Starting from Jeremy Harmer’s (1994) general list and Evan Frendo’s (2012) Business English-focused perspective on teacher roles, this paper aims to discuss in more detail the different dimensions of the teaching process I have identified during my seminars at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration and provide practical examples of the teacher’s role(s) in the classroom based on the fundamental process of needs analysis. It will show that teaching ESP is indeed more of a collaborative process between the students and the teacher and, consequently, the latter’s role must shift according to the former’s learning needs.

This study investigates the communication and learning needs of Master of Business Administration (MBA) business English students and their perceptions of effective curriculum design. The research instruments are two-stage surveys of 99 MBA students from a public university in China. The results of the study show that English is not extensively used in the workplaces of MBA business English students, and that the majority of them use Chinese. Most English usage occurs in foreign businesses. The most difficult skills for MBA business English learners are found to be oral communication and listening comprehension. However, there are still very strong needs for further improvement in English communication. For the MBA business English courses, oral communication activities, especially with expatriate teachers, are particularly needed. The MBA business English courses should connect with real-world practice and be relevant to job and business needs. This study has significant implications for MBA business English curriculum reform in both Chinese and international contexts.

The aim of this paper is to analyse different approaches to business English teaching in order to find solutions to an existing situation: a course in specialised language for second year students at the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration which has to be finalised with the evaluation of the students’ linguistic competence according to CEFR. The question arising is how to combine different language teaching approaches such as CLT or TBLT and CLIL with CBI and CEFR? How to correlate the assessment of content with the assessment of linguistic competence? How to correlate linguistic levels with grades? We are trying to provide a few answers to these questions through a comprehensive literature review and personal assumptions based on teaching experience.
