Throughout my years at the OC, first as a parent and then also as a teacher, I have given a lot of thought to the structure and coordination of the classroom, which supports parents, children, and teachers in creating a community of learners. I had enrolled my children in the OC because I liked the idea of students, teachers, and parents all working together as a community to help children learn. After spending a great deal of time as a co-oper, I returned to the university to earn a degree in elementary education and then added the role of teacher to my established parent role in the OC. In a community of learners, a tremendous amount of work is done behind the scenes—extensive coordination, planning, and structure allow the daily learning and activities to flow smoothly. It is like a ballet, where the performers move so gracefully, flowing to their positions and cooperating with such beauty that it looks deceptively simple. Yet we know it is preparation, planning, refining, and cooperation that allow the production to run so smoothly. In the OC, the coordination is based on backstage efforts among the adults of each classroom, teamwork among children and adults, and daily and weekly routines around which children’s, co-opers’, and teachers’ activities are organized. Although the teacher plays a unique role, coordination and planning are shared among all participants and extend beyond individual classrooms to the OC program as a whole. . . . Backstage Coordinating among Adults in the Classroom . . . A key support for coordinating the classroom community is the collaboration among adults. Before the school year begins, parents and the teacher hold a meeting at a family’s home to prepare for the upcoming year, getting acquainted and establishing weekly co-oper schedules and curriculum areas for the parents’ contributions to the classroom teaching. As teacher, I figure out how to coordinate the co-opers’ schedules, interests, and talents from their work, hobbies, and outside activities to create a balanced weekly structure that becomes the framework for the children’s activities.

ABSTRACT Twenty-two Klebsiella pneumoniae and two K. oxytoca extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing isolates were collected in 1996 from patients in two pediatric wards of the University Hospital in Wrocław, Poland. Molecular typing has revealed that the K. pneumoniae isolates represented four different epidemic strains. Three kinds of enzymes with ESBL activity (pI values of 5.7, 6.0, and 8.2) were identified. The pI 6.0 β-lactamases belonged to the TEM family, and sequencing of thebla TEM genes amplified from representative isolates revealed that these enzymes were TEM-47, previously identified in K. pneumoniae isolates from pediatric hospitals in Łódź and Warsaw. One of the TEM-47-producing strains from Wrocław was very closely related to the isolates from the other cities, and this indicated countrywide spread of the epidemic strain. The pI 5.7 β-lactamase was produced by a single K. pneumoniae isolate for which, apart from oxyimino-β-lactams, the MICs of β-lactam–inhibitor combinations were also remarkably high. Sequencing revealed that this was a novel TEM β-lactamase variant, TEM-68, specified by the following combination of mutations: Gly238Ser, Glu240Lys, Thr265Met, and Arg275Leu. The new enzyme has most probably evolved from TEM-47 by acquiring the single substitution of Arg275, which before was identified only twice in enzymes with inhibitor resistance (IR) activity. TEM-68 was shown to be a novel complex mutant TEM β-lactamase (CMT-2) which combines strong ESBL activity with relatively weak IR activity and, when expressed inK. pneumoniae, is able to confer high-level resistance to a wide variety of β-lactams, including inhibitor combinations. This data confirms the role of the Arg275Leu mutation in determining IR activity and documents the first isolation of K. pneumoniae producing the complex mutant enzyme.

AbstractObjective:The study was designed to explore the subjective perspective on end-of-life practices in three different groups of pediatric onco-hematologic nurses.Method:In 2004–2005 each member of the nursing staff of the Pediatric Onco-Hematology Ward of the University of Padua, Italy, and the Oncology Ward and Home Assistance Module of the Giannetta Gaslini Hospital, Genoa, Italy was interviewed using a semistructured questionnaire with open questions on end-of-life procedures. The results were returned to the interviewees through group meetings. Here, we examine replies given regarding terminal sedation. Results:With regard to the nurses from Padua, common features came together in a consolidated practice. The amount of suffering and physical pain was considered an element in determining the use of sedation: “when there is atrocious suffering.” Another aspect was “painful awareness,” the difficulty in being able to bear the fact that the child is aware that death is imminent. The nurses from Genoa stated that the procedure was adopted mainly for three reasons: to sedate the pain, to calm the hunger for air, and to control the anguish caused by the realization that death was imminent or unavoidable. It was noted that the nursing staff of the Home Assistance Unit, Genoa found themselves in a privileged position regarding this procedure both because of the strong relationship established among child, parents, and nurse, and because of being able to take shared decisions after in-depth discussion.Significance of results:The results enlighten the critical role of the nursing staff with respect to this procedure, given the involvement with the families and their ability to understand the child's demands and intimate expectations.

This article views behind the success of the Finnish basic education in the PISA assessments in the years 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2009. Success is here defined not only as excellent learning outcomes in reading literacy, mathematics and science, but also as a high level of educational equity and equality. The achieved outcomes are attributable to several factors, of which this article addresses especially the basic education reform of 1972-1977 and the university based teacher education leading to a master’s degree. Additional attention is paid to the autonomy of the municipalities (counties), schools and teachers in building and implementing the curricula, on the respect for learning and teachers in the Finnish society, and on the role of the Finnish evaluation system in supporting the student’s learning. Developing education is a long range effort continuing across election terms, as education is understood to be a cornerstone for the development of the society. This fact justifies our describing some of the Finnish national background bases for the comprehensive basic education system, where all students study in the same group.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jer.v4i1.9619 Journal of Education and Research, March 2014, Vol. 4, No. 1, pp. 1-18

This unique work in its subject matter, genre and language was prepared during the first wave of the coronavirus epidemic. The theoretical background of the author’s research work is perfectly adjusted to Patyi’s “university triangle” model (“Nemzeti Közszolgálati Egyetem, Intézményfejlesztési Terv 2015–2020,” n.d.), which basically illustrates the functioning of a university in a triple system of the activities “research—education—curriculum development,” and Paavola and Hakkarainen’s trialogical model (2005), which—through the competence of cooperation—provides an opportunity todevelop students’ creativity, to keep their motivation at a high level, to develop competencies required by the labour market, and to implement experiential teaching–learning. A questionnaire survey was used with closed and open questions among students who have been learning English for law enforcement at the University of Public ServiceFaculty of Law Enforcement (hereinafter: UPS FLE) using the corpus-based dictionary method. The author’s acquaintances registered on Facebook social media platform were also involved in the research. The 96-page collection of words and phrases based on the theoretical background involves 403 English words, word phrases, neologisms and their definitions related to the coronavirus epidemic and COVID-19 situation during the first wave.

This research work has aimed at investigating the level of political awareness among the Al Ain University students and the role of the university in boosting it by using the descriptive survey method. Indeed, this study has relied upon the questionnaire and the interview as research tools, as well as on the intentional sample where 10 teaching team members were interviewed to answer the third question, and on the random sample where the questionnaire was distributed among 980 students- males and females to answer the first and second questions. The findings of this study revealed that there was a considerably high level of political awareness among the university students. It was also found that there were differences in the level of political awareness among students depending on the faculty, which favoured the students belonging to faculties of humanities. The differences also favoured male students when the variable was gender and 4th year students when the variable was the year of study. In addition, the study showed that the university played 15 important roles in developing political awareness as was unanimously agreed by the members of the sample. These roles were identified by using recurrences and percentages ranging between 50 and 90%, while those with percentages lower than 50% were not taken into account.   Received: 17 December 2020 / Accepted: 26 January 2021 / Published: 5 March 2021
