AbstractIt is the labour market that decides about the popularity of a field of studies. The area where the highest number of job offers appears is reflected in the offers of universities. However, it is very often mentioned in many media that future students decide to choose social and humane studies whose market chances are evaluated on a relatively low level. In the past 10 years, because of the decrease in the birth rate, the number of Polish students at various universities declined to about 700,000 people. In these years, it was observed that the number of studying men and women declined (to almost 30%). The lowest decrease in the number of students was observed at technical universities because of the fact that, at that time, the number of female students increased there. The group of female students constitutes the one that has increased in numbers in the past 10 years. The authors of this article, using a multidimensional comparative analysis method, conducted a research on studying field preferences of female students, which is a dominant group of people studying at Polish universities.

Nowadays a transformation in the traditional roles associated to men and women is being produced, however, in disadvantaged contexts of social exclusion these inequalities between men and women are still very notable. The following work aims to reflect on the situation of romani female in disadvantaged contexts throughout their educational process and to establish the necessary strategies to promote the educational process of these students. To do it, we applied a mixed methodology based on questionnaires and focus groups with teachers and key agents from four schools located in contexts of social exclusion with high percentage of romani students. The results obtained show us the perception of teachers and agents about the difficulties of romani female students in the Educational System, and the actions that are carried out from schools to promote the educational progression of romani female students. In any case, it is important to point out that the socio-economic context determines the educational trajectory of romani women students more than the cultural characteristics, since many of the difficulties encountered by the students are more related to the contexts of social marginalization than to their culture.

The current rise of populism in many democracies all over the world has raised questions about the ability of the “one person, one vote” system to produce the most competent leaders. Though the rise of populism is a recent phenomenon, many philosophers and political scientists in the past have questioned the wisdom of “one person, one vote” and proposed the alternative. In this paper, some of the arguments against liberal democracy’s voting system will be explored, followed by the model of China and Vietnam for choosing political leaders. These two countries, known for the ability to maintain an impressive level of economic growth consistently, can be argued to present an alternative to the liberal democracy's way. Whether the China (Vietnam) model is a viable option is an issue worthwhile of ethical consideration.

In June 2016 the first project of the AIIB was approved and some experts' concern is if this new institution can be flexible with respect to the conditions of the loans and safeguards, arguing that the creators of this bank lack enough experience to maintain high standards established by the other multilateral banks. In contrast, other specialists point out that China's participation in financing at an international level is nothing new. Over the past decade, China has allowed state development banks to grant non-concessional loans. This article analyzes both approaches and contrasts them with a comparative analysis of the design of the regional development banks and the new multilateral bank led by China. In addition, it analyzes the orientation of the credit policies and safeguards of the first 21 projects approved by AIIB until 2017. The new bank is treading the middle path: on the one hand, joining the ranks of the main multilateral banks, but at the same time, trying to be an institution with a south-south vision: agile, respecting the internal policies of each country and focused on the niche of infrastructure projects.

The text tackles the problem of the condition of university, in a world blindly believing that the only possible worth measure is economic in nature and, in the name of this belief, setting in motion a ruthless bureaucratic machinery that throttles all kinds of creativity and nips in the bud all nonstandard actions and creations. The world apparently is “out of joint”, and things are taking an unexpected turn. University is one of the victims, but also one of active accomplices of this despicable situation. How to speak about the university to those who are exclusively in business of calculating balance of profits and losses? How to speak about it after deconstruction, when all great ideas have been already repeatedly and manifoldly dismounted and discredited? How to speak about it, when the university’s men and women have discredited themselves repeatedly as well, oscillating between libido sciendi and libido dominandi? Trying to solve this puzzle, we are following in the footsteps of Derrida, who in his texts about university makes appeal to Kant, and inspired by his invention, we set in motion two opposite traditions, represented by Lyotard, Bourdieu, Bauman and Readings on the one hand, and by Humboldt, Schleiermacher and Jaspers on the other. With Derrida, we make noises about the return of the ideas of truth, of the light of reason, of the autonomy of university. It is, however, a return of the specters of the past, in alignment with Derrida’s hauntology. Humanists are people of academia who see these specters, but at the same time are already specters themselves – even if they still show up here and there, they are almost insignificant. They are onlyallowed to contemplate their negligibility and to confess their habitual helplessness. University always had to defend itself, and it does defend itself today.

Over the past two decades, Romania has had an alarming increase in the number of people who have left Romania to work in other countries, with major implications for most areas of economic and social life. The disparities between the eight development regions have led, on the one hand, to the recording of totally different net migration values and, on the other hand, a deepening disparity between development regions. One of the major areas affected by the phenomenon of migration was and is education, with implications on the level of education of the younger generation. This article examines the existence of stable long-term links between school drop-out and net migration in Romania over the period 2000-2016.

The editorial1 below, written in 1898, might well have been written today, although we would have to add the influence of television on the modern child of 1977. To the student of sociology, one of the most notable features of the past few decades is the growing attention bestowed upon children. The thought now devoted to them would amaze our ancestors of three generations ago. Child-study has become one of great importance. Thousands of men and women are being trained in scores of normal schools for the one purpose of instructing young, for the work of a teacher is now believed to be one demanding extensive and peculiar education. Volumes are written annually for children and of children, while journals and magazines of the same character have increased a hundred-fold. The children are apparently considered a far more important factor in every household than they were fifty years ago. It is at least a fact that they receive more attention and are brought into much greater prominence. The average child of to-day has a score of toys where his grandfather had one. Many children are overburdened with them, and are less happy than they would be with a smaller number. The most contented and quiet children that the physician sees in his rounds are certainly not those with the most playthings. We are far from criticising the general tendency to bestow more attention upon children and more thought upon their education and training, but it cannot be denied that the matter in many families is carried to a very injudicious extreme.

The paper deals with comparative analysis of occupations in the regional labor market. Occupation is treated as a multi-dimensional space of characte- ristics, whereas a scalar form of a characteristic makes it possible to carry out a comparative analysis of occupations. Using cluster analysis of a pilot region indicators five meaningfully interpretable clusters of occupations were identified, reflecting their regional specificity.

The ʿUthmānic way of writing (al-rasm al-ʿUthmānī) is a science that specialises in the writing of Qur'anic words in accordance with a specific ‘pattern’. It follows the writing style of the Companions at the time of the third caliph, ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, and was attributed to ʿUthmān on the basis that he was the one who ordered the collection and copying of the Qur'an into the actual muṣḥaf. This article aims to expound on the two fundamental functions of al-rasm al-ʿUthmānī: that of paying regard to the ‘correct’ pronunciation of the words in the muṣḥaf, and the pursuit of the preclusion of ambiguity which may arise in the mind of the reader and his auditor. There is a further practical aim for this study: to show the connection between modern orthography and the ʿUthmānic rasm in order that we, nowadays, are thereby able to overcome the problems faced by calligraphers and writers of the past in their different ages and cultures.
