The family is an informal institution that has a strong influence on the child and on his or her academic performance in particular. Family influence is more essential in childhood, because at a young age children depend a lot on their parents. The nature of relationships between children and parents as well as the role of family in general can change as children grow up. This is a literature review of foreign empirical studies leading to further development of a research program of the influence of family factors on the performance of schoolchildren and students in Russia. In most of the cases, the authors focus on the performance of one group - either schoolchildren or students. This paper considers the research question of whether family factors, which have proven their impact on schoolchildren academic performance, retain their impact on the performance of university students. The novelty of the review lies in its consideration of three ways in which the family impacts on student’s performance: the socio-economic status of the family, the social capital of the family, and the parental involvement in the educational process. The first two ways have been extensively studied in the research, while parental involvement is often considered as a significant factor in school performance. However, it is underestimated as factor in a university student’s performance. The review confirmed that family factors have a significant positive impact on academic performance for both schoolchildren and students. This influence depends on the nature of the relationship between parents and children and can change over time. The results are of practical interest for the researchers in the field of education and psychology, educational institutions as well as for parents. The empirical analysis of parental involvement influence on the academic performance of university students may be one of the possible research themes.

The preconceived notion concerning negative effects of video games and students' academic performance is a widely known subject. However, some investigations explore the positive impact of video games on academic performance. With a sample of 247 university students, this chapter studies the perception of both gamers and non-gamers about soft skills and their current relevance in academic and professional fields. The possible relationships linking the intensity of the usage of video games, academic performance, and the perception concerning soft skills are investigated. The results expose a generalized positive perception respecting the relation between video games and the development of soft skills, specifically to the video game genre and its relevance and influence on academic performance, as well as gender differences, where women prevail in emotional and social managements, although this influence is not elevated.

The article considers the possibility of using non-traditional recreational facilities in the educational process with university students. The purpose of the study is to assess the impact of the developed methodology for fitball gymnastics and fitness yoga on the health level of students. To achieve the goal, the following tasks were set: theoretically substantiate the proposed methodology of classes; identify and conduct a comparative analysis of adaptive potential according to the method of R.M. Baevsky and the level of the functional state of first-year students during an experimental study. Scientific novelty lies in the expansion of theoretical and practical approaches to physical education at the university. The positive impact of the proposed teaching methods on the level of functional readiness of first-year students is substantiated and experimentally proved. To improve the methodology, a set of methods was used: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, the method of pedagogical research, pedagogical experiment, methods of mathematical statistics.

Researchers and educators raise the question of whether pupils' academic performance can be improved through parental involvement in academic activities. The main objective of the following study is to verify whether parental involvement in school activities and family socioeconomic status are associated with children's academic achievement. 150 Spanish seventh grade pupils completed intelligence tests, and their teachers assessed parents' involvement in the school and estimated parents' cultural levels. To measure academic achievement the pupil's overall grade was taken from the Pupils' Final Evaluation Registers. The education and professional level of the mother and father and home size were obtained from the Pupil Personal Register; these variables define the family socioeconomic status. The data, analyzed through application of structural equations, suggest that academic achievement is directly influenced by the cultural level of the family and the child's intelligence but is indirectly influenced by parental involvement in school activities and the socioeconomic status of the child's family.

The topicality of the article is substantiated by the significant demographic problems, which are the consequence of the transformation in traditional stereotypes of women’s reproductive behavior, the change in models of family relations, and the decline of the maternity value in the society. This determines the problem of forming readiness for motherhood in young women. The author points out that the problem of forming readiness for motherhood is not sufficiently developed from the pedagogical point of view, which contradicts to the historically established national traditions of educative teaching of motherhood in the family and in the education system. Special emphasis is placed on the reduction of readiness to become a mother among women who receive professional education and realize themselves in the profession. The potential of the educational process of the university in solving the problem of forming the readiness of female students for motherhood is indicated. The author’s understanding of the essence and structure of readiness for motherhood as a complex psychological and pedagogical phenomenon is proposed. A set of criteria and indicators of female students’ readiness for motherhood has been developed, taking into account its formation in the conditions of the university educational process. The selection of diagnostic methods is made, which allow identifying the formation of all aspects of the readiness of university students for motherhood. The studied phenomenon is characterized by the author at the high, sufficient, medium and low levels of its formation. The developed criteria and diagnostic base can be considered as the foundation for conducting the ascertaining stage of the pedagogical experiment, analysis of the reasons that negatively affect the unfinished level of formation of readiness for motherhood in female students, and determining the pedagogical conditions for the effective formation of the studied phenomenon in the educational process of the university. Keywords: motherhood, readiness for motherhood, educational training, educational process of the university, criteria and diagnostic basis for the study of the university students’ readiness for motherhood
