Modern research is increasingly focused both on obtaining new knowledge and on practical application, with an emphasis on context and social significance. Due to the blurring of boundaries between disciplines, traditional academic definitions and research quality criteria are no longer sufficient. Effective quality criteria are necessary to manage funding, continuous development and promotion of scientific methods, projects and programs, the absence of such criteria hinders the development of research. Appropriate quality assessment significantly affects the support and financing of scientific research, and also targets researchers and managers to perform high-quality research and trains them to do so. Meanwhile, approaches to the evaluation of research are still based primarily on the publication of scientific results (the prestige of publication and print edition), citations and expert evaluation. Although these indicators of research quality remain relevant, additional criteria are needed to characterize research results and long-term social consequences. Among the numerous definitions of financing for the decentralization of higher education by domestic scientists, we will cite the following: decentralization concerns the provision of public services to the population, which, for its part, requires solving issues of the distribution of powers, property and financial resources.

Objective: To observe whether paediatric dentists and orthodontists balance and compensate the extraction of first permanent molars (FPMs) in children aged 7–11 years. Design: Service evaluation. Setting: UK dental teaching hospital. Methods: Retrospective analysis of FPM extraction patterns in patients aged 7–11 years that attended for extraction of FPMs from 1 January 2019 to 31 January 2020 (13-month period). Results: A total of 194 patients were included and they collectively had 435 FPMs extracted. No balancing extractions to prevent dental centreline shifts and no lower FPM compensatory extractions were performed. Compensatory extraction of good prognosis upper FPMs were performed in 64% (94/146) of cases to avoid overeruption. Orthodontic input was sought for poor prognosis lower FPMs in 76% of cases compared to 51% for poor prognosis upper FPMs. Conclusion: Compensatory extraction of good prognosis upper FPMs to avoid overeruption appears to be a common practice at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. There was also higher demand for orthodontic advice for cases presenting with poor prognosis lower FPMs compared to poor prognosis upper FPMs, which suggests that paediatric dentists may prefer for the final decision on upper FPM compensatory extractions to be made by an orthodontist, even with national guidelines available. More high-quality research on the topic is required to determine the necessity of this practice for achieving optimal long-term oral health in children.

Based on long-term fieldwork in Jordan, this paper discusses two marriage registration practices that have become topics of public debate and locus for intervention projects of development organizations: the early registration of marriages among Palestinian camp residents, and the non-registration of marriages among Syrian refugees. This paper shows how the narratives around marriage registration play a role in the production of identity and senses of belonging and provides insight into the overlaps and gaps between the discourses of development organizations and the concerns of those involved in these practices. In the Palestinian case, the early registration of marriage provides the couple with a limited but important space to get acquainted before the wedding. Women’s organizations and NGOs, however, often blame this practice for the increase in divorce rates before consummation. In the Syrian case, organizations focus on the negative legal and social consequences of not registering a marriage with the state, while conversations with Syrians reveal the obstacles they face while navigating the Jordanian legal system and their need to legitimize their non-registration of marriages.

Only those truly cryptozoic for all of 2010 could have missed the bustle and concern created by the Australian Commonwealth?s Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) initiative (http://www.arc.gov.au/era/default.htm). In common with other national research assessment exercises such as the RAE (UK) and PBRF (New Zealand), ERA is designed to assess research quality within the Australian higher education sector, identifying and rewarding those institutions and departments producing high-quality research. The linkages between achievement, recognition and reward have the potential to shape the research priorities and agendas of institutions and individual researchers.

Changes in the population dynamics of microorganisms in a soil artificially contaminated with various doses of cadmium and zinc was examined from a quantitative point of view, under laboratory circumstances. The research was based on a chernozem soil originating from the area of a long-term microelement contamination model experiment (Nagyhörcsökpuszta, Hungary), which was carried out during 1991 in the Experimental Site of the Institute of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Centre for Agricultural Researche Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, Hungary. According to the amount of bacteria, microscopic fungi and nitrifying bacteria, it can be stated that the effect of contamination can be observed even in the perspective of nearly two decades. In more cases significant changes in the number of soil bacteria and microscopic fungi could be observed, and the nitrification activity increased in case of both microelements. Therefore the further research of changes in microbial activity of these soils can provide novel scientific results.

In recent years, ideas about the regulation of the autonomic functions of the human body and the psychosomatic effects of sex hormones have expanded significantly. Dysregulation of the HPG-axis is involved in the pathogenesis of a number of stressassociated mental illnesses. Infertility and its long-term treatment is characterized by a long-term impact on patients of various stressful factors. Reproductive medicine has now made impressive advances in biotechnology. Reproductive medicine has now achieved impressive success due to the revolutionary development of biotechnologies. Nevertheless, a significant number of couples have to struggle unsuccessfully with infertility for many years, and the social consequences of this are extremely significant for the family and society as a whole. Taking into account the relationship between the mental and somatic health of infertile women, greater attention of clinicians to the mental sphere of patients, providing forced childless couples with the necessary psychological and psychiatric care will reduce stress during infertility treatment and increase patient satisfaction.

This systematic review of systematic reviews evaluates the effectiveness of exergaming on physical fitness and physical activity. A systematic literature search was conducted on 10 databases, and 1040 articles were identified. Sixty-eight articles were found potentially relevant and were selected for closer screening. Cross-referencing was conducted to find other potentially relevant articles. The quality of all relevant articles was evaluated using the AMSTAR tool. After all the duplicates were removed and inclusion, exclusion, and quality criteria were implemented, six articles remained for review. The results indicate that exergaming is generally enjoyed and can evoke some benefits for physical fitness and physical activity, but the current evidence does not support the ability of exergaming to increase physical fitness or physical activity levels sufficiently for significant health benefits. This systematic review also revealed several gaps in previous research. Additional high-quality research and systematic reviews concerning exergaming are needed.
