Empowering Students’ Writing Skill through Performance Assessment

It is quite common to our understanding that classroom assessment outcomes are not sensitive to the goal of teaching and learning language skills. More specifically, the assessment cannot allow the students to present what they know and what they are supposed to do. The purpose of classroom assessment is to inform teaching and to improve learning. Performance assessment gives the students a chance to demonstrate their knowledge and absorb a wide variety of information on language teaching and learning activities. This study aims to analyze the implementation of performance assessment in improving students' writing skills and disclosing the students' psychological factors on implementing performance assessment in the writing learning process. This is a descriptive qualitative study that was carried out for three months, namely October-December 2018. The participants of the research were 28 English department students of Udayana University. The instruments used were writing rubric, questionnaires, and interviews.  These data were analyzed with the assistance of the excel chart data series software program and then followed by qualitative interpretation. The questionnaire data were displayed in the form of a percentage, while the data from the interviews were narrated in detail based on students' responses. The findings of the study reported a positive impact on students' writing skills (the mean post-test result = 78), boosts students' interest and awareness (92,85%), self-esteem (85,71%), and their motivation (78,57%). The practitioners are expected to implement performance assessment in enhancing students to be a competent English writer.

The aim of this study is to find out whether or not Quantum Teaching Strategy are effective to help students enhance their writing skills. This study was carried out at SMA Negeri 1 Manganitu. The research used quantitative research. Hopefully, this research can be useful to provide information to teachers in teaching and learning activities so that teachers are more creative and know how to improve students' curiosity, to gain students’ interest in learning English in class. The population of this research was the students of SMA Negeri 1 Manganitu and class X that consisting of 20 students was taken as sample. This study used a pre-experimental, pre-test, and post-test design with only one group. The researcher gathered data by asking students to complete a written test firstly also known as pre-test the apllied Quantum Teaching Strategy, secondly delivered with written test also known as post-test. After these activities, the researcher analysed the data by comparing the mean score of pre-test and post-test. The result of post-test score was 64.2 compared to the total mean = 17.85 as the result of pre-test. This meant that Quantum Teaching Strategy was an effective way to improves student’s writing skill in recount text especially in personal recount text. It was recommended to teachers to use Quantum Teaching Strategy in order to maximize students’ capability in learning English.

Origami is a kind of method for teaching language through dialogues whichstresses on the students’ habit formation by repetition, memorizing grammatical structures through substitutions, singular-plural and tense transformations etc, using the target language and the culture where the language is spoken. The objective of this research was to find out the effect of Origami in teaching writing procedure text. Method design this research was a true-experimental method. The population of this research was the second year students of SMA Muhammadiyah Mataram in Academic year 2016/2017. This study the writer took all population as the samples that consisted of 38 students. Because the population less than 100, they divided into two classes, namely experimental class 21 and control class 17. The writer collected the data using the testing method pre and post-test. According to Hughes rubric and t-test formula theory. The result of this research showed that the mean score of experimental group 9.5 and the mean score of control group 2.9. Based on t-test it showed that t- value 11.9 and after consulting to t-table, the t-value was higher than t- table. To conclude origami teaching and learning is more effective to improve students’ writing procedure text, this can be seen from the results of test score, it shows that the experimental class which was given treatment using origami teaching and learning got a higher score than control class without taught by used origami teaching and learning method. Besides the origami could improve the students’ motivation, the origami could attract the students’ attention, the origami help the students to memorize the vocabulary and the origami make the teaching and learning activities interesting. Presentation in which the writer presented the materials by using origami as media the students clearly and easily to understand. The writer concluded that Origami can warn up the student that was done to make students interested in learning writing procedure text and has a positive effect in teaching writing procedure text.

This study aims to enhance students’ writing skills through Daily Journal writing. This research was divided into three steps: giving pre-test, giving treatment (writing daily journal), and giving posttest. The result showed significant difference between control and experimental group. Experimental participants was improved through the writing of daily journal, and the score gained by participants showed that there was a significant effect on students’ writing skills. The achievements showed that the mean difference of post-test scores between the two groups was -.45433 and for the standard error mean was .03840 with pValue .050 (see Table 3), means that Ha is accepted and Ho is not accepted. It means, writing daily journal is strong enough to improve the students’ writing skills. Keywords: Journal Writing, Writing Skills, Daily Journal Variations

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a developed writing module on enhancing the General Foundation Program students’ writing skills. The study made use of a pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design. The study participants incorporated 70 Omani students and 2 EFL teachers. The students were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group incorporated 35 students who studied English at the General Foundation Program of Sur Nursing Institute. The control group involved 35 students who took an English course at The General Foundation Program Centre in Muscat. Both institutions function under the auspices of the Omani Ministry of Health. The control group studied the ministry’s writing syllabus, whereas the experimental group studied the writing module. The writing pre-test was done before module delivery and the post-test was done after the intervention. ANCOVA test was utilized to draw a statistical analogy between the mean scores of tests of both groups. The test findings divulged that there was a statistically significant mean difference between the control and experimental group’s scores in the writing post-test. The module significantly enhanced the experimental group’s writing skills.

This research was design to know the effect of learning model multimedia-based toward the students’ English ablility at senior high school of Kolaka Regency. The question of the research was “Is there an effect of learning model multimedia-based toward the students’ English ablility at senior high school of Kolaka Regency? The objective of the research was to find out the data whether the learning model multimedia-based has an effect toward the students’ English ablility at senior high school of Kolaka Regency. The significant of the research was expected the model can be used as reference learning model to improve the students’ English ablility.<strong> </strong>The design of the research was pre-experimental design. The research was conducted at the first-class students of Senior High School 1 Wundulako in Kolaka District. The data were collected by using English test which given at the pre-test and the post-test.<strong> </strong>In analysed the students’ test result, which the mean score of pre-test was 33,8806 and the mean score of post-test was 69,4058, while the t-table 18,55&gt;2,042 t-test. Its mean that the learning model multimedia-based has an effect toward the students’ English ablility. Refering to the findings and discussions of the research, it can be concluded that the learning model multimedia-based has an effect toward the students’ English ablility at senior high school of Kolaka Regency. It was based on the mean score in pre-test and post-test.Based on the conclusion of the research, the researcher suggests to the teacher, especially English teacher in Kolaka Regency to use learning model multimedia-based in teaching and learning process to improve the students’ English ability.

This research aims to find out whether or not any significant effect of the Dictogloss technique on upgrading students’ competence in writing narrative text. The subjects of this research were all students in class XI MIA 5 of SMAN 4 Kendari which consisted of 34 students, but only 32 students who were participated in the pre-test and post-test. The researcher collected data by given pre-test to know students’ writing competence. The treatment conducted in teaching and learning process by applying Dictogloss technique. The post-test to know students’ writing competence after being taught by applying Dictogloss technique. The data were analyzed by using paired samples t test. The result showed that the use of Dictogloss technique is significantly influenced students’ writing competence which is reflected by the enhanmcement of students mean score from pre-test to post-test. It can be seen from the mean score of post-test is 77,78, while the mean score of pre-test is 53,19. Furthermore, the result of hypothesis testing showed that the value of Sig.(2 tailed) was 0,000 while the significance ρ value is 0,05, means that (H0) is rejected and (H1) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of applying Dictogloss technique on upgrading students’ competence in writing narrative test of SMAN 4 Kendari.

The hybrid method of video and 360° image in silat learning is the solution of video based learning issues on the minimum of interactive activities, lack of interaction between user and video and limited point of view. The aim of this research is to identify the effectiveness of silat learning courseware using the hybrid method of video and 360° image towards students' achievement in silat subject. This research is also done to identify the usability of silat learning courseware based on easy to learn, interface and satisfaction matrixes. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to measure students' achievement while usability questionnaire was used to measure the usability of silat learning courseware using the hybrid method of video and 360° image. The research found that silat learning courseware using the hybrid method of video and 360° image gave positive impact towards students' achievement in silat subject. The level of usability of the silat learning courseware is high with the mean score for all the matrixes is over 4.00. This research shows that the usage of multimedia courseware especially using the hybrid method of video and 360° image is useful for students, help them to increase their achievement in silat and encourage the usage of multimedia based learning in silat learning in Malaysia.

This study is a classroom action research. The general objective of this study is improving students’ writing skill through outdoor activity. While the specific objective of this research are (1) whether or not outdoor activity can increase the students’ writing content of descriptive text of the second year of Mts Sudirman Kopeng  Getasan. (2) it describe whether the outdoor activity can improve  the students’ writing skill in developing paragraph. This classroom action research was conducted at MTs Sudirman Getasan. The procedure of the research consisted of planning, action, observing, and reflection. The observation during the process of English teaching and learning was helped by the collaborator. In this research,  the writer acted as a practitioner. The test was in the form of pre-test and post –test conducted in cycle 1, cycle 2, and cycle 3. The research result were: (1)  using outdoor activity as a method can improve students’ writing skill, its proved with the student’s improvement score. The mean score of the pre-test of the students was 57 (very poor) and the mean score of the post- test 70 (good). The mean of the post-Test is higher than the mean of the pre-Test ( 64.53>56.56), the mean of the post-test in cycle 2  is higher than mean of cycle 1 (70.59>64.53) and the mean of the post –Test cycle 3 is higher than cycle 2 (74.56>70.59). the proven result of the implementation was 75%. (2) The effectiveness of using outdoor activity in improving students’ writing skill is proved from the t-test and t-table in cycle 1 (9.67>2.042) which the score of t-test was higher than the score of t-table and the result of t-test and t-table in cycle 3 (15.11>2.042) also showed that the score of t-table.

The research aims at improving students’ writing skills using collaborative learning at 10th-grade students of the Senior High School 1 of Veteran Sukoharjo. This research was a classroom action research. The technique used in this research consisted of planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The research was applied in two cycles. Every cycle consisted of three meetings. In the technique of collecting data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative techniques. The qualitative data were collected from documentation, observation and interview with teachers and some students. The quantitative data were collected from the score of the students’ pre-test ad post-test, validity and reliability. The result of the research showed that collaborative learning could improve students’ writing skills. By using collaborative learning, the students showed active and have self-confidence in the teaching-learning process. This method brought positive result. The progress of the students’ writing skills also can be seen from the result of the tests score. In the multiple-choice pre-test, the mean score of the pre-test was 59,7and improved to be 68,1in post-test 1 of cycle 1. In cycle 2, the mean score of post-tests 2 was 79,7. In the essay pre-test, the mean score of the pre-test was 61,3and improved to be 69,1in post-test 1 of cycle 1. In cycle 2, the mean score of post-tests 2 was 78,4. It could be concluded that there was a significant improvement in the students writing skills after using collaborative learning.

This research investigated whether or not there is the influence of English song towards the student’s pronunciation. This research used a quantitative method. Research design is an experimental class and control class, two classes were selected from eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Ciasem Subang. The Quasi-Experimental Research was conducted in four meetings. The data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process, test, questionnaire, and interviewing the students. The research result of the analysis quantitative and qualitative data were as follows. The analysis of quantitative data, mean score of pre-test in the experimental class was 14.44. While the mean score in the control class was 14.58. Furthermore, the mean score of the post-test in the experimental class was 82.98. While the mean score post-test in the control class was 60.56. Based on the result, the experimental class students’ score on post-test were better in which the mean = 82.89 than their scores on pre-test the mean = 60.56 . in addition, the two-tailed value of p was 0.000 which was lower than 0.05 . in conclusion, the calculation of paired t-test showed that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of experimental group. The analysis of qualitative data show that used English song influence through students’ pronunciation by observing the teaching and learning process, test, questionnaire, and interviewing the students. The students were more confident and were not afraid of making mistakes when pronunciation.
