study. It included the stages:  need analysis, description of the purpose, selection and development of material type, production of proto-material, production of pedagogical material, expert validation, field testing (trying-out), evaluation and revision (evaluation from try-out and the expert, and final product. The final product of this study was the instructional materials (six units for nine meetings) covering introduction to the essay (unit 1 for meetings 1-4), the illustration essay (unit 2 for meeting 5), the classification essay (unit 3 for meeting 6), the process essay (unit 4 for meeting 7), the comparison contrast essay (unit 5 for meeting 8), and the cause and effect (unit 6 for meeting 9). Each unit consisted of learning objective, topic, sub-topic, description, relevancy, and keywords. The materials serve for appropriate topics, clear models, stimulating learning, relevant activities, clear example, graphic organizers, and providing strategies.</p><em></em>

This research aims to develop a textbook for the Basic Reading subject by using multimodality and oriented to character education. This research is research and development, which refers to the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implementation, and Evaluation). Subjects of this research are students and lecturers who have taken part in the Basic Reading subject at English Education Department STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. Data collection techniques used are document analysis, questionnaire, interview, and expert judgments. The results of need analysis show that the textbook used in Basic Reading subject has not oriented to character education and used multimodality yet. The development of Basic Reading has been validated by education experts and practitioners (lecturers). Based on the validation of experts and practitioners, this textbook is included in the very well category and confirmed as the feasibility to use. The trial results in implementing the book show that the N-Gain calculation shows 0.43, which is categorized as moderate, which means the book improves students’ cognitive learning outcomes in the reading subject and also instills core ethical values in daily living. Thus, this textbook is feasible to be used in the learning process at Basic Reading Subject.

Students four grade semester English Education Department have difficult in writing. They have  limitation in English vocabulary building, students didn’t understand  systematically in writing. They usual use common words in writing English so that they weak in writing skill. Lecturer choose clustering technique to improve students’writing skill. The advantages this technique can mapp students’mind, an idea or theme with symbols and diagram after that they can improve become written or text. Furthermore all of the content in which they want to write based on the outline. This research aim to know improving students’writing skill  through clustering technique on students STKIP Kusuma Negara, Jakarta. It is qualitative research using classroom action research method. It was conducted two cycle. Each of cycle consist of four steps. There are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. This research was conducted with the subject twenty five students in fourth semester English Education STKIP Kusuma Negara Jakarta. Data were collected  through interview, observation and test. The result of this research is improving students’writing skill through Clustering Technique showed an increasing percentage and average score. Cycle I was  32 % students pass in writing skill or the average score is 73.28, in Cycle II was 88 % students pass in writing skill or the average score is 81.6. The students given positive responses, they were enthusiastic and motivated when they written in English by Clustering Technique. Based on the result, it  can be concluded Clustering Technique could improve the students’writing skill on STKIP Kusuma Negara.

This present study intended to develop the first draft syllabus for writing course in English Education major. Particularly in teaching writing as foreign language, syllabus became one of the key factors for teachers before and while delivering thelesson. The research was carried out by initial steps of research and development approach (R and D). The respondents were the students from writing classes, writing lecturers, and the stakeholders in one university in Jakarta. In collecting data, the instruments were the questionnaire and in-depth interview. After analyzing the data from need analysis descriptively, the researchers have modeled a developed layout of the syllabus for writing class. The syllabus is developed in a set of concepts and rationale, general and specific objectives or outcomes of the course as competences, teaching methods, materials and content, practices and activity, and evaluation.

Teaching English as a foreign language in higher education becomes more challenging from year to year. Based on the learner and learning needs, nowadays, English should be taught in relation to the other fields of the study. The phenomena require a certain &lsquo;scenario&rsquo; to support the students&rsquo; English mastery. In accordance to the condition, English Education Department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan has a program to help the students improving their English skills called Peer-Assisted Learning Program PALP. As an official program in the department, PALP is managed professionally by the boards. However, developing the appropriate materials for the program still becomes one big question to everyone dealing with the program, especially the boards. It is a really challenging work to develop such informative and practical materials for the students joining the program. Thus, in this paper, the writer will discuss several theories as the basis in developing the materials for PALP. It will cover the information about PALP, learner needs, learning needs, criteria of good materials, material development, and materials evaluation/assessment.

Present situation analysis is considered to be the umbrella that embraces students� lacks in language proficiencies. The aims of this study were to (1) find out current students� writing competence level; (2) identify students� entry behaviors and characteristics; (3) identify students� perception concerning with writing skill for academic purposes at non-English education study programs of STKIP Kusuma Negara Jakarta. The descriptive inquiry was used in identifying students� present situation. The respondents were non-English education study programs students of STKIP Kusuma Negara Jakarta in the academic year 2016-2017 and English lecturers. Non-English education study programs students of STKIP Kusuma Negara Jakarta had low-level writing competence for academic purposes, in the area of academic styles and genres based on their disciplines. Their previous experience in studying English was different with college requirement. They were not interested in studying writing for an academic purpose due to it was difficult and made them confusing. Most of them never practiced and learned it seriously but they realized the importance of having competence in writing for academic purposes, especially related with the learning process in the university level.Keywords: present situation analysis, writing for academic purposes, descriptive inquiry�

This study is to describe the process of teaching descriptive writing skill by using Think Talk and Write (TTW) at second semester of English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Madura Islamic University. The study used descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation such as observation list for students, students’ writing result, and describing the situation of class during the observation.  In analyzing the data, the researcher used simple formula such as numerical data to support the research. The result of this research, in can be concluded that using Think Talk and Writing (TTW) to teach writing especially descriptive text is very effective and help students to develop their skill in writing, it showed by the students’ response (78.26% of Students enjoyed the class), and it was also supported by the score of students’ writing skill in writing descriptive text (82.7% of students got the target score).   Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan proses pembelajaran keterampilan menulis deskriptif dengan menggunakan Think Talk and Write (TTW) pada semester dua Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan ilmu Pendidikan Universitas Islam Madura. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Dalam mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan observasi seperti daftar observasi untuk siswa, hasil tulisan siswa, dan menggambarkan situasi kelas selama pengamatan. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan rumus sederhana seperti data numerik untuk mendukung penelitian. Hasil dari penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan Think Talk and Writing (TTW) untuk mengajar menulis terutama teks deskriptif sangat efektif dan membantu siswa untuk mengembangkan keterampilan mereka dalam menulis, hal ini ditunjukkan oleh respon siswa (78,26% siswa menikmati kelas), dan itu juga didukung oleh skor keterampilan menulis siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif (82,7% siswa mendapat skor target).
