ABSTRACT  The current study entitled The Concept of Literature and Literary Criticism in Kamil Hassan Basirs’ Views” is a critical study that deals with Kamil Hassan Basirs’ literary views and criticism as far as theoretical basis is concerned. Therefore, the study revolves around what is called ( critical criticism). The purpose behind choosing his works is related to his well- informed knowledge regarding literature in general and criticism in particular. Furthermore, it serves to be a scientific reflection on the works of a treasury and outstanding critic in the country considering that his works have not been paid much attention within the field of literary criticism as well as in an academic setting.  The aim behind this study is to review and evaluate, on one hand, Basirs’ views which have a remarkable position within literary essays in general and critical essays in particular. On the other hand, his views carry his own forms and distinguishing features. For this reason, the researcher has found it necessary to take his views into consideration under the concept critical criticism.  The method of the study is analytical descriptive. It consists of two main parts. The first part sheds some light on Basirs’ views regarding poetry, poets and specifying the role and the participation of Kurdish literature in Kurdish society. The second part is devoted to the terms and concepts concerning criticism in Basirs’ viewpoints. It also studies the qualifications of the critic and the requirements of the scientific criticism. The paper ends with the conclusion in which some important points are concluded.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the literary criticism that Mme d'Épinay consecrates to the Correspondance littéraire of Grimm and Meister. The epistolary framework in which the critical articles studied are presented deserves particular attention, since it allows us, on the one hand, to establish the different functions developed by Louise d'Épinay in the circle of Grimm's collaborators, and, on the other hand, to highlight the dialogic structure that will dominate the literary style of Mme d'Épinay.

Abstract Wiegand's “Δ A” function, as represented by the double integral of tensile with respect to elongation and volume of a pigment over the base mix, is a practical means of expressing the reënforcing effect of the filler. On the other hand, the volume range over which the bonding of the filler is greater than the strength of the rubber matrix gives a better understanding of the condition of the filler in the rubber. Apparently, the importance of fatty acids and other polar compounds in dispersions can be put on a sound theoretical basis.

Edward Lear wrote a well-known autobiographical poem that begins “How pleasant to know Mr Lear!” But how well do we really know him? On the one hand he is, in John Ashbery’s words, “one of the most popular poets who ever lived”; on the other hand he has often been overlooked or marginalized by scholars and in literary histories. This book, the first full length critical study of the poet since the 1980s, sets out to re-introduce Lear and to accord him his proper place: as a major Victorian figure of continuing appeal and relevance, and especially as a poet of beauty, comedy, and profound ingenuity. It approaches Lear’s work thematically, tracing some of its most fundamental subjects and situations. Grounded in attentive close readings, it connects Lear’s nonsense poetry with his various other creative endeavours: as a zoological illustrator and landscape painter, a travel writer, and a prolific diarist and correspondent.

In [1] we have considered a certain system L and shown that although its axioms are considerably weaker than those of [2], it suffices for purposes of the topics covered in [2]. The purpose of the present paper is to consider the system L more carefully and to show that with suitably chosen definitions for numbers, the ordinary theory of real numbers is also obtainable in it. For this purpose, we shall indicate that we can prove in L a certain set of twenty axioms used by Tarski which are sufficient for the arithmetic of real numbers and are to the effect that real numbers form a complete ordered field. Indeed, we cannot prove in L all Tarski's twenty axioms in their full generality. One of them, stating in effect that every bounded class of real numbers possesses a least upper bound, can only be proved as a metatheorem which states that every bounded nameable class of real numbers possesses a least upper bound. However, all the other nineteen axioms can be proved in L without any modification. This result may be of some interest because the axioms of L are considerably weaker than those commonly employed for the same purpose. In L variables need to take as values only classes each of whose members has no more than two members. In other words, only classes each with no more than two members are to be elements. On the other hand, it is usual to assume for the purpose of natural arithmetic that all finite classes are elements, and, for the purpose of real arithmetic, that all enumerable classes are elements.

The popularization of the digital humanities and the return to formalism are overdetermined by the perceived crises in the humanities. On the one hand, the new formalism harks back to a professionalizing strategy begun by the New Critics with John Crowe Ransom's “Criticism, Inc.,” drawing strength from close reading's original polemic against industrialism. On the other hand, the digital humanities reimagine professional labor in ways that seemingly approximate postindustrial norms. These contradictory but inextricably related visions of professional futures restage a conflict between literature and data, reading and making, that has been misrecognized as a conflict between literature and history. Approaching these tensions by way of historicist critique can illuminate the extent to which the debate between literature and data will define critical practice in the twenty-first century.

This article argues that the English iambic pentameter (EIP) has other important features in addition to the five parameters identified by Hanson and Kiparsky’s (1996) parametric theory ( position number and size, orientation, prominence site and type). One of these features is that EIP contains a mixture of pausing (French) and running (Italian) lines, as determined by whether the syllable in position 4 is word-final. A study of the frequency with which the Italian line is used in the two centuries after Chaucer’s death reveals that Hoccleve and the Scots poets, Henryson, Dunbar and Douglas, adhered fairly closely to Chaucer’s EIP verse design. On the other hand, several generations of English poets, Lydgate, Wyatt, Surrey and Sidney, experimented with alternative types of line that might well have developed into the canonical English long-line metre. Ultimately, however, the examples of Spenser and Shakespeare proved decisive in ensuring the victory of Chaucer’s metre. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Wordsworth, Keats and Browning were among the major poets who consolidated that victory and exploited the Italian line in order to accommodate their own or their age’s choice of diction. The mixture of French and Italian lines in decasyllabic verse is one of the distinguishing features of EIP. Although other factors affect the proportions in this mixture to a small extent, they are primarily the result of individual poets’ aesthetic choice. Significantly, all the English poets after Spenser whose verse is analysed in this article have favoured a more evenly balanced mixture of French and Italian lines than the random deployment of their lexicon would have produced.

We derive the analytical estimators for the horizontal and vertical source positions in 3D Euler deconvolution as a function of the x‐, y‐, and z‐derivatives of the magnetic anomaly within a data window. From these expressions we show that, in the case of noise‐corrupted data, the x‐, y‐, and z‐coordinate estimates computed at the anomaly borders are biased toward the respective horizontal coordinate of the data window center regardless of the true or presumed structural indices and regardless of the magnetization inclination and declination. On the other hand, in the central part of the anomaly, the x‐ and y‐coordinate estimates are very close to the respective source horizontal coordinates regardless of the true or presumed structural indices and regardless of the magnetization inclination and declination. This contrasting behavior of the horizontal coordinate estimates may be used to automatically delineate the region associated with the best solutions. Applying the Euler deconvolution operator inside this region would decrease the dispersion of all position estimates, improving source location precision.

What are the ideological and artistic peculiarities of collections of articles published in connection with a scholar’s birthday and how are they different from high-ranking academic journals? In this article, the reviewers analyse two collections of articles on philology issued to commemorate scholars’ birthdays and try to answer these questions. Except for expressing respect, such collections are manifestations of the cultural and academic views and achievements of the scholar, their followers, and students. Such collections aim to draw attention to the personality of a scholar who has established a school and is developing their field of knowledge; also, it is an opportunity to evaluate their achievements and the achievements of their school, which has its own methods and followers. The reviewers analyse materials of both collections and conclude that they can be characterised by a diversity of views and methods from literary criticism on Russian literature compared with precedent texts of world literature. On the other hand, the disadvantage of such collections is the fact that they contain many articles authored by people willing to express their gratitude to the scholar but failing to comply with the theme and concept of the collection. The reviewers conclude that, overall, such collections are meant as an attempt at a collective search for scholarly truth. Together with high-ranking journals indexed in Russian and international databases, such collections are a valuable fund, accumulating scholarly research works as they focus on the new discoveries of different schools of knowledge.

Abstract: Modern Indonesian literature can be said to be born around 1920s with the publication of modern Indonesian literary works by Balai Pustaka. Amongst the works published by Balai Pustaka in the 1920s ; there are most popular works namely Sitti Nurbaya (1922) ; Azab dan Sengsara(1927) and Salah Asuhan (1928) representing the tone of 1920s literary productions. This paper aims to look at images of women in those three works written by male authors ; using feminist literary criticism. By means of close reading technique; the study uses feminist literary criticism to examine and (re)examine the images of women portrayed in those three works. The finding shows that on one hand some women are still trapped with the shackle of patriarchy, but, on the other hand, some women are not simply passive victims of patriarchy: these women still attempt to escape from the patriarchal chain and cut out the patriarchal oppression. Key Words: modern Indonesian literature; 1920s; Balai Pustaka; women; feminist literary criticism Abstrak: Sastra Indonesia modern dapat dikatakan lahir sekitar tahun1920-an dengan publikasi karya sastra Indonesia modern oleh Balai Pustaka. Kata-Kata Kunci: sastra Indonesia modern; tahun 1920-an; Balai Pustaka; perempuan; kritiksastra feminis
