Utilizing Group Investigation Techniques to Enhance Students’ Reading Comprehension Skills on Recount Text

Recount text is one of the texts in writing which must be taught and stated in Junior High School curriculum. Some students felt that reading text is boring because the students tend to be very lazy to read the text, so that they are not interested in English lessons. The researchers used group investigation technique as one of alternatives in teaching and learning to develop the material and make students more active and interested in class. The objective of this research is to find out whether teaching using group investigation technique is able to develop the students’ reading in recount text at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 17 Kota Serang. The methodology of this research was a quantitative research method by using true experimental design. The study was carried out into two classes, Class VIII E as experimental class, and Class VIII C as control class. The results of the study showed that group investigation was able to develop students’ reading comprehension in recount text. Mean of posttest score of the experimental class (67.31) was higher than the control class (64.18). Based on the statistical analysis using t-test analysis, it showed the value of tcount ≥ ttable = 49.12 ≥ 1.99. It means that (Ha) was accepted and the (H0) was rejected. It can be concluded that group investigation is able to develop students’ reading comprehension in recount text at eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 17 Kota Serang.

<p>Mastering reading comprehension is a must for language learners. Without mastering reading comprehension students aren’t able to grasp the message on their written form of learning material. Yet, reading comprehension oftenly considered to be difficult by students. This may caused by teacher’s method of teaching that doesn’t effective. This article compare between the use of Cooperative Learning method model Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT) and Direct Instructional Method (DI) to teach studentsz reading comprehension. Here describe there is significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between the students taught using TGT and those taught using DI of the eighth grade students of one state junior high school in Grogol, and whether TGT is more effective than DI to teach reading comprehension. The method used in this study is experimental method (comparative study). The population of the research is all the eighth grade students. The sample was taken by using cluster random sampling. Two groups of student were taken, VIII-B as experimental group and VIII-C as control group. The instrument to collect data is test. The data were analyzed using t-test formula. The computation showed that t-observation (t<sub>o</sub>) is 3.32 consulting t-table <sub>(78,</sub> <sub>0.05)</sub> = 1.96, therefore the t<sub>o</sub> is higher than t<sub>t</sub>. It is concluded that there’s significant difference between experimental and control group. Besides, the mean of the group of students taught using TGT is 62.62, while that of those taught using DI is 59.46, meaning that TGT gives better achievement than DI. Thus, TGT is more effective than DI to teach reading comprehension.</p>

This study aims to improve the speaking skill of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Banawa in the use of audio visual aids. This research was conducted through action research consisting of two cycles. The data were obtained from observation during the implementation of the action; interview with Teacher of English and the eighth grade students from class VIII A; and discussion with Teacher of English. Data in the form of field notes, interview transcripts, and photographs. The validity of the data is obtained by applying utilization Audio Visual Aids, results and processes. The results show that there was an increase in students' speaking skills through the use of audio visual aids. The audio-visual tool used in this study was video and slide. Videos were taken from youtube.com in the form of dialogue in certain expressions. These videos can attract students' attention and increase their learning motivation. Students can have a better understanding of the use of English in real situations when they learn appropriate Englishlanguage models through audio-visual aids (video and slide). Students make improvements in several aspects of speaking skills, such as fluency and comprehensibility. They are more confident in speaking English. They actively participate during the teaching and learning process. In addition, they did not hesitate to ask the teacher when they found difficulties. The research findings are also supported by the results of students' speaking achievement which increased from 57.78 in cycle I to 72.67 in cycle II.

The objectives in these studies are (1) determine the activity of theeighth grade students of SMP 2 Labuan Deli in learning activities using an experimental method of inquiry. (2) Determine the increased student’s activityin class VIII of SMP Negeri 2 Labuan Deli in solving physics problems after applied the experimental method. This study is a classroom action research. Research subject is class VIII SMP 2 Semester 2 Labuan Deli T.P 2012/2013numbered 31 students consisting of 13 men and 18 women. Object of thisresearch is to apply the learning peruses STAD cooperative learning modelthrough experimental methods. This result show (1) There is an increase instudent learning outcomes Junior High School eighth grade 2 Labuan Deli isshown from: (a) the results of tests of student learning in the first cycle,namely: mean = 58.92 with the percentage of completeness = 19.36%; (b)tests of student learning outcomes in the second cycle is the average 75.70,percentage of completeness = 58.92%. Completeness percentage increased by61.24% and 0.41 normalized gain index or criteria being. (2) There is anincrease in the activity of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 LabuanDeli is shown from the first cycle only average 65.60 and 81.65 in the secondcycle. The results of this study can be used as input for teachers in an effort toincrease the activity and student learning outcomes by applying experimentalmethods.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study is to describe the following matters. First, it describes the reading skills of students in class VIII of SMP Negeri 8 Padang. Second, describe the news writing skills of VIII students of SMP Negeri 8 Padang. Third, it describes the correlation between reading comprehension skills and news writing skills of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padang. This type of research is quantitative research with descriptive methods. The results of this study are three. First, reading comprehension skills of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padang are in good qualifications. This was concluded based on an average count of 81.13. Second, the writing skills of news texts for eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padang are in good qualifications. This can be seen from the acquisition of the average news text writing test count of 81.25. Third, there is a significant correlation between reading comprehension skills and news writing skills of VIII grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padang at n-1 degrees of freedom and a significant level of 95%.  The null hypothesis is rejected and the work hypothesis is accepted because the test result prove the t value is greater than t table 3.81 > 1.68. Based on the result of the study above, it was concluded about the knowledge of reading skills in reading news texts of eight grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Padang.Kata Kunci: korelasi, membaca pemahaman, menulis teks berita

The objectives of this research are: 1) To find out the implementation of teaching activities of teachers by using Snowball Throwing models for eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kelayang, Indragiri Hulu Regency, 2) To find out the implementation of student activity learning using Snowball Throwing models for VIII grade students of SMPN 1 Kelayang Regency of Indragiri Hulu, 3) To find out the extent of the success of teaching and learning by using Snowball Throwing models in class VIII students of SMPN 1 Kelayang Regency of Indragiri Hulu. This research was conducted in 2 cycles. The subjects in this study were all students of class VIII1 of SMPN 1 Kelayang, Indragiri Hulu Regency, amounting to 33 people. The data analysis technique in this research uses descriptive quantitative. The results showed that student learning outcomes have increased with the average daily cycle repetition is 68.63% and increased on the daily cycle II replications by obtaining an average value of 72.87%. Then it can be concluded that by using the Snowball Throwing model can be the results of learning history subjects of eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kelayang, Indragiri Hulu Regency.

This research is aim at improving to the reading comprehension of eight grade students at SMPN 2 Kedunggalar through Request (Reciprocal Question). In conducting this study, the researcher applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the strategy of the research. It was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted four phases : planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects of the study were 31 students of class VIII B of SMPN 2 Kedunggalar. There were two forms of data in this study. The qualitative data were obtained by doing observing. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were obtained from the students‟ reading comprehension score of the pre-test and post-test and they were analyzed by using descriptive. The students have to reach four indicators they are understanding of content, generic structure, languages feature and purpose recount text. Applied request strategy can improved the students reading skill. The enrichment supported them comprehending the texts. The improvement was supported by the compare of the students‟ mean score from the pre-test, post test 1 and post-test 2 with percentage students passed KKM, 33 percentage 0%,41 percentage 9,7% and 77 96,8%. Their involvement in the reading class also improved. In addition, the students became more active and they enjoyed the process of teaching and learning reading.

English is a foreign language (EFL) for Indonesian students. Therefore, many students still get difficulties to comprehend an English reading text that they read. To overcome the problem, this classroom action research investigated how to improve the students' active participation and their reading comprehension achievement by using Semantic Mapping technique. The research participants were the eighth-grade students at SMPN 8 Jember. Based on the results of the observation and a reading comprehension test, it can be concluded that the implementation of Semantic Mapping technique could improve the eighth-grade students’ achievement in reading comprehension of descriptive text. The research results also showed that the students became more fun and more actively participated both individually and in a group during the teaching and learning process of reading comprehension.

This research is aimed to identify whether scrabble game can improve students’ new vocabulary in recount text at eighth grade of junior high school. This research was conducted in SMPN 39 Bandung. The research was conducted by using quantitative research design, and pre-experimental research method. The researcher used one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 39 Bandung, which consist of 32 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used test. The results of this research show that the scrabble game is able to improve students vocabulary in recount text. It is proved by the significant value using SPSS statistics 21 version to analyze the data by normality test, homogeneity and T-test. Through the normality test, the significant showed 0,090 > 0,05 and 0,061 > 0,05 which means that the data was normal. The data also homogeny with 0,348 > 0,05 as the significant value. Moreover, the T-test also showed that the significant value was 0,000 < 0,05 which means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. In conclusion, applying scrabble game in teaching recount text is recommended because there is significant effect of scrabble game to students in teaching recount text.
