With the rapid growth of the Internet in the 1990ies due to the WWW, many people’s hopes were raised that the spirit of egality, the emancipatory power of the medium then, would be brought to the masses. With the increasing commercialization, the net became and is becoming more and more a one-way medium for advertising. Against this development, a new form of web pages has emerged and is becoming increasingly popular: the Wiki. Its distinctive feature is that any web page can be edited by anyone. Participants attribute the success to this openness and to the resulting collective production of content. In his 1970 article “Constituents of a theory of the media”, Enzensberger developed a list of seven criteria that qualify, in his opinion, the use of a medium as emancipatory. These are used to investigate the question: Can wikis be thought of as a new form of emancipatory use of the medium?

In this paper we are presenting a simple simulation of the Internet World-Wide Web, where one observes the appearance of web pages belonging to different web sites, covering a number of different thematic topics and possessing links to other web pages. The goal of our simulation is to reproduce the form of the observed World-Wide Web and of its growth, using a small number of simple assumptions. In our simulation, existing web pages may generate new ones as follows: First, each web page is equipped with a topic concerning its contents. Second, links between web pages are established according to common topics. Next, new web pages may be randomly generated and subsequently they might be equipped with a topic and be assigned to web sites. By repeated iterations of these rules, our simulation appears to exhibit the observed structure of the World-Wide Web and, in particular, a power law type of growth. In order to visualise the network of web pages, we have followed N. Gilbert's (1997) methodology of scientometric simulation, assuming that web pages can be represented by points in the plane. Furthermore, the simulated graph is found to possess the property of small worlds, as it is the case with a large number of other complex networks.

Web authoring is the process of developing Web pages. The Web development process requires you to use software to create functional pages that will work on the Internet. Adding Web functionality is creating specific components within a Web page that do something. Adding links, rollover graphics, and interactive multimedia items to a Web page creates are examples of enhanced functionality. This chapter demonstrates Web based authoring techniques using Macromedia Dreamweaver. The focus is on adding Web functions to pages generated from Macromedia Fireworks and to overview creating Web pages from scratch using Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver and Fireworks are professional Web applications. Using professional Web software will benefit you tremendously. There are other ways to create Web pages using applications not specifically made to create Web pages. These applications include Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint. The use of Microsoft applications for Web page development is not covered in this chapter. However, I do provide steps on how to use these applications for Web page authoring within the appendix of this text. If you feel that you are more comfortable using the Microsoft applications or the Macromedia applications simply aren’t available to you yet, follow the same process for Web page conceptualization and content creation and use the programs available to you. You should try to get Web page development skills using Macromedia Dreamweaver because it helps you expand your software skills outside of basic office applications. The ability to create a Web page using professional Web development software is important to building a high-end computer skills set. The main objectives of this chapter are to get you involved in some technical processes that you’ll need to create the Web portfolio. Focus will be on guiding you through opening your sliced pages, adding links, using tables, creating pop up windows for content and using layers and timelines for dynamic HTML. The coverage will not try to provide a complete tutorial set for Macromedia Dreamweaver, but will highlight essential techniques. Along the way you will get pieces of hand coded action scripts and JavaScripts. You can decide which pieces you want to use in your own Web portfolio pages. The techniques provided are a concentrated workflow for creating Web pages. Let us begin to explore Web page authoring.

The growth of the Internet during the last decade has resulted in much scholarly attention. Supporters of the optimistic mobilization-theory argue that cyber politics and cyber discussions are comparable and sometimes even superior to traditional politics. Moreover this new form of politics has the potential of mobilizing new citizens into the realm of politics. Critics, however, argue from a reinforcement perspective that the effects of cyber politics are utterly limited. Even in a utopia with the digital divide in Internet access abolished, reinforcement proponents argue that politics on the internet still only appeals to the politically "converted" citizens. In this study I focus on six Finnish electronic discussion boards. The main question asked is whether these electronic debates display traits of either the mobilization or the reinforcement theory. Is cyber politics mobilizing the masses or do the discussions resemble social clubs for the motivated?

Abstract A rapid growth of online advertisements results in unsolicited bulk of data being downloaded during web surfing. To tackle this problem a fast mechanism detecting adverts is required. In this paper we present the usefulness of URL based web-pages classification in the process of online advertisements detection. Our experiments are performed on seven popular classifiers using the real-life dataset obtained by human agents browsing the internet. We introduce a general and fully automated framework that allows us to do a comprehensive analysis by performing simultaneously hundreds of experiments. This study results in solution with 0.987 accuracy and 0.822 F-measure.

Electronic commerce (e-Commerce) has exploded on the Internet over the past few years and is expected to continue growing at an exponential rate (Kannan, Chang and Whinston, 1998; Fellenstein and Wood, 2000). According to the GVU’s 8th WWW User Surveys (1997), the most important issues facing online users are privacy (31%), censorship (24%) and navigation (17%). Since user interface design directly impacts navigation and affects the user’s interaction with a Web site, this chapter will explore a number of different factors that affect user interface design on the World Wide Web. In all there are six factors that we explore in this chapter. They are the user’s mental model as newly defined and focused upon perception and conception (Haynes and Mahfouz, 2001), the level of expertise of the user, the user’s learning style, the richness of the media used, the organizational image and message, and the user’s intentions. All these factors involve internal (to the Web page design) and external (to the user’s environment) implications that impact user interface design on the Internet. Since all factors are external with the exception of the richness of the media used and, to some extent, the organizational image and message, it follows that we have chosen to emphasize in this chapter the external factors, namely those factors that directly relate to the user.

Organisations increasingly use the internet and web to communicate with the marketplace. Indeed, the hotel industry seems particularly suited to the use of these technologies. Many sites are not accessible to large segments of the disabled community, however, or to individuals using particular hard and softwares. Identifying the competitive and legal mandates for website accessibility, the study looks at the accessibility of UK-based hotel websites. Utilising the accessibility software, Bobby, as well as making some additional manual accessibility checks, the study finds disappointingly low levels of website accessibility. If organisations want to make more effective use of the web then they need to ensure that their web pages are designed from the outside-in — from the user's perspective.

Abstract The rapid growth of the numbers of unaffiliated voters and the internet users caused politicians’ interest in these audiences and the start of their activities in these communication channels by establishing more personalized relationships with voters. This paper aims to analyze the communication of main parties and their candidates in social media channel “Facebook” and in popular Lithuanian internet news media portals, such as delfi.lt, lrytas.lt and others before the Parliamentary elections in 2012 and the forthcoming 2016 Parliamentary elections. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects of campaign coverage in the media portals and Facebook are analysed. The paper addresses the following questions: How important are factors such as new party emergence, parallel referendum campaign, and activity of using social media for the final result of elections? How active were the politicians in the Facebook? What content dominated their profiles? How much personalized were their messages? What strategies were used for communication? Did the politicians aim at mobilizing or at persuasion the voters? Involvement of citizens, voters’ turnout and political results are linked with campaign arguments and the value normative environment. We conclude by providing the discussion on the noticed tendencies and possible improvements in the communication of candidates for the future.

ObjectiveWith continuing use of the Internet, rheumatologists are referring patients to various websites to gain information about medications and diseases. Our goal was to develop and evaluate a Medication Website Assessment Tool (MWAT) for use by health professionals, and to explore the overall quality of methotrexate information presented on common English-language websites.MethodsIdentification of websites was performed using a search strategy on the search engine Google. The first 250 hits were screened. Inclusion criteria included those English-language websites from authoritative sources, trusted medical, physicians’, and common health-related websites. Websites from pharmaceutical companies, online pharmacies, and where the purpose seemed to be primarily advertisements were also included. Product monographs or technical-based web pages and web pages where the information was clearly directed at patients with cancer were excluded. Two reviewers independently scored each included web page for completeness and accuracy, format, readability, reliability, and credibility. An overall ranking was provided for each methotrexate information page.ResultsTwenty-eight web pages were included in the analysis. The average score for completeness and accuracy was 15.48 ± 3.70 (maximum 24) with 10 out of 28 pages scoring 18 (75%) or higher. The average format score was 6.00 ± 1.46 (maximum 8). The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level revealed an average grade level of 10.07 ± 1.84, with 5 out of 28 websites written at a reading level less than grade 8; however, no web page scored at a grade 5 to 6 level. An overall ranking was calculated identifying 8 web pages as appropriate sources of accurate and reliable methotrexate information.ConclusionWith the enormous amount of information available on the Internet, it is important to direct patients to web pages that are complete, accurate, readable, and credible sources of information. We identified web pages that may serve the interests of both rheumatologists and patients.

In recent years, with the development of the internet, there has been an increase in interest in the internet thanks to other technological developments. In the face of increased user demand, hotel webpages have to maintain high quality of service for a sustainable success. The authors present the Pythagorean fuzzy TOPSIS method to evaluate the hotel webpages. In this study, the most suitable hotel web page has been selected among the five hotel web page alternatives based on 13 criteria according to three experts' opinions. In contrast to precise numbers in TOPSIS method, the merit of fuzzy TOPSIS method is to handle the fuzzy numbers to evaluate the alternatives. Experts cannot express certain evaluations explicitly when using precise values during making decisions. However, the use of linguistic variables provides great success in decision making under uncertain environments. Pythagorean fuzzy number is used to define the weights of the criteria according to three experts' opinions. Five alternative hotel web pages are ranked by using Pythagorean fuzzy number.
