Despite the fact that female employees prevail in modern healthcare system, medicine retains gender differentiation in terms of distribution of authority, career trajectories, pay grade, etc. Such gender bias impedes balanced professional development of the medical personnel, affects their work motivation, and commitment to the profession. Medical dynasties are an important link in reproduction of human capital and preservation of the professional ethos of the medical practice. Therefore, this article explores gender peculiarities of professional identity of the hereditary physicians. The object of this research is the dynasties that have developed in medical environment with at least three generations of medical personnel. The empirical base for studying medical dynasties consists of 20 autobiographical narrative interviews (11 women and 9 men). Territorial localization of the informants is Volgodonsk, Moscow, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Saratov, Irkutsk, and Ufa. Interviews with the representatives of professional dynasties demonstrate that the process of professional identification of male physician is characterized by the strategy of self-fulfillment and self-assertiveness through work; while female physicians manifest coping strategies (if pertains to surgery particularly), as well as adaptation strategy. At the same time, namely women often reproduce conservative gender stereotypes in the professional sphere.

This article focuses upon gender differences in the satisfaction with career opportunities of civil servants in the Netherlands. Women have become better represented at all levels in the Dutch civil service in recent years, but they are still underrepresented in the higher level positions. Nevertheless, women are slightly more satisfied with their career opportunities than men are and they seem to be increasingly so. Their relatively positive evaluation of extrinsic aspects of their work situation is one of the explanations of this finding, as is their higher intrinsic work motivation compared to that of men. It is suggested that the career orientations and aspirations of women better fit the changing context of career formation in the Dutch civil service and the accompanying new psychological contract. Points for practitioners The Dutch civil service has set ambitious targets with respect to the representation of women at all levels in the service, but insight into the determinants of women’s careers in the public sector is still very scarce. The findings in this article show that there are gender differences in the weighting of intrinsic and extrinsic aspects of the work in evaluating one’s career opportunities. Besides, the article may assist human resource management practitioners in anticipating the impact of changing career trajectories on the career satisfaction of male and female civil servants.

This article examines the evolution of cryptology as a business trait and a distinct state-controlled and -regulated profession in sixteenth-century Venice. It begins by briefly discussing the systematic development of cryptology in the Renaissance. Following an examination of the amateur use of codes and ciphers by members of the Venetian merchant and ruling classes, and subsequently by members of all layers of Venetian society, the article moves on to discuss the professionalization of cryptology in sixteenth-century Venice. This was premised on specialist skills formation, a shared professional identity, and an emerging professional ethos. The article explores a potential link between the amateur use of cryptology, especially as it had been instigated by merchants in the form of merchant-style codes, and its professional use by the Venetian authorities. It also adds the profession of the cifrista—the professional cipher secretary—to the list of more “conventional” early modern professions.

Unfortunately, gender stereotypes still remain in the 21st century and require social, cultural, traditional and political radical changes. Often, this inequality is conditioned not by the laws set by the state, but by the so-called "unwritten" laws that are subject to "compulsory enforcement" and have stronger grounds than supreme legislation. Gender inequality is particularly obvious in low-income countries and extremely poor households. The aim of the research is to study and analyze gender discrimination, management and decision-making processes related to education, employment, unemployment, pension security and women's work motivation in labour market policies in the Republic of Armenia. The information of this study was obtained through various secondary sources like statistic reports, websites, besides has been used qualitative research method in particular, the depth interview method.

At the outbreak of coronavirus disease in Wuhan, China, 42,322 medical personnel from other provinces and municipalities in China volunteered to rush to Hubei to assist their colleagues. Their all-out efforts contributed to Hubei finally winning the fight to prevent and control the pandemic. The aim of this study is to explore the influence of perceived organizational support on the emotional labor of medical personnel in Hubei Province. A group of 170 medical personnel from (tertiary) hospitals who participated in the pandemic aid operation in Hubei completed self-administered questionnaires, including the perceived organizational support scale, emotional labor scale, and professional identity scale. This study used Pearson's correlation in SPSS to analyze the three variables of organizational support, emotional labor, and professional identity. Organizational support and emotional labor (r = 0.443, P < 0.01), organizational support and professional identity (r = 0.631, P < 0.01), and emotional labor and occupational identity (r = 0.511, P < 0.01) showed a significant positive correlation. The bootstrapping mediating effect test was used to determine the overall mediating effect of occupational identity. Occupational identity was a complete mediating effect between organizational support and emotional labor. The results show that a strong sense of organizational support can promote higher emotional labor among medical workers in Hubei Province. A strong sense of organizational support will also promote a stronger professional identity; further, a strong professional identity completely mediates the effect of perceived organizational support on emotional labor. These results infer that in emergency medical and health services, medical personnel can realize a high sense of organizational support, which could enhance their professional identity; this enables them to combine their professional goals with organizational goals more actively and to finally pay higher emotional labor to achieve organizational goals.

In response to a variety of challenges, accounting firms are reorganizing and reengineering their core audit services to capitalize on technology advances and to deliver more value-added services to their clients. Critics, however, have voiced concern that the changes underway undermine auditors' professionalism. Accordingly, this study examines auditors' sense of professional identity. Specifically, we provide (1) a comprehensive model of the relation between auditors' professional and organizational identities, including their potential conflict; and (2) the antecedents and consequences of auditors' professional and organizational identification, including how organizational-professional conflict relates to turnover. We find relatively high levels of professional identification and organizational identification, and a relatively low level of organizational-professional conflict among our study's 252 Big 5 auditors. Professional identification is positively related to organizational identification, but it is organizational identification and its antecedents that play the central role in the empirical model. Organizational identification decreases both organizational-professional conflict and turnover. The results have implications for both practitioners and researchers.

Purpose: To investigate the changing tendency and influencing factors of the professional identity of male nursing students in 3-year colleges and junior male nurses in China. Background: In China, the majority of nurses are 3-year nursing college graduates, among which male nurses are underrepresented. Many male nurses leave the profession 3 or 4 years after graduation. Little is known about the professional identity of Chinese male nursing students in 3-year colleges and junior male nurses. Methods: This study included 237 male nursing students from a 3-year college and 33 junior male nurses with less than 3 years of experience in China. By using the data collected with the Professional Identity Questionnaire of Nursing Students and through in-depth semistructured interviews from November 2019 to April 2020, t-test, and ANOVA analysis in SPSS22.0 were conducted and thematic analysis was applied to interviews. Results: Compared with undergraduate nursing students, Chinese male nursing students in 3-year colleges had a better professional identity, displaying a declining tendency with grades. Junior male nurses reported the lowest professional identity. Demographic factors such as family residence and presence of relatives in medical service were positively related to professional identity. Low professional identity was related to heavy workload as well as gender stereotypes. Two unique contextual factors influenced the professional identity: (a) curriculum setting and (b) nurse exams. Conclusion: College education and initial working experience were critical to professional identity formation for male nurses. Appropriate measures need to be taken to improve professional identity and promote gender diversity.

Abstract Work motivation and satisfaction are core performance factors, of a broad complexity in healthcare. In spite of all economic, political, administrative, regulatory or bureaucratic adversities, there are public Romanian hospitals striving to perform at European level. Medical personnel dissatisfaction, and shortage due to migration are significant challenges for managers. Methodology: the main research question is whether motivation is a key factor in a public Romanian hospital oriented to clinical excellence, reflected by retention of medical staff and their professional satisfaction, and also perceived by their patients. Purpose: to analyze importance and level of job satisfaction of hospital personnel in relation with other motivation components given the rough environment of Romanian public healthcare system, and its reflection on patient satisfaction. Second, a patient satisfaction survey conducted on a sample of 75 patients randomly selected from all 5 hospital departments, out of an average of approximately 230 patients per week, by applying on discharge day a questionnaire of 30 questions. Results: Great majority of our personnel appreciated as appropriate: their working conditions, communication and relationship with hierarchic boss and with hospital management team. 84.6% of medical and 90.5% of nonmedical personnel declared to be professionally very satisfied and satisfied in this hospital. Patient satisfaction analysis indicated that almost all respondents were informed by medical personnel about their conditions and rights, receiving explanations about treatment; 90% considered care received at a very good quality, except for food; 90.2% of respondents rated as very good the personnel kindness, availability, communication, information and care; 67,2% of patients stated as very satisfied and 23% satisfied with the medical care received, and all respondents would choose this hospital again if needed and even would recommend it to others. Conclusion: Anticipating their needs and motivating hospital personnel to achieve high performance is of great importance for managers and employees, by focusing on people and using appropriate tools even when no direct financial incentives are possible. Professional satisfaction has to be periodically measured, correlated with patient surveys and followed by specific actions for improvement and kept high, thus allowing climbing up to the best hospitals in Bucharest, despite significant challenges within Romanian public healthcare system. Our analysis showed the importance of job motivation and satisfaction in public hospitals, despite the rough environment, and reflection of work satisfaction on employees-patients relationship in terms of availability, communication, providing information and feedback, care, and choice/preference for future services. Thus, our research objectives were fulfilled.
