This article seeks to identify critical success factors for the appropriate infusion of instructional technologies to advance open learning in higher education within developing settings. Describe here is a descriptive account of a two-year case study based on the author’s personal analysis of, and reflection on, factors that contributed to the infusion of instructional technologies to advance open learning at the University of Botswana. The first critical success factors identified in this article include: a clear vision, support of committed leadership, and dedicated personnel/ change agents to ensure successful project implementation. The second critical success factor identified was the need for all involved to fully appreciate and understand the systemic nature of the infusion of instructional technologies for open learning purposes, as well as garner the commitment of strategic partners working in related systems. Finally highlighted, are the requirements needed to address the complex nature of the infusion of instructional technologies into the University’s educational offerings. It is hoped that those involved in education in developing countries, and particularly those desirous of advancing open learning through the use of instructional technologies, will find this descriptive analysis useful. Indeed, those of us involved in implementing instructional technologies in developing nations are still in the initial stages of this exciting yet challenging endeavour.

Key terms: infusion, open learning, instructional technologies, critical success factors, developing settings, Botswana, LASO model

Purpose According to an emerging research trend, which seeks to apply the concept of intellectual capital (IC) to the field of entrepreneurship, the purpose of this paper is to test whether IC can affect the start-up expectations of aspiring entrepreneurs. Design/methodology/approach Binary logistic regression models, based on empirical data derived from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor website and referring to Italy over the years 2005-2010, are used to test the influence of IC (comprising human, structural and relational capital) on start-up expectations. Findings Binary logistic regression models reveal robust results. Human, structural and relational capitals affect start-up expectations in Italy. Only in 2010 did structural capital fail to do so. Research limitations/implications This study has three main limitations. The first concerns the need for further research to confirm the influence of IC on start-up expectations. The second concerns in-depth, more exhaustive analyses that cannot be carried out due to the use of second- hand data. The third deals with the reference only to Italy, over a limited time-span (2005-2010). Originality/value To the best knowledge of the author, this is one of the first empirical studies that investigate whether IC can affect start-up expectations. Results revealed by the regression models might steer other scholars’ interest toward this research path (linking IC and entrepreneurship) that has not yet been properly considered.

Because technology pushed product development projects are risky and failure rates are high, the success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. This paper provides a comparison of success factor weighting between hardware and software product development projects in the ICT industry improving existing success factor research. We analyze qualitatively interview data from nine intentionally selected start-up firms and identify which success factors were clearly supported by HW and SW firms, and in which area different types of firms could benchmark each other. The practical aim of this paper is that it helps management to recognize the real actions needed to reduce product development risks in HW and SW projects.

Binary logistic regression is used for probability modeling or to predict binary response variables (Success / Failure) from one or more explanatory variables that are continuous or categorical. In carrying out this analysis, there are several ways to test the suitability of the resulting model, and one of them is the area under the ROC curve. The application of the analysis method in this study is the determinant of the elderly population to work. The population of the elderly in Indonesia is increasing every year. Many views that the elderly depend on other residents, especially in terms of the economy. However, if seen from the percentage of elderly working in Indonesia, it is increasing, including the elderly in KTI. The purpose of this study is to determine the characteristics of the elderly in KTI, know the factors that influence the decision of the elderly population to work in KTI and find out the tendency of variables that affect the decision of the elderly to work in KTI. The data used are raw data from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) was Survei Sosial Ekonomi Nasional (Susenas) Kor March 2018. This study using descriptive analysis methods and binary logistic regression. The results are that the variables that significantly influence the decisions of the elderly to work are residence, gender, age, education, family status, marital status, health complaints, and health insurance. Elderly who has characteristics residing in rural, male sex, classified as young elderly (60-69 years old), has the highest level of elementary school education, has the status of KRT in his family, is married, has no complaints health, and not having health insurance will have a greater tendency to decide to work.

This study investigates the challenges and identifies the critical success factors in transforming traditional hawker food into a franchisable business, principally within the context of Malaysia. This study aims to provide guidelines that could support the process of enterprising traditional street food businesses, especially to assist the mobilization and promotion of hawkerpreneurship for existing traditional food hawkers and future adopters. A total of five hawkerpreneurs and four traditional hawkers were qualitatively assessed through semi-structured interviews. As a result, four critical challenges that both hawkerpreneurs and traditional hawkers encountered were identified, namely: (1) exploring the unknown (2) high capital investment for total ‘make-over’ (3) lack of knowledge in brand repositioning and (4) resistance to automation and standardization, particularly as a way to retain authenticity. By considering these concerns, young entrepreneurs and financial investors can assess the potentiality and feasibility of hawker food, and identify areas to focus on in running a successful traditional street food business. The results of this study could further assist in developing the support mechanisms and start-up strategies that encourage the adoption of hawker food entrepreneurship among Malaysians.
