Morphological Marking Irregularity of Bahasa Indonesia and the Acquisition of English Words

Abstract: All languages share the same lexical categories such as verb, noun, adjective, and adverb. Unlike English, however, Bahasa Indonesia carries fewer consistent patterns of morphological markers for word categories. A verb, for instance, is marked with the prefix {me-} as in me-nginjak (to step on); however, other verbs do not carry this marker as in makan (eat), tidur (sleep), and tergantung (depend). As for English, the suffix {-ing} or {-ed/-en}, for instance, indicates that the root is a verb regardless of the verb transitivity. This research investigated if the irregularity in the morphological marking of Bahasa Indonesia verbs created problems in acquiring English words. A test of the "word category assignment" (Test 1) was provided to two groups of respondents: undergraduate students of English and doctoral students of Bahasa Indonesia. A "word-in-context translation into English" (Test 2) was given to a group of undergraduates of English. The first was to know if the respondents managed to assign the Bahasa Indonesia words with correct lexical categories, and the second was to know if the words were assigned with correct word categories when translated in English. This was to know if the Bahasa Indonesia and English words received the same word-category. The results show that errors in the assignment of the grammatical categories of the Bahasa Indonesia words were found pervasive among the two groups. And the lexico-grammar behavior seems to give impact on the categorization of the Bahasa Indonesia words when provided in English as also detected in the translation. It is strongly indicative that confusion in the word category assignment of Bahasa Indonesia gives impact on the acquisition of English words.Key words: morphological markers, suffix, word category, language transfer, lexico-grammarAbstrak: Semua bahasa memiliki kategori leksikal yang sama seperti verba, nomina, adjektiva, dan adverbia. Tidak seperti bahasa Inggris, Bahasa Indonesia memiliki pola penanda morfologi yang lebih sedikit untuk kategori kata. Kata kerja, misalnya, ditandai dengan awalan {me} seperti pada me-nginjak; namun verba lain tidak memiliki penanda ini seperti pada makan, tidur, dan tergantung. Sedangkan bahasa Inggris, misalnya sufiks {-ing} atau {-ed /-en}, akar kata (root) adalah kata kerja terlepas dari kata kerja transitivitas. Penelitian ini mencari tahu apakah ketidakteraturan dalam penandaan morfologi kata kerja Bahasa Indonesia menimbulkan masalah dalam mempelajari kata dalam bahasa Inggris. Tes "tugas kategori kata" (Tes 1) diberikan kepada dua kelompok responden: mahasiswa sarjana Bahasa Inggris dan mahasiswa doktoral Bahasa Indonesia. Tes "terjemahan kata-dalam-konteks ke dalam bahasa Inggris" (Tes 2) diberikan kepada sekelompok mahasiswa dari kelompok bahasa Inggris. Tes pertama untuk mengetahui apakah responden berhasil menentukan kata-kata dalam Bahasa Indonesia dengan kategori leksikal yang benar, dan tes kedua untuk mengetahui apakah kata-kata tersebut diberi kategori kata yang benar ketika diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Tujuan kedua tes tersebut untuk mengetahui apakah kata-kata dalam Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Inggris memiliki kategori kata yang sama. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesalahan dalam pengkategorian gramatikal kata-kata Bahasa Indonesia ditemukan di kedua kelompok. Perilaku lexico-grammar berdampak pada kategorisasi kata-kata dalam Bahasa Indonesia jika diberikan dalam bahasa Inggris seperti yang ditemukan dalam terjemahan. Hal ini menjadi indikasi kuat bahwa kebingungan dalam penetapan kategori kata dalam Bahasa Indonesia berdampak pada pembelajaran kata dalam bahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: penanda morfologi, sufiks, kategori kata, transfer bahasa, lexico-grammar

This study addresses the translation of passive voice in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban into Bahasa Indonesia. The study was based on descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected by applying documentary techniques. There were three chapters taken as the source of the data. They were chapters 1, 8 and 15. The findings indicated that there were two types of passive voices as a product of passive voices’ translation in Bahasa Indonesia. The passive voice retained as passive one in TL was more dominantly translated into passive voice type one than type two in TL. It caused the use of prefix di+verb base, prefix di+verb base suffix i, and prefix di +verb base+ suffix+ kan are able to represent the meaning of the SL literally and culturally. The changing of English passive voice into Bahasa Indonesia active voice when they were translated indicated that the translator has attempted to find the closest natural equivalent of the source language in aspect of grammar, style, and cultural value. In essence naturalization rate of an expression is a matter of looking for matches in level lexical categories, grammatical categories, semantic, and cultural context.   Key words: translation, passive voice, English, Bahasa Indonesia.

Doctoral study is perhaps the most rigorous educational experience anybody can have. In higher education, a great amount of effort has been focused on increasing retention and graduation rates of undergraduate students. Yet, there has been little discussion about effective qualitative measures for retaining and graduating doctoral students. This neglect masks the reality that doctoral student attrition rates in the United States have been problematic for several years. A meta-analysis conducted in 2001 showed that about 50% to 71% of doctoral candidates in the humanities did not complete their degrees.1

This paper presents the results of a quantitative and systematic investigation exploring online e-book usage at the J.N. Desmarais Library of Laurentian University over a 9-year period. The size of an e-book collection was determined to show evidence of an extremely strong relationship with the level of usage e-books experienced. Of all factors examined during the course of this study, it was the size of the collection that exhibited the strongest association to usage levels and would suggest just how important the size and content of a collection can be to patron acceptance and utilization. Of all student academic levels, doctoral students exhibited the strongest relationship with e-book usage, while undergraduate students showed signs of the weakest. Faculty demonstrated the overall weakest relationship with e-book usage.

<p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Language transfer always becomes an interesting topic to discuss in SLA. From the two types of language transfer take place in the process of language learning, this research aims to investigate the positive transfer occurs in junior high school students’ writing skill. The two languages to be involved in this research, Indonesian as L1 and English as L2. The analysis of the positive transfer within writing skill in this research is carried out under the theory of ‘Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis’ proposed by Cummins. Correlational research design is employed to analyze the correlation between the students’ L1 (Indonesian) writing ability and L2 (English) writing ability. The analysis result shows that the positive transfer in students’ writing does not exist. This happens due to the lack of exposure that the students have in practicing L2 (English) writing.</p><strong>Abstrak:<em> </em></strong>Transfer bahasa selalu menjadi topik yang menarik untuk dibicarakan dalam pemerolehan bahasa kedua. Dari dua jenis transfer bahasa yang terjadi dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi transfer positif yang terjadi dalam keterampilan menulis siswa SMP. Ada dua bahasa yang dilibatkan dalam penelitian ini, yaitu bahasa bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Analisis transfer positif dalam keterampilan menulis pada penelitian ini mengacu pada teori ‘<em>Linguistic Interdependence Hypothesis</em>’ yang digagas oleh Cummins. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode korelasional untuk menganalisis korelasi kemampuan menulis siswa dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada transfer positif yang terjadi dalam tulisan siswa. Hal ini terjadi karena kurangnya pajanan yang diterima siswa untuk mengasah keterampilan menulis dalam bahasa Inggris.

This paper describes the effort of the Center for Qur’anic Studies (PSQ) Jakarta in counter-radicalism by mediating the Islamic moderation. The initiated programs of the PSQ have been managed for making an equilibrium of the radical movement in the Muslim community. The research argues that the PSQ emphasizes a soft approach to counter-radicalisation by delving into the Quranic values of moderation and tolerance. There are two primary programs of the PSQ: caderization (as a prospective mufasir) and direct preaching. The programs involve various segments of communities conforming to their educational levels or competencies in the Quranic studies. Education for Young Exegetes (Pendidikan Kader Mufasir: PKM) is an important program for master and doctoral students in writing their thesis; Post-Memorization of the Quran (Pasca-Tahfidz) is a program for those who commit to memorize the Quran; the Daurah Bidayatul Mufassir program for undergraduate students;  the Training of Trainer (ToT) program for teachers of the Quran and Islamic preachers; and the Living Quran for high school students. The direct preaching program is designed to provide guidance and assistance to the community in the Friday preaching sermons, seminars, and religious teachings.


Henschke observed Knowles face-to-face exemplifying ‘congruence' between his talking about and modeling andragogy. McLagan focused on describing what is new in self-directed learning 4.0. Theriault talks about Aboriginal research recognizing the openness contribution of elders. Kheang proposed appropriate andragogical guidelines for USA teacher leaders in adult classrooms to enhance international undergraduate students' learning satisfaction. A number of doctoral students tested the andragogical Modified Instructional Perspectives Inventory (MIPI) application: Jones with controlling eating habits, Van Iseghem with virtual and hybrid employees in a technology firm, Primm in problem-based learners, Hamra comparing nurses in pre-ceptored and simulation learning, Anderson contrasting lean six-sigma and a combination of andragogy/leadership/organizational learning, Shostak between trial lawyers and jurors, and Curran with keyboard classes in programming and instruction. Also added are the early and advanced levels of competencies for learning facilitator, program developers, administrators, and researchers. This chapter explores all of this.

Communication apprehension has been identified as a major factor which inhibits an individual’s willingness to communicate and his/her ability to develop effective communication skills. While many prior studies have investigated oral communication apprehension among undergraduate students, there has been little research exploring this phenomenon among doctoral students. This study applied qualitative methodology via observation and interviews. The research subjects were international doctoral students from several Malaysian universities. The experiences of the students in communicating with examination panel during academic presentations (e.g. proposal and viva) are analysed and the factors contributing to their oral CA are explored.

Omah Iwak Badher Bank ialah salah satu destinasi wisata di Kabupaten Blitar yang dikelola oleh POKMASWAS Fajar Bengawan. Penelusuran reviewer pada google.co.id mendapatkan total 77 orang pemberi ulasan dengan rata-rata rating 4.5. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menilai rating destinasi terhadap responden terpilih, ialah mahasiswa S1 dan S3 Fakultas Perikanan dan Ilmu kelautan UB Malang. Total responden berjumlah 46 mahasiswa, 33 ialah mahasiswa S1 dan 13 mahasiswa S3. Kedua kelompok responden mendapat kesempatan yang sama untuk mengunjungi destinasi wisata. Rating dan penilaian terhadap destinasi dilakukan dengan memberikan 12 jenis pertanyaan kepada masing-masing resonden. Hasil penelitian mendapatkan bahwa rating responden mahasiswa S1 (3,7±0,57) dan S3 (3,7±0,48) lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan penilaian publik (4,5). Hal ini menunjukkan kualitas destinasi yang menjadi perhatian mahasiswa lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan umum. Kesediaan membayar mahasiswa S1 (Rp. 150.000 Trip-1) pada destinasi wisata relatif lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan mahasiswa S3 (Rp. 250.000 Trip-1). Sebagai destinasi wisata baru, Omah Iwak Badher Bank perlu melakukan peningkatan jasa untuk meningkatkan kualitas destinasi.Kata Kunci: kesediaan membayar, jasa wisata, wisata alam, POKMASWAS Willingness-To-Pay To Omah Iwak Badher Bank Tourism DestinationABSTRACT Omah Iwak Badher Bank is one of the tourist destinations in Blitar Regency which is managed by POKMASWAS Fajar Bengawan. A reviewer search on google.co.id found a total of 77 reviewers with an average rating of 4.5. This study aimed to assess the destination rating of selected respondents, are undergraduate and doctoral students of the UB’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science Malang. The total respondents were 46 students, 33 were S1 students and 13 were S3 students. Both groups of respondents received the same opportunity to visit tourist destinations. Rating and assessment of destinations was done by giving 12 types of questions to each respondent. The results found that the average rating of undergraduate student respondents was 3.7±0.57, and 3.7±0.48 for S3 students, respectively. These were lower than that of public assessment (4.5). This indivated that the quality of destination that are of concern to students is higher than the public. Willingness-t-pay of undergraduate students (Rp. 150,000 Trip-1) at tourist destinations was relatifly lower compared to doctoral students (Rp. 250,000 Trip-1). As a new tourist destination, Omah Iwak Badher Bank needs to improve its services to improve the quality of the destination.Keywords: willingness-to-pay, tourism services, nature tourism, POKMASWAS

This study aims to explore East Javanese literature and writers during the pandemic through the perspective of reader response. This study uses an interpretive qualitative approach. The informants in this study were professional literary readers and ordinary literary readers. as many as 84 respondents have responded to the Indonesian Literature Reader form in East Java from various categories with a distribution of 66.3 percent of undergraduate students; 18.8 percent of Lecturers; 8.4 percent of Teachers; 4.2 percent of General; Researchers and Doctoral students got the same result, namely 1.1 percent. Data collection techniques were carried out by means of interviews and questionnaires. The results of the study show the following. First, it represents the psychology of the author.” 58.9 percent of respondents answered that the literary work represented the psychology of the author, 28.4 percent did not know and 12.6 percent did not. Second, the literary work represents the author's psychology, as many as 58.9 percent answered yes. While at least answering the literary work does not represent the psychology of the author, which is 12.6 percent. Third, the psychology understood by the reader, namely Personality Psychology (existential, behavioral, psychoanalytic, humanistic) with 28.4 percent answered yes, while at least 1.1 percent answered Masculinity Psychology and Mass Psychology. Indonesian writers in East Java tend to bring up Javanese human psychology in their literary works?” Of these questions, 52.6 percent of respondents answered that Indonesian writers in East Java tended to bring up Javanese human psychology in their literary works, as many as 42.1 percent answered maybe and 5.3 percent answered that Indonesian writers in East Java tended not to bring up Javanese human psychology in their literature. his literary works.
