AN experiment trial was carried out during 2017 and 2018 seasons on Wonderful pomegranate trees about 7 years old grown in sandy soil under drip irrigation system from well at private orchard located on Cairo-Alexandria desert road (about 50 km from Cairo), Egypt. Treatments of salicylic acid (50,100 and 150 ppm), ascorbic acid (500, 750 and 1000 ppm) and tap water control were foliar sprayed twice a year i.e. at full bloom and four weeks later. Abstractly, salicylic and ascorbic acid treatments enhanced leaf characteristics, yield and fruit quality traits as well as minimized sunburned and cracked fruit percentages. Ascorbic acid treatment at 1000 ppm proved to be most efficient treatment in this respect.

As a soil amendment, biochar can significantly improve soil quality and crop growth. Few studies, however, have explored biochar effects on crop quality. This study investigated the amendment effects of bamboo biochar pyrolyzed at different temperatures on plant growth and fruit quality of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Tomato ‘Micro-Tom’ plants were grown in a sand medium amended with 0, 1, and 3% of biochars produced at 300 °C, 450 °C, and 600 °C, respectively. Plant growth was monitored, and fruit harvested at the red stage was analyzed for color, texture, soluble solids content, sugars, ascorbic acid, and acidity. Results showed that biochars produced at 300 °C and amended at 3% or pyrolyzed at 450 °C and amended at 1% increased plant growth index. Contents of glucose, fructose, soluble solids, ascorbic acid, and sugar-to-acid ratios of fruits produced from the two treatments were significantly higher than the other treatments. The improved plant growth and fruit quality were related to the higher concentrations of NO3, P, Ca, and Mg in the growing media. Our results suggest that optimizing biochar use can be achieved by targeting biochar production conditions and application rate, which resulted in desirable amendment and fruit quality effects.

The chemical composition of strawberry fruit depends mainly on cultivar, fruit maturity degree and climatic conditions in the growing period. Fruit quality is also determined by a cultivation technology. The influence of two biostimulants (Atonik SL and Betokson Super 050 SL), which were used separately, in combination with each other or with the liquid fertilizer InsolCa, on yielding and fruit quality of two strawberry cultivars: ‘Senga Sengana’ and ‘Kent’, was tested. Betokson Super 050 SL + InsolCa tended to improve the yield of both cultivars. Significant differences compared to the control were evident especially in 2001. Fruits of ‘Senga Sengana’ started ripening later and had more ascorbic acid, anthocyanins and acidity than ‘Kent’. The use of Betokson Super 050 SL + InsolCa improved the content of ascorbic acid, anthocyanins and sugar as well as acidity in strawberries of both cultivars. The use of Betokson Super 050 SL + Atonik SL significantly increased the content of ascorbic acid and sugar in fruits of both cultivars. ‘Kent’ strawberries also responded to the treatment with an increase in anthocyanin content and acidity.

The effect of fertigation with N-NO3 at 3, 6, or 12 mmol·liter-1, and 0, 3, or 6 dS·m-1 chloride ions on fruit quality of three pepino dulce selections was studied. Genotypes varied considerably in their response to mineral treatments in most quality characteristics. Variation in fruit size was greatly reduced when clusters were thinned to three fruit. Increasing chloride concentration in the nutrient soltuion reduced fruit size significantly and ascorbic acid concentration relative to the control, but fruit shape was not affected. Increases in NaCl salt, but not N concentration, resulted in significantly higher soluble solids concentration (SSC) and firmness in all three genotypes. Electrical conductivity, acidity, and pH were significantly affected by the two mineral treatments in the first trial, but remained unchanged in the second season. Fruit firmness, SSC, and acidity declined by 12% to 30%, whereas ascorbic acid content increased during 14 days storage at room temperature. These changes depended on genotype and environment during fruit growth and development. Organoleptic ratings were highest in salt-treated plants. Fruit quality of pepino dulce may be manipulated by crop management, thus improving its acceptability in Western markets.

Fruit quality of strawberry guava, yellow strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) and red strawberry guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine var. luidium) was investigated. Fruit weight of yellow strawberry guava ranged from 7.9 to 39.2 g, and that of red strawberry guava ranged from 3.6 to 15.9 g. Yellow strawberry guava was round, and red strawberry guava was ovoid, in fruit shape. strawberry guava fruit had many hard seeds. Yellow and red strawberry guava contained 16 to 137 and 5 to 33 seeds per fruit. Seed of red strawberry guava was bigger than that of yellow strawberry guava. Sucrose, glucose, and fructose were contained in strawberry guava fruit. Sucrose, glucose, and fructose contents of yellow strawberry guava fruit were 6.69%, 3.61%, and 6.27%, respectively. Those of red strawberry guava fruit were 9.52%, 2.09%, and 3.39%, respectively. Strawberry guava fruit contained about 1% of titratable acidity. Total ascorbic and dehydro-ascorbic acid contents of yellow strawberry guava fruit were 57.9 mg/100ml and 41.6 mg/100ml, respectively. Those of red strawberry guava were 81.4 mg/100ml and 74.4 mg/100ml, respectively. Fruit quality of strawberry guava was suitable to eat freshly.

The objective of this study was to determine influence of different soil type on apple yield and quality. To investigate the variation in fruit quality, apples were harvested at commercial maturity on two different soil type. The investigations was conducted in experimental apple orchards located in Focsani region on two different soil type: luvic  brown typical and  luvic brown pseudogleizate. Fruits of Jonathan and Golden Delicios cultivars were tested for color, soluble solids content, total acidity, ascorbic acid, anthocyanins content and chlorophyls content with specific analytrical methods. At harvest yield, dry matter, soluble solids content, ascorbic acid and acidity were affected by soil type. In this study, no significant soil effect was found on color, anthocyanins and chlorophyll fruit content. The results obtained in this study suggest that luvic brown pseudogleizate soil leading to increased yields and enhanced fruit quality.

The glucose, fructose, sucrose, and organic acids in the pulp of “Jinhuang” mango were analyzed using the HPLC method and the effect of bagging on fruit quality was researched during the postharvest storage. The results showed that there was a certain difference in the content of sugar and acid among the three treatments. The effect of bagging treatments on fructose, glucose, and sucrose in the fruit of “Jinhuang” mango was mainly reflected in sucrose. The treatments of white bagging (WB) and black bagging (BB) delayed the production of sucrose and the decomposition of citric acid, and increased the content of ascorbic acid and quinine. Based on sugar-acid ratio, the flavor of the three treatments was evaluated as: CK> WB> BB. The fruit quality of “Jinhuang” mango was affected by bagging treatments to a certain extent.

The present study was carried out during the seasons of 2014 and 2015 at the Research and Agricultural Experimental Station, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, to investigate the effects of foliar application of CaCl2 at 1 or 2%, Ca(NO3)2 at 0.5 or 1% and ascorbic acid at 50 or 100 ppm on yield and fruit quality of Ziziphus jujuba trees. All treatments were repeated twice (December 15 and January 15) before harvest date in both seasons. Treatments significantly improved yield and fruit physical characteristics (fruit weight, flesh weight, fruit volume, fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit firmness) in comparison to untreated control in both seasons. Fruit chemical characteristics (TSS, Acidity, total sugar contents, ascorbic acid, and total chlorophyll) were mostly improved by most tested treatments in both seasons over the control (water only). It can be concluded that foliar application with Ca(NO3)2 at 1% would be the best treatment to obtain highest yield, fruit physical and chemical composition of Z. jujuba.
