Lack of awareness in food label reading could be a problem of eating habit in Indonesian especially in youth. School-aged children are susceptible group to have risk from unsafe packaged snack food. Comic book would be one of good education media for them. Aim of the study was to raise awareness to food label reading and to make a good media to educate youth to read packaged food/snack label. This study was a research and development study (R and D study) with 4 D approach (define, design, develop, disseminate). After designing the media (including storyline and cover design) the media was rated by 2 media experts, tested in school-aged children, and also requested feedback from school teachers. Quantitative data were shown in percentage of feasibility, while qualitative data were analyzed by saturation  of data. The rating test from experts showed that overall comic feasibility was 87,86% (means feasible to use). The testing from users or school-aged children showed that overall comic feasibility was 96,41% (means feasible). The school teachers gave positive feedbacks on comic book. The conclusion of the study is that the comic book about food labelling with folklore character is feasible to use.

Purpose – Liberalization of trade, globalization and development in food science and technology has resulted in an increase in trade and consumption of pre-packaged foods. Reading food labelling information is important to assist in making informed choices of food. This study determined level of awareness on pre-packaged food labelling information among consumers in Anand city of Gujarat, India, their perception on the importance of such information and various factors influencing in reading and using food labels. Design/methodology/approach – A semi structured questionnaire was used to collect information from consumers who were found purchasing prepackaged foods in selected modern format retail stores. The obtained data were computed to determine relationships and associations between various factors and the use of food labelling information among consumers in the area of study. Findings – Study revealed that 86.7 per cent of the study participants reported to read labeling information prior purchase of pre-packaged foods. However, only a third of respondents were very much informed about food labelling and computed awareness scores. The objective of this study was to describe the content validation, through expert judgment, of a questionnaire for determining the level of knowledge that school teachers have of diabetes in order to design relevant educational interventions to improve the health of school-aged children. This psychometric study involved 15 experts who assessed each of the items in the instrument. The results revealed that the strength of agreement shown by the questionnaire ranged from substantial to almost perfect in its four dimensions, with the characteristics of “sufficiency” and “relevance” having the highest scores (0.982 and 0.903, respectively) based on the judgments made by the participating experts. Regarding statistical significance, the characteristics “sufficiency”, with p < 0.001, and “relevance”, with p = 0.001, were particularly relevant. The overall degree of understandability for the new version of the instrument was high (91.54%). The psychometric results obtained from validation of the “grado de conocimientos sobre diabetes en docentes del ámbito escolar” (Spanish for “level of knowledge of diabetes in school teachers”)—GCDDaE questionnaire through expert judgment and the pre-test indicate that it is recommended for use as it is both relevant and quick and easy to administer.

The purpose of this study was to determine consumers’ perceptions of industrially produced trans fats. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Regina at 3 different grocery store chains located in 3 different regions. A 21-item survey was administered in English by 3 research assistants at the grocery stores over a 5-day period. Of 498 potential respondents who were approached, 211 completed the survey, for a 42% response rate. The majority of respondents were female and over 61 years of age. When respondents were asked if they looked for information on food packages while grocery shopping, none of the respondents indicated that they looked for trans fat on the food label. Ninety-six percent of respondents identified that trans fat is found in processed foods, whereas 42% of respondents incorrectly identified trans fat as being found in nonhydrogenated margarines. More female respondents self-reported that they had made dietary changes to decrease trans fat intake as compared with male respondents (p < 0.05). Those participants who made dietary changes to decrease trans fat intake had higher mean knowledge scores than did those who did not make changes (p < 0.043). Sixty-three percent of respondents indicated that they would not make dietary changes to their snack food selections even if their selections contained trans fat. Consumers know a little about trans fats and consider them to be a concern. However, consumers are reluctant to make dietary changes to limit these fats in their snack food selections.

Two approaches to better educate elementary schoolteachers about children with diabetes were tested. One group of teachers was given a program consisting of a video, pamphlets, and a question- and-answer session. The second group was informed that these materials were available to them in the media center. A 22-point questionnaire was used before intervention and 8 to 10 weeks later. Although both groups showed significant improvement compared with the control group, the improvement was slight and not felt to be clinically satis factory. We conclude that mass education of elementary school teachers is ineffective and that other approaches need to be developed.

The learning media used by teachers are still relatively simple, such as student worksheets and student books published by the Ministry of Education and Culture and PowerPoint and learning videos that are already on YouTube. Not yet found a teacher who uses VideoScribe and PowerPoint-based multimedia. The majority of PowerPoints are only used as a media presentation with simple features. Learning with the media used by teachers is still not too exciting for students' attention. Students assume that the learning media used by teachers have nothing new that makes students interested in understanding the subject matter. The impact that occurs is the lack of interest, motivation, and enthusiasm of students in participating in learning; consequently, student learning achievement is still below the KKM. The solution to the problem offered is related to the existing problem is the implementation of training activities and mentoring the development of learning media based on Sparkol VideoScribe for Muhammadiyah 4 Yogyakarta Middle School teachers. The effectiveness of this training was measured by the effectiveness questionnaire and the number of teachers who can use VideoScribe.

The increase in relative level of education and the growing middle-class income earners in Nigeria have made packaged food items attractive to consumers. These foods provide handy, nutritious and convenient food for consumers; however, they also come with public health concerns.  From a policy perspective, food labelling can gauge consumers’ response to the safety conditions of packaged food. However, understanding consumers’ awareness and the use of food label information has attracted little research attention in many developing countries in sub-Saharan Africa. In this study, we investigate consumers’ awareness of the use of food safety labels in Lagos state, Nigeria. We used primary data collected using pretested structured questionnaire from 220 food shoppers who bought pre-packaged foods. A two-stage sampling technique was used to select the respondents. Consumers’ awareness and use of food safety information was revealed using descriptive statistics; Ordinal Regression Analysis was used to examine the socioeconomic factors determining the frequency of reading food safety labels. The study therefore recommends that there should be continuous awareness campaigns on the importance of food labels in ensuring safety and food producers should make sure their food labels are legible.
