The conservation of forests is of great interest to all of society, as it guarantees the basic environmental services that support the life and economy of the country. In this study, a diagnosis of land use and vegetation cover was carried out in order to assess the conflicts between human activities and the areas of native Cerrado remnant in the sub-basin of the Córrego do Veado and propose adaptation actions, from the point of view of the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, based on the legislation and the physical characteristics of the basin. The study was based on orbital images and vector data, processed in a Geographic Information System for the generation of cartographic products. In the basin, 81 rural properties were registered, the majority consisting of properties with less than four fiscal modules, where the main form of land use was Pasture over consolidated areas. The basin contains around 20% of the area covered by native Cerrado vegetation, however most of the properties do not have a Legal Reserve area and many tributary and stream springs are degraded. The proposed actions refer to the recovery of the strips of riparian vegetation that do not comply with the minimum width established by the legislation, and the areas of Legal Reserve; the readjustment of use in areas aimed at the conservation of biodiversity and the evaluation of the tourist potential of the region, as a form of sustainable use in areas with high declivity, highly erodible soils and where the Cerrado vegetation is preserved. Keywords:River Basin, Conservation, Ecosystem Service, Forest Code.

AGRO-FOREST LANDSCAPES IN THE PERI-URBAN AREA OF A MEDIUM-SIZED CITY: AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRESERVE OR DETERIORATE FORESTS? In recent decades, San Cristóbal de Las Casas, a medium-sized city in Chiapas State, has shown rapid and chaotic growth. For studying the landscape structure in a peri-urban area of this city (Huitepec Hill) and its relationship with rural and urban social appropriation processes of the territory, a geographic analysis of land use was integrated into a qualitative social analysis through interviews and questionnaires. A heterogeneous and diversified landscape can be observed in this peri-urban area where the remaining forests are important, but show internal variations that depend on forms of use and the social stakeholders who are present. This landscape plays relevant roles in the conservation of natural resources and the provision of environmental services for the benefit of the local and urban population. However, its future condition is highly uncertain.

Western Bahia is a critical region in Brazil’s recent expansion of agricultural output. Its outstanding increase in production is associated with strong growth in cropland area and irrigation. Here we present analyses of Western Bahian historical changes in land use, including irrigated area, and suitability for future agricultural expansion that respects permanent protection areas and the limits established by the Brazilian Forest Code in the Cerrado biome. For this purpose, we developed a land use and land cover classification database using a random forest classifier and Landsat images. A spatial multicriteria decision analysis to evaluate land suitability was performed by combining this database with precipitation and slope data. We demonstrate that between 1990 and 2020, the region’s total agricultural area increased by 3.17 Mha and the irrigated area increased by 193,480 ha. Throughout the region, the transition between the different classes of land use and land cover followed different pathways and was strongly influenced by land suitability and also appears to be influenced by Brazil’s new Forest Code of 2012. We conclude that even if conservation restrictions are considered, agricultural area could nearly double in the region, with expansion possible mostly in areas we classify as moderately suitable for agriculture, which are subject to climate hazards when used for rainfed crops but are otherwise fine for pastures and irrigated croplands.

<p>In recent years, safeguarding approaches and environmental management initiatives have been adopted both by international institutions and local governments , aimed at sustainable use of natural resources and their restoration, in order to manage hazard level of climate change consequences (urban flooding, droughts and water shortages, sea level rise, issues with food security).</p><p>Cities represent the main collectors of these effects, consequently they need to implement specific adaptation plans mitigating consequences of such future events: Green Infrastructures (G.I.) fall within the most effective tools for achieving the goal. In the urban context, they also identify themselves as valid strategies for biodiversity recovery and ecological functions.</p><p>This work analyzes the role of a G.I. in an urban environment, with the aim of quantifying Ecosystem Services (E.S.) provided by vegetation: through usage of <em>i-Tree</em>, specific software suite for E.S. quantification, the sustainability offered by “Le Vallere” park, a 34-hectares greenspace spread between municipalities of Turin and Moncalieri (Italy), was analyzed, in collaboration with the related management institution (<em>Ente di gestione delle Aree Protette del Po torinese</em>). The study, carried out using two specific tools (<em>i-Tree Eco and i-Tree Hydro</em>), focuses on different aspects: carbon sequestration and storage, atmospheric pollutants reduction, avoided water runoff and water quality improvement are just some of the environmental benefits generated by tree population. Tools enable to carry out the analysis also from an economic point of view, evaluating monetary benefits brought by the green infrastructure both at present day and in the future,  taking into account climate change effects through projections based on the regional climatic model COSMO-CLM (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios).</p><p>The work led to deepen potential held by the greenspace, helping the cooperating management institution  to plan future territorial agenda and to find innovative approaches for an integrated and sustainable hazard control.</p>

Due to the occurrence of considerable areas of wetlands in the world, the wise, sustainable use of these lands is one of major importance for ecologists and agriculturists. As the presence of indicator species and plant communities can be a measure of the compatibility between plants and edaphic conditions in these regions, the ecological niches of plant species in part of the southern coastal areas of the Caspian Sea have been studied to show the correlation of each species with its own habitat. The plant communities were separated with Ward's cluster analysis. The correlation of these communities and plant species with environmental factors was investigated with the CCA method, using PC-Ordination-4 software. The results showed that the soil EC, water table, soil pH, SAR and ESP were 14-157 dS/m, 0-240 cm, 6.5-8.5, 13.4-84.8 and 2-55%, respectively. This range of values, in addition to creating ecological niches for species with different ecological roles, was also effective in the formation of plant communities. The analysis of vegetation and soil data with the CCA method showed the relationships between soil factors and vegetation. In spite of the dominance of the species Halocnemum strobilaceum in all the plant communities, the correlation of this species with plant species such as Aeluropus littoralis, Salicornia europaea, Aeluropus lagopoides,Salsola aurantia and Puccinella distans in relation to changes in EC, water table, pH, SAR and ESP, is important from the point of view of sustaining the physical environment and ecological function. The simplification of these ecosystems (by drainage, agriculture, etc.) may disturb the natural equilibrium. As these ecosystems are susceptible and changes in their use are costly from the ecological and economic points of view, the wise use of ecosystems in their natural forms (rangelands and habitats) is recommended to prevent the spread of salinity and to protect habitats and biodiversity.

Synergi analysis of the tugging of interest  in agricultural production and envirometal services. Conversion of land functions into intensive agriculture can cause degradation or declining land capability. This is because farmers' orientation is always on production and ignoring environmental services. Intensive agriculture always causes environmental problems, resulting in a tug of war in agricultural production and environmental services. The purpose of this study is to find out how much intensive land use has resulted in a deterioration of environmental services. This research was carried out on intensive agricultural land (Horticulture) (PI), AF-CK (cloves), AF-KK (cocoa), AF-KM (candlenut), AF-KP (coffee), owned by farmers and AF-HS (forest secondary) in Tn. Kelimutu National. This research uses interviews and exploration methods. The results showed that the level of intensification of horticultural land use in Kelimutu was classified as very intensive with an R-value and an LUI index = 79, the survey results showed that the density of earthworm populations in SPL-AF was as low as the population in SPL-HS, on average only 3 tails m-2, while in SPL-PI the average is only 0.24 m 2. The earthworm biomass in AF is about 69% smaller than the worms found in SPL-HS; earthworm biomass average in SPL-AF 15 g m-2 while in SPL-HS an average of 47 g m-2; and the smallest worm biomass found in SPL-PI averaging about 2.3 g m-2. The diversity of earthworms is significantly different between land uses. The average diversity of earthworms (H ') reaches 0.88; Index R = 0.34; and Index E = 0.92. The four species that dominate are 1). Pontoscolex (endogeik, INP = 48.52), 2). Megascolex (endogeik; INP 44,61), 3). Pheretima (epigeic, INP 35.29), and 4). Lumbricus (epigeic, INP = 13.01)

An effective implementation of the sustainable use of agricultural land program is impossible without reliable results of the current state of the problem. In this sense, the correct selection of indicators and methods for determining the level of stability is important. The authors proposes the definition of the agricultural land use sustainability integral indicator based on three methodological approaches: the construction of the indicators system, each of them reflects some aspects of the land use sustainability at the macro level (according to the specific issues); the construction of the integral indicator for comparing the countries’ land use sustainability. According to the given methods it has been proved that agricultural land use in the countries of the post-socialist camp has a positive dynamics, but the sustainability indicators for all indicators have not achieved yet.
