Disasters can damage and cause harm from various aspects of life. Every individual can prevent disasters with disaster prevention measures. The actions taken are influenced by the perception of disaster. Perception is an element that supports citizen participation in disaster prevention efforts. The purpose of this study are to identify and analyze perceptions about disasters and citizen participation in disaster mitigation strategies. This study uses a quantitative approach with survey methods and is supported by qualitative data through in-depth interviews and observations. The number of samples chosen using incidental techniques amounted to 45 respondents. The selection of informants is done intentionally. The results showed that individual characteristics were not significantly related to the perception of disaster. Communities that perceive disasters well, make the community increasingly involved in disaster mitigation strategies but in carrying out personal responsibilities are less involved. Keywords: disaster, mitigation, participation, perception

This study aims to describe and analyze how the implementation and process of earthquake disaster mitigation at Universitas Andalas. This research was motivated by the high risk of earthquake disasters at Universitas Andalas and the still low education and understanding of students and academic aspirations of disaster mitigation. So it is necessary to optimize mitigation activities in the Universitas Andalas campus area. This is in accordance with Law Number 24 of 2007 concerning Disaster Management and the Tridarma of Higher Education which has a strategic role in disaster management, especially in relation to learning, research and community service. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, data collection techniques using interviews and documentation. To test the authenticity of the data obtained in the field, researchers used source triangulation techniques. The selection of informants was done by purposive sampling. As for the results of this study, in general, disaster mitigation activities in increasing awareness of the threat of an earthquake in Universitas Andalas have not run optimally. This is evidenced by the implementation of several activities that failed to achieve the target in the form of increased disaster alertness and increased understanding of students and academics on disaster mitigation, the absence of regulations containing the implementation of disaster mitigation activities at Universitas Andalas. Lack of involvement of external organizations in implementing disaster mitigation activities, as well as limited human resources and budget in implementing disaster mitigation activities. The results showed that the alternative policy was chosen based on the criteria for selecting the alternative policy: 1) Technical feasibility, it was found that the purpose of establishing KEK was as a forum for ecraf’s actors. 2) Economic and financial, KEK doesn’t receive any special funds and no goals have been achieved. 3) Political viability, this policy doesn’t contradicting with the applicable regulations. 4) Administrative Operability policy is realistic, but the support from the nine offices has not been maximal. 5) The criteria chosen are based on the success of the other regions and then it is adopted. It is the main criteria in the process of selecting and determining KEK as an alternative policy for the development of creative economy potentian in Banyumas Regency

Japan has one of the highest levels of seismicity in the world. In the last few decades, Japan has been the site of many destructive earthquakes, such as the 1995 Kobe earthquake, 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, 2004 Chuetsu earthquake, 2007 Chuetsu-oki earthquake, and 2016 Kumamoto earthquake/Tottori-chubu earthquakes. Furthermore, we need to take disaster mitigation countermeasures in preparation for the next Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake, Tokyo earthquake, etc. Disaster countermeasures against these earthquakes will be of vital importance to Japanese society in the future. As a specific example, if and when the next Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake strikes, it will cause widespread and compound disasters on the island of Shikoku and in southwestern Japan in general. The prefectures of Kagawa, Tokushima, Kochi, and Ehime are all on the island of Shikoku, yet the damages that a future Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake will cause are predicted to be quite different in each prefecture. Therefore, in preparing disaster mitigation strategies for the coming Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake, these four prefectures and the distinguished universities involved in disaster mitigation research and education in them must be united in collaboration while making the best use of the individual characteristics of the prefectures and universities. Specifically, in terms of disaster mitigation preparations, universities on Shikoku have to develop and advance resilience science as it relates to upcoming disasters from a Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake, inland earthquakes, typhoons, floods, etc. In this special issue, many significant research papers from the fields of engineering, geoscience, and the social sciences by researchers from distinguished universities on the island of Shikoku focus on resilience science. We must apply their findings to society, putting them into practice to mitigate potential damages from any future natural events.

AbstractAs a disaster prevention measure based on self-assistance and mutual assistance, disaster prevention maps are being created with citizen participation throughout Japan. The process of creating disaster prevention maps is itself a disaster prevention measure that contributes to raising awareness of disaster prevention by promoting exchange and cooperation within the region. By focusing on relations between road networks and hazardous elements, we developed a system to support disaster prevention map creation that visualizes roads at high risk during a disaster and facilitates the study of evacuation simulations. This system leads to a completed disaster prevention map in three phases. In the first phase, we use a device with GPS logging functions to collect information related to hazardous elements. In the second phase, we use Google Maps (“online map,” below) to visualize roads with high evacuation risk. In the final phase, we perform a regional evaluation through simulations of disaster-time evacuations. In experimental verifications, by conducting usability tests after creating a disaster prevention map in the target area, we evaluated the system in terms of simple operability and visibility. We found that by implementing this series of processes, even users lacking specialized knowledge regarding disaster prevention can intuitively discover evacuation routes while considering the relations between visualized road networks and hazardous elements. These results show that compared with disaster prevention maps having simple site notations using existing WebGIS systems, disaster prevention maps created by residents while inspecting the target area raise awareness of risks present in the immediate vicinity even in normal times and are an effective support system for prompt disaster prevention measures and evacuation drills.

Abstract Forests have ecological and sociological functions, including tourism development as well as disaster mitigation efforts. In the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic that hit Bali tourism, it is necessary to develop new types of tourism such as this forest bathing. This research intends to study the potential and opportunities of bamboo forests in the Batur Geopark area to be used as new types of tourism, which at the same time can also be used as a disaster mitigation. A case study method with qualitative data collection includes observation, in-depth interviews, and literature study. A mapping plan for the bamboo forest area is also carried out to support the facilities and infrastructure for forest bathing activities. Bamboo has been used for the restoration of areas affected by the fire at Geopark Batur. However, no one has specifically offered the concept of Forest Bathing. Introducing forest bathing as a new attraction to revive Bali tourism and at the same time to preserve the environment is possible and necessary. Furthermore, there is important to develop destination branding and marketing for the forest bathing attraction.
