In the article, phonetic material is analyzed in terms of its interpretation in textbooks and in- teractive means for learning Ukrainian as a foreign language. Language learning begins with the acquaintance with its phonetic system. So properly presented phonetics makes the process of language understanding not only possible but more available during studies. While considered from this point, phonetics is described a constituent part of a language system. For this system to take in use easier, language materials aimed at foreigners have to describe phonetics with the help of audio records and visual schemes. Visualization of a language apparatus work along with voice records helps to de- velop typical Ukrainian pronunciation. The point is that quite a few of sources give the opportunity to understand the phonetics through these methods. The language learning sources mostly do not provide a foreigner with audio-visual explanations. If the materials contain physiological pictures of language organs’ positions and voice records, a learner becomes able to understand the difference between their native phonetic system and the foreign (Ukrainian) one. The author of the article proves that for completing representative schemes, findings from the experimental phonetics have to be included. So using audio-visual additions is made possible due to researches in this branch. Moreover, it is proven that incompletely presented sound system causes accent development. Argumentatively the necessity of forming new materials is described as well as a renovation of those that already exist. Conclusions are made on the basis of comparative analysis of available sources for language learning.

The problems of forming phonetic skills of the German language which is studied on the basis of the English language have been considered. The aim of this research is to make the comparative analysis of the phonetic aspects of the foreign languages that are taught one after another. There has been the attempt to analyze, generalize and systematize the material on the given topic which is presented in works in German, English, Ukrainian and Russian on the main theoretical questions connected with the process of teaching the second foreign language. It was shown that while forming phonetic skills in German, it is necessary to give the characteristics to the phonetic, rhythmic and intonation peculiarities of both German and English; to point out the difficulties of mastering the pronunciation system of German, to develop the introductory course and the material for phonetic warming-up and to work out the algorithm of introducing a new sound.

Comparing two languages may lead to the results, which would help to understand both of the languages being under the analysis deeper, and it may be helpful to see the language from a new side. The results which are achieved by the comparative method, showing common features of the languages being compared, make the process of studying a foreign language easier. As the Tatar speaking audience does not commonly study Japanese language, studying it through the mother language may make the process of studying and acquisition less difficult. Being the representatives of agglutinative languages, the Tatar and the Japanese have common features that have to be studied by the comparative linguistics. This article deals with the constructions, which consist of verbal adverb and modal verb in Tatar and Japanese languages whose meaning is to give/to receive. Such constructions are analyzed and compared in terms of their grammatical form, semantics and considered through the lens of cultural linguistics.

The current research focuses on the investigation of the VGTU students’ and foreign language teachers’ attitude towards the types of dictionaries: printed, electronic versions of printed dictionaries and dictionaries available online. The aim of the research was to set the most used type of the dictionaries by the students and foreign language teachers at VGTU. 296 students from different study programmes and 12 foreign language teachers were selected to participate in the investigation. The research data was analysed from two perspectives: qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitatively data was analysed with the help of literature review method, a questionnaire and a comparative analysis. Therefore, quantitatively data was analysed relying on the method of descriptive statistics. The collected data revealed the differences in the students’ and the foreign language teachers’ attitude. Majority of the students preferred online dictionaries to printed and electronic, whereas the selection of the dictionary type by the foreign language teachers was limited to a printed version. The same tendency could be observed relying on the question about the search of special terms. Majority of the students would rely on the dictionaries available on the Internet, hence teachers would select printed ones. Relying on the research, it could be concluded that while preparing study material and recommendations for the students, foreign language teachers should rely on students’ attitude.

The purpose of this article is to establish a comparative analysis of four mobile applications (apps) designed to acquire French as a Foreign Language (FFL). Two of them are aimed at a general public where French is one of the languages offered: Bussu and Duolingo. The other two were created exclusively for FLE learning: Le Bon Mot and Français Premiers Pas. The bibliographical review allows us to affirm that autonomy and simplicity are assets of the use of apps, while the repetitive side remains a constraint. We will then focus on the study of the exercises proposed in the selected apps with regard to the oral skills of comprehension and expression. Our study comes to the conclusion that, even if comprehension skills are quite well developed, expression skills could be improved to make these apps efficient tools.

The article contains a comparative analysis of PPP and TBLT approaches to the foreign language learning including the detailed description of the main stages of teaching and lessons planning in the framework of each approach; the advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are also considered in the article. It is also emphasized that using TBLT approach in groups of students from non-linguistic universities with a low level of foreign language proficiency (A2) is rather difficult. In such situations authors recommend considering the traditional PPP method, which allows practicing and fixing the necessary speech patterns.

In Russian and Persian, the category of indirect evidentiality points out to some unreliable source of information. The category of admirativity expresses unexpected and new information gained by the speaker. Such interrogative sentences convey combine admirativity with diff erent modal meanings. Foreign students of Russian often fi nd it hard to distinguish these meanings in Russian interrogative sentences. The authors compared Russian and Persian interrogative sentences and the linguistics tools that refl ect the admirative category with an assessment of modal meanings of possibility and motivation. This is the fi rst research of the category of admirativity in the Persian language and the fi rst publication on the comparison of Russian and Persian interrogative sentences, as well as on the relationship between admirativity and modal meanings in Russian and Persian interrogative sentences. The research objective was to perform a comparative analysis of admirativity in Russian and Persian interrogative sentences and to study the situations in which this meaning conveys the surprise of the speaker from the availability or lack of possibility to perform a certain action. In both languages, admirativity can accompany the feeling of motivation in the subject of the speech act. The findings can be useful in teaching Russian as a foreign language.
