Rutting is considered as the most generated distress in Iraqi roads as a result of the high temperature and excessive traffic load. So, it is essential to utilize polymer modified binder to increase the performance of pavements. The objective of this paper is to assess the effect of aggregate gradation and filler content on the rutting formation of Colored Hot Mix Asphalt CHMA. The HMA was colored by using iron oxide as filler to produce red HMA. Two blends were used: fine and coarse with two different types of filler iron oxide for CHMA and limestone for conventional HMA with two filler content 6% and 10%. Neat (AC 40-50) and modified asphalt (AC 40-50 + 4%SBS) were used. Tests are held on adding 4% Styrene Butadiene Styrene )SBS( by the weight of neat asphalt (AC 40-50) to raise the performance grade by two grades from PG (64-16) to PG (76-16) [1] and [2]. The wheel tracking test is used to assess the rut depth of the CHMA. The test results showed that the using iron oxide with neat asphalt increase the rut depth resistance by 200 and 400 failure load cycles than mixtures using limestone (cycles that mix reach 25 mm rut depth) for fine and coarse mix respectively. Also, the effect of gradation shows that the fine mixture fails at 4000 cycles while the coarse mixture fails at 1800 cycles for 6% limestone mixtures.  Increasing the iron oxide content from 6% to 10% leads to increase the failure load cycles by 2200 and 1200 cycles for fine and coarse mixture respectively using modified asphalt. The fine mixture with 10% iron oxide using modified asphalt gives the best performance with 7000 cycles than the coarse mixture with 10% filler content and modified asphalt with 4000 cycles. irrespective the filler and type of binder, the dense mixtures using iron oxide as filler exhibit better resistance to rutting formation than coarse mixtures.

Reflective cracking is a common issue with respect to rehabilitated asphalt pavements, especially when the rehabilitation is done by applying a hot-mix asphalt overlay on the existing damaged pavement. Several approaches can be adopted to delay reflective cracking. They include an increase of the overlay thickness and the use of a stress relief asphalt mixture (SRAM), which is a fine-graded, flexible, and thin asphalt interlayer. Because the efficiency of a SRAM is highly related to the properties of the asphalt binder used in the mixture, it is of interest to use a highly modified asphalt (HiMA) binder. This paper describes a field test comprising three sections at BR-116 (a heavily trafficked highway in Brazil). One of the rehabilitation strategies used for a cracked asphalt pavement was a 2.5-cm SRAM (produced with a HiMA binder) and 5-cm styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) hot-mix asphalt (HMA). The other two strategies were to apply SBS HMA overlays of different thicknesses (7.5 cm and 10.5 cm). The aim was to evaluate and compare the capability of these solutions to control reflective cracking. Rheological properties and multiple stress creep and recovery tests were performed on the asphalt binders, and the semicircular bending test was performed on the asphalt mixtures. The surface conditions were monitored, and the results for each section were compared. After a 29-month period, the section that received the interlayer had the lowest cracked area and showed better resistance than the overlays did to reflective cracking and better maintenance of the original thickness of the pavement.

SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer) has been widely used in pavement industry as an asphalt modifier. Nanomaterials can further enhance the performance of SBS modified asphalt. However, rare studies investigate the feasibility of using graphene as a performance enhancer of SBS modified asphalt. To fill this gap, comprehensive experimental tests including chemical and mechanical test were carried out on SBS-graphene modified asphalt and SEBS (styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer, which is a hydrogenated polymer of SBS) modified asphalt. Graphene with different dimensions and contents was taken into consideration in this study. Based on the experimental work, it can be concluded that graphene improves the mid-temperature performance of SBS modified asphalt. Compared with two-dimensional graphene, three-dimensional graphene has a greater advantage and the enhancement effect increases with the increase of its dosage. In addition, the cross-linked structure of SBS-graphene composite improves the distribution of SBS in asphalt, which improves the overall performance of SBS modified asphalt.

  Asphalt Hot Mix (HMA) is mainly applied in highway construction in Iraq because of its economic advantage and easy maintenance. Various factors impact the performance of HMA in the field. It is one of the significant impacts on aggregate gradation. The Universal Specification for Roads and Bridges in Iraq (SCRB) limits the different types of asphalt layers and allows for designed tolerance aggregate gradation. It is quite hard for contractors in the present asphalt industries to achieve the required job mix because of sieves' control problems. This study focuses on the effects on the required specification performance of aggregate deviations by using original and modified asphalt binder with AC(40-50) and 4% SBS, respectively. A mid gradation of the base asphalt mixture was selected as a reference mix, and more than 24 deviated mixtures were then prepared. Typical Marshall routine studies on prepared compounds were performed to assess the properties of the mixture. Bailey's theory (CA, Fac ratios) was also employed for understanding the impact of these deviations on the arrangement of particles and blending performance. Results show that the mixture performance is not affected greatly by minor aggregate deviations. However, a significant deviation in coarse aggregates leads to a decrease in Marshall properties. Results showed that a good tool for understanding mixing performance is the Bailey performance assessment method. This paper aims to study the effects of using  4% Styrene Butadiene Styrene (SBS) and eliminating the effect of aggregate gradation deviations on the mixture performance.

Oil sands de-oiled asphalt (OSDOA) has become a bottleneck for refineries due to its enormous production and huge landfill costs. Applying OSDOA as a modifier is an effective way to reduce environmental pollution and disposal cost. In this study, the influences of OSDOA and polyphosphoric acid (PPA) compound modification on styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)-modified binder were investigated. The high-temperature rutting resistance, low-temperature anti-crack performance and fatigue resistance were obtained by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) test. Storage stability and microstructure were also investigated by storage test and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that the compound modification of OSDOA/PPA dramatically enhanced the deformation resistance of SBS-modified binder and reduced its low-temperature cracking resistance. The anti-fatigue performance was also decreased. Moreover, the combined effect of OSDOA and PPA could produce composite modified asphalt with excellent storage stability, which was verified by desirable fluorescence images. Furthermore, both physical and chemical interactions coexisted during the OSDOA/PPA compound modification process. Consequently, the optimal doses of OSDOA and PPA were determined to be 10 wt% and 1.0 wt%, considering of the balance between high- and low-temperature characteristics and storage stability of composite modified asphalt.

In order to solve the problems caused by asphalt diseases and prolong the life cycle of asphalt pavement, many studies on the properties of modified asphalt have been conducted, especially polyurethane (PU) modified asphalt. This study is to replace part of the styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modifier with waste polyurethane (WP), for preparing WP/SBS composite modified asphalt, as well as exploring its properties and microstructure. On this basis, this paper studied the basic performance of WP/SBS composite modified asphalt with a conventional performance test, to analyze the high- and low-temperature rheological properties, permanent deformation resistance and storage stability of WP/SBS composite modified asphalt by dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) and bending beam rheometer (BBR) tests. The microstructure of WP/SBS composite modified asphalt was also observed by fluorescence microscope (FM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), as well as the reaction between WP and asphalt. According to the results of this study, WP can replace SBS as a modifier to prepare WP/SBS composite modified asphalt with good low-temperature resistance, whose high-temperature performance will be lower than that of SBS modified asphalt. After comprehensive consideration, 4% SBS content and 15% WPU content (4 S/15 W) are determined as the suitable types of WPU/SBS composite modified asphalt.

Nanotechnology has contributed significantly to different subfields of the construction industry, including asphalt pavement engineering. The improved properties and new functionalities of the nanomaterials have provided different desired properties of asphalt. In this study, the effectiveness of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in resisting the oxidation of polymer-modified asphalt was measured. A total of three different percentages (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) of MWCNT were used to modify the Styrene-Butadiene (SB) and styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) modified asphalt (4% and 5%). The laboratory oxidized asphalt samples were evaluated by an atomic force microscopy machine. The oxidation of the polymer-MWCNT modified asphalt is measured by simulating the existing functional group of the asphalt and as a function of the adhesive force. It is observed that the use of MWCNT in SB and SBS can increase the resistance to oxidation.

To improve the thermal-aging stability and rheological performance of styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR)-modified asphalt, phenolic resin (PF) was introduced in the process of preparing SBR-modified asphalt by melt blending. The effect of PF and SBR on the high and low-temperature rheological performance of the asphalt binder before and after aging was evaluated by a temperature and frequency sweep using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and fluorescence microscopy (FM) were used to further investigate the effect of PF and SBR on the thermal stability and morphological characteristics of the asphalt binder. The results showed that the addition of PF can enhance the high-temperature deformation resistance and short-term aging resistance of SBR-modified asphalt. Moreover, PF and SBR form an embedded network structure within the asphalt binder and alleviate the deterioration of the polymer during the aging process. Compared with SBR-modified asphalt, the chemical system of composite-modified asphalt is more stable, and it can remain stable with an aging time of less than 5 h.

In this study, the compaction characteristics of recycled hot-mix asphalt (RHMA) were evaluated using the void content (VV), compaction energy index (CEI), slope of accumulated compaction energy (K), and lock point (LP). Then, the effects of the compaction parameters, including the gradation of the RHMA, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) content, temperature of gyrations, and number of gyrations, on the compaction characteristics of RHMA were investigated. An orthogonal experiment was designed and the data collected were analyzed via range analysis; then, a regression model was generated relying on a quadratic polynomial. Furthermore, the regression model was used for the comparison and prediction of the mixture’s compactability during the material design. Finally, the compaction mechanism of RHMA was discussed from the perspective of the void content of RAP particles. The results showed that a finer aggregate gradation, a higher gyration temperature, a greater number of gyrations, and a higher RAP content were effective for increasing the compactability of RHMA. The range analysis results suggest that the gradation of RHMA has the greatest influence on compactability, followed by the RAP content. The RAP aggregate cannot diffuse to a new mixture completely, so the remained RAP particle reduces the void content of RHMA. Therefore, a higher RAP content up to 50% can help RHMA to achieve the designed void content with higher efficiency.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedi-oxythiophene) (PEDOT) derivatives conducting polymers are known for their great electrochromic (EC) properties offering a reversible blue switch under an applied voltage. Characterizations of symmetrical EC devices, built on combinations of PEDOT thin films, deposited with a bar coater from commercial inks, and separated by a lithium-based ionic membrane, show highest performance for 800 nm thickness. Tuning of the color is further achieved by mixing the PEDOT film with oxides. Taking, in particular, the example of optically inactive iron oxide Fe2O3, a dark blue to reddish switch, of which intensity depends on the oxide content, is reported. Careful evaluation of the chromaticity parameters L*, a*, and b*, with oxidizing/reducing potentials, evidences a possible monitoring of the bluish tint.
