The article considers papers and reviews by Saltykov-Shchedrin, criticizing novels about “new people”. The main focus is on the period 1868–1871 when Saltykov-Shchedrin was the main critic of the magazine “Notes of The Fatherland” (“Otechestvennye Zapiski”). The polemic between magazines “Notes of The Fatherland” and “Delo” continued the debate started by the predecessor magazines – Nekrasov’s “Sovremennik” and Blagvetlov’s “Russian word”.The purpose of the article is to identify the main plot clichés in novels about “new people” presented in reviews.Results. The main criticism expressed through the parody indicates the position of the critic towards the author. Parody is a crucial part of most reviews. The article describes the main techniques of parody: selection of plot elements that are repeated in novels about “new people”, schematization of their combinations. All this brings the plot to a common denominator with many similar plots. It also demonstrates an important point of the critic: the lack of artistry cannot be compensated for by any actual social ideas.Conclusions. By the end of the 1860s, the repetition of plot patterns and hero types in novels about “new people” was a basic feature of any plot. In the reviews, Saltykov-Shchedrin drew a fairly complete picture of the plot clichés used both in democratic literature and in the anti-nihilist novel. Parody as a reflexive response to the processes taking place in literature can be considered as a symptom of a completed phenomenon. In this case, the parody marks the end of the intense but short life of the “new people” of the 1860s.

Previous studies of male homosexuals' childhood play behavior have reported a limited selection of play activities. To get a more complete picture, 25 homosexual men and 25 comparison men were interviewed extensively about their play activities during ages 3 to 13 yr. at home and ages 6 to 11 yr. at school. Differences were found on 11 specific activities. Compared to heterosexual men, fewer homosexuals played “masculine” activities and more homosexuals played “feminine” activities. More homosexual subjects also recalled poor skill in throwing or catching a ball.

By the end of the 1920s, more than 100 anti-religious museums had been opened in the Soviet Union. In addition, anti-religious departments appeared in the exhibitions of many local historical museums. In Moscow, the Central Anti-Religious Museum was opened in the Cathedral of the Strastnoi Monastery. At that time, the first museum promoting a comparative and historical approach to the study and presentation of religious artifacts was opened in Petrograd in 1922. The formation of Museum of Comparative Religion was based on the conjunction of the activities of the Petrograd Excursion Institute, the Academy of Sciences, and the Ethnographic department of Petrograd University. In this paper, based on archival materials, we analyze the methodological principles of the formation of the exhibitions at the newly founded museum, along with its themes, structure, and selection of exhibits. The Museum of Comparative Religion had a very short life before it was transformed into the Leningrad anti-religious museum, but its principles were inherited by the Museum of the History of Religion, which was opened in 1932.

BackgroundThere is mounting evidence that experience of care is a crucial part of the pathway for successful management of long-term conditions.Design and objectivesTo carry out (1) a systematic mapping of qualitative evidence to inform selection of studies for the second stage of the review; and (2) a narrative synthesis addressing the question, What makes for a ‘good’ or a ‘bad’ paediatric diabetes service from the viewpoint of children, young people, carers and clinicians?ResultsThe initial mapping identified 38 papers. From these, the findings of 20 diabetes-focused papers on the views on care of ≥650 children, parents and clinicians were synthesised. Only five studies included children under 11 years. Children and young people across all age groups valued positive, non-judgemental and relationship-based care that engaged with their social, as well as physical, health. Parents valued provision responsive to the circumstances of family life and coordinated across services. Clinicians wanting to engage with families beyond a child's immediate physical health described finding this hard to achieve in practice.LimitationsSocioeconomic status and ethnicity were poorly reported in the included studies.ConclusionsIn dealing with diabetes, and engaging with social health in a way valued by children, parents and clinicians, not only structural change, such as more time for consultation, but new skills for reworking relations in the consultation may be required.

Objective. To discuss the link between glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3) and the main biological alterations demonstrated in bipolar disorder (BD), with special attention to the redox status and the evidence supporting the efficacy of lithium (a GSK3 inhibitor) in the treatment of BD.Methods. A literature research on the discussed topics, using Pubmed and Google Scholar, has been conducted. Moreover, a manual selection of interesting references from the identified articles has been performed.Results. The main biological alterations of BD, pertaining to inflammation, oxidative stress, membrane ion channels, and circadian system, seem to be intertwined. The dysfunction of the GSK3 signalling pathway is involved inallthe aforementioned “biological causes” of BD. In a complex scenario, it can be seen as the common denominator linking them all. Lithium inhibition of GSK3 could, at least in part, explain its positive effect on these biological dysfunctions and its superiority in terms of clinical efficacy.Conclusions. Deepening the knowledge on the molecular bases of BD is fundamental to identifying the biochemical pathways that must be targeted in order to provide patients with increasingly effective therapeutic tools against an invalidating disorder such as BD.

A selection of exhibitions of sculpture held between the years 1946 and 1957 illustrates the formal transformations and diversity of methods of exhibiting sculpted forms as identifi ed through their manner of cooperating with space. The experiments, which commenced during the First Exhibition of Modern Art (1948) and were later creatively developed at the Krzywe Koło and Zachęta galleries, were based on ideas that had been formulated by K. Kobro and W. Strzemiński in Kompozycja przestrzeni. Obliczenia rytmu-czasoprzestrzennego (1931), produce a diversifi ed picture of intense formal exploration of sculpture, with the category of “space” emerging as a crucial part of the research perspective. The integrated gallery space and the setting for a work of art – which during the Sculpture in the Garden show (1957) included outdoor space – defi ned a trend that was moving towards the concept of an installation. Exhibitions indirectly connected with sculpture, e.g. Studium przestrzeni (1957), were used as research instruments in the process of extending the boundaries of sculptural forms to include their reaching into space.

We introduce SAR by Space, a concept to drastically accelerate structure-activity relationship (SAR) elucidation by synthesizing neighboring compounds that originate from vast chemical spaces. The space navigation is accomplished within minutes on affordable standard computer hardware using a tree-based molecule descriptor and dynamic programming. Maximizing the synthetic accessibility of the results from the computer is achieved by applying a careful selection of building blocks in combination with suitably chosen reactions; a decade of in-house quality control shows that this is a crucial part in the process. The REAL Space is the largest chemical space of commercially available compounds, counting 11 billion molecules as of today. It was used to mine actives against bromodomain 4 (BRD4). Before synthesis, compounds were docked into the binding site using a scoring function, which incorporates intrinsic desolvation terms, thus avoiding time-consuming simulations. Five micromolar hits have been identified and verified within less than six weeks, including the measurement of IC50 values. We conclude that this procedure is a substantial time-saver, accelerating both ligand and structure-based approaches in hit generation and lead optimization stages.

With the development of information technology, networks become a crucial part in modern society. Therefore, the improvement in routing strategy of networks is of great importance and significance. For the purpose of improving the efficiency of network traffic, we propose a new routing strategy with two tunable parameters based on local information of network. In our strategy, we include the static information, node degree, and dynamic information, buffer queue length, to guide the selection of the next transmission node. Since the importing of buffer queue length information, packets can be distributed more evenly in the network, which can reduce the congestion possibility of network. In addition, for the sake of evaluation of a routing strategy, we propose four criterions to assess the performance of network. Based on the four criterions, we first compare the experimental results of our strategy with the original strategy only including node degree information and then give some insights of our new strategy according to the simulation results.

Abstract Main focus of this paper is the issue of notional variability of the term “archaism” which occurs in historical-linguistic and dialectological works with a common denominator - dialects. The basis of the registered notional variability (1. Linguistic phenomenon which carries over from an earlier linguistic period - residual archaism; 2. Dialectal phenomenon which represents older state of language - relict archaism 3. Dialectal phenomenon which is currently receding - synchronic, structural archaism) lies in differences resulting from diachronic (the age of the linguistic phenomenon, diachronic resultativity, residuality/relictness) and synchronic (obsolescence of the linguistic phenomenon, synchronic processuality) approach to the language and its dynamics. The variability of the term archaism according to the approach used (the aspect of the national language, its development vs. the aspect of dialectal system and its structure) is illustrated on the example of linguistic phenomena characteristic for Sotak dialects of the north-eastern Zemplín. During the process of selection of examples from Sotak dialects the fact that the structure of this dialectal system includes, in a concentrated form, linguistic phenomena reflecting an older developmental state of the Slovak language (archaisms from the point of view of national language and its development) was taken into consideration.

Lovell rootstock is recommended for Peach Tree Short Life (PTSL) sites in the Southeast because it outlives Nemaguard. No genetic studies of PTSL tolerance have been done. Clonally replicated peach seedlings [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] of Lovell, Nemaguard and four F1 selections of Lovell × Nemared were tested for field survival in a high density planting on a PTSL site. Rootstock families (12 seedlings × 8 ramets each) differed in growth, survival and longevity. Genetic variation was comparable to environmental variation for most families. Based on seedling within rootstock family, estimated broad-sense heritabilities for survival and longevity were high. The use of clonally replicated seedlings allowed the selection of apparently superior individuals from both Lovell and the other more short-lived rootstock families in a single screening after 6 years. Survival of Lovell at that time was 50% compared to 16-29% for other families. Across all families, all 8 ramets were dead for 21 seedlings, whereas all 8 were alive for only 3 seedlings.

The article discusses three empirical examples of Computer Algebra System (CAS) use in Danish upper secondary school mathematics class with a recent change of teacher. All examples lead to didactical problems surrounding the situation and unclear expectations between teacher and students, involving loss of students’ mathematical skills and confidence, loss of global mathematical perspective, and the students losing sight of the mathematical objects in question. The article is the result of collaboration between two mathematics education researchers and an upper secondary school mathematics teacher, who experienced severe difficulties when taking over a class from another teacher. CAS was experienced as a crucial part of and reason for these difficulties. As a means for investigating the potential reasons behind the difficulties, a selection of constructs from the Theory of Didactical Situations (TDS) is applied. In particular, it is observed that unclear contractual relations about the role of CAS bring with them misguided winning strategies and metacognitive shifts, eventually causing the students to ‘lose the game’.
