Modern educational process is getting more and more interactive which presupposes the employment of brand new textbooks and the most difficult to be written are manuals for studying foreign languages. Over the past decades interest in learning languages in Russia might be justified by globalization (the consequence of which is the phenomenon of interactivity) that results in developing new demands to foreign language textbooks among which the primary ones are to be communicative, situational, problemsolving, and (relatively) easy to obtain the form and content of a foreign language. More complex demands to a manual in general and to a foreign language textbook in particular consider it to be the product of conceptual system, the method of achieving educational goals, and the control lever of managing the learning process. Meanwhile, as the monitoring of the modern instructional materials demonstrates there is an obvious deficit of foreign language textbooks and manuals that could completely satisfy the demands declared and – which is even more important – could stimulate the development of the meaningful attitude to the study of a foreign language. This gives us reason to consider the topic chosen for the paper to be an issue of concern and urgency. Without criticizing or questioning the authoritative opinions over the quality of the current foreign language textbooks the author makes an attempt to define the essence of a textbook, to revise the demands to it and to describe the potential challenges of its writing.

The article considers the issue of design thinking developing methods in foreign language classes. The study materials are presented by educational and methodological courses for teaching foreign languages, methodical developments for professionally oriented teaching, checklists of students’ educational and scientific activity, the final rating of the educational process of the academic groups participating in the experiment. The methods of observation, questioning and interviewing were used. The experimental results were statistically processed. The authors differentiate between the concepts of "design thinking" and "creative thinking" which are often confused. In this case design thinking is viewed as a higher level of thought process. It was found that the most effective basis for developing students' design thinking skills is the OIW (organized independent work), in particular, project activities. The effectiveness of the methodology for the formation and development of students’ design thinking competence core has been proven experimentally in 2018-2020 academic semesters in the process of full-time and remote working modeat at the Foreign Languages and Humanities Department of the Kamyshin Technological Institute (branch) of the Volgograd State Technical University. The conducted study showed that students participation in the experiment significantly influenced their outlook, quality of intellectual modeling, research activities, subject communication both in their native and foreign languages.

The process of learning grammar is quite time-consuming. Poor grammar is often the reason that prevents people from communicating freely and competently in a foreign language. Definitely, some textbooks offer a sufficient number of grammar exercises, but, as a rule, these exercises are not aimed at communication. Therefore, it is quite natural that at the beginning of the formation of grammar skills, students do not have sufficient linguistic competence and psychological readiness for full-fledged foreign language communication. Consequently, the task of teachers is to create such conditions in the educational process where students are involved in communication step by step, with a gradual increase in psychological stress and linguistic load, at the same time including grammar tasks in the learning process. Thus, the relevance of this article is determined by the increased requirements for the quality of teaching a foreign language with a view to earlier communication and the undeveloped issues related to the problem of developing and improving grammatical skills.

The goal of this article consists in assessment of possibilities of using board games in the process of learning foreign languages. The object of this research is gamification in learning foreign languages, the subject is the educational potential of board games in teaching foreign languages to adolescents and adults. The relevance of this work lies in finding the new forms of integration of educational process and practical activity. The author notes an important advantage of communication in foreign language during the game over other forms of educational communication in shifting the focus of students’ attention and perception of foreign language as an instrument for achieving the goals of the game, rather than an end in itself. Special attention is given to variability of implementation of each game and ways of adapting to the educational goals, level of attainment, and allocated time. Based on the general scientific methods, such as literature searches, analysis and synthesis, classification, as well as empirical methods, such as experiment, observation and comparison, the  author provides methodological substantiation and review of the eight board games; seven of them are intended for learning any foreign language, not Spanish alone, which is taken as an example in this research. The article carries out classification of board games and gives comparative characteristic of the two types of games used in the educational process. The acquired results are of a practical nature and can be applied in teaching foreign languages on any level or stage of education. All methodologies were tested in learning Spanish language at the university in non-linguistic specialties, and demonstrated high effectiveness.

The article substantiates that in modern conditions the core didactic principle of higher education should be the transition from teaching to self-education, which is regarded by contemporary native researchers as the highest stage of education. Social trends in the world have, in their turn, actualized the need to revise the conceptual system of views on the theory and practice of language self-instruction. The result of expanding the range of research issues of training students for independent acquisition of foreign language knowledge, as a kind of alternative to institutional education, was the introduction into scientific circulation of new categories, concepts and terms. Along with theoretical developments, the practice of linguistic self-education is being actively improved. New and already known methods of independent mastering foreign languages are emerging. It is typical of foreign higher education that productive self-educational activities increasingly permeate all the basic elements of the educational process and become its defining feature. In particular, special courses on linguistic autodidactics are introduced in higher educational establishments, the so-called “independent study” becomes widespread, students develop their own individual curriculum, which is carried out through the student’s free organization of his/her educational process and so on. Thus, a new dimension in teaching foreign languages has been introduced into existing educational technologies, namely: “learning to learn”, which meets the recommendations of the Council of Europe. Up to date the fundamental scientific and theoretical base, which covers important aspects of theory and practice of foreign language self-education, has been formed in native pedagogical science. Contemporary researchers recognize the training of future professionals for lifelong learning as one of the main factors of implementing the latest paradigm of higher education. With that self-education in the field of foreign languages is considered as the basic factor of forming the secondary language personality. It is particularly important to work out methodological support and appropriate technologies of “learning to learn”, aimed at equipping students with necessary skills of foreign language self-education. Researchers also comprehensively study the peculiarities of the organization and modern methods of autonomous mastering foreign languages.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to suggest a framework that creates a common language to enhance the connection between the domains of cultural heritage (CH) artifacts and instruction.Design/methodology/approachThe CH and instruction domains are logically deconstructed into dimensions of functions, semiotics, CH, teaching/instructional materials, agents and outcomes. The elements within those dimensions can be concatenated to create natural-English sentences that describe aspects of the problem domain.FindingsThe framework is valid using traditional social sciences content, semantic, practical and systemic validity constructs.Research limitations/implicationsThe framework can be used to map current research literature to discover areas of heavy, light and no research.Originality/valueThe framework provides a new way for CH and education stakeholders to describe and visualize the problem domain, which could allow for significant enhancements of each. Better understanding the problem domain would serve to enhance instruction informed from collections and vice versa. The educational process would have more depth due to better access to primary sources. Increased use of collections would reveal more ways through which they could be used in instruction. The framework can help visualize the past and present of the domain, and envisage its future.
