Utilizing Herbert Marcuse’s One-Dimensional Man (1962) and Counterrevolution and Revolt (1972) as a theoretical backdrop, this article seeks to gauge the extent to which the teachings of the German philosopher and political theorist lay the groundwork for the protests mounted by the university students in David Lodge’s campus novel Changing Places (1975). Admittedly, the Student Revolution spilled over into numerous fields. However, given space restrictions, only its cultural manifestations will be examined. It will be clear that at the root of Lodge’s students’ uprising lies an overpowering urge to break with the cultural heritage and with the academics upholding it. It will be equally clear, nonetheless, that these young activists’ faith in Marcuse’s political doctrine is unwelcome to conservative academics on the ground that it has diverse adverse effects on universities. Not only are politically oriented texts and discourses given precedence over traditional ones but also teachers and administrators are, at times, hindered from doing their duties. The plausible conclusion to draw, in the light of the research’s findings, is that although cultural revolutions undeniably pave the way for a number of personal and collective achievements and help us modernize many aspects of life, they should not blind us to the enduring significance of previous cultural traditions and of the aesthetic value of literary works.

Abstratct: The University, the Alma Mater, like any other entity, in this case dedicated to Higher Education, has its commitments before itself, before the Society in which it is located, and before the Student Community. Not only while the students attend their classrooms, but also, when already prepared (or rather graduates), they carry out their personal and peculiar activity in the Society. With the obvious differences, because of the time that passed when Saint Augustine taught, it would be convenient for a University (real or fictitious) to take into account and imitate the form and essence of the Augustinian Magisterium.Palabras clave: Obras de San Agustín. The article is devoted to the study of the features, as well as the establishment and analysis of factors for the formation and imple-mentation of an effective personnel policy of enterprises, including the agricultural sector of the economy. The parameters that affect the effectiveness of the company's personnel policy are defined. The basic principles of personnel policy implementation are summarized and expanded. It is established that the implementation of the personnel policy of the enterprise and the achievement of maximum use of its human resources potential should be based on the creation of equal employment opportunities and career growth of employees. It is proved that the personnel policy of an enterprise is formed under the influence of the external environment, namely socio-political, demographic and socio-economic processes, while adapting through the prism of strategic goals and objectives into a unique manage-ment model for each individual business entity, the main purpose of which is to maximize the full disclosure and use of its own personnel potential. A set of strategic tasks is outlined that should ensure the constant preservation of the numerical and qualitative composition of employees through its periodic restoration and maximum use of human resources in order to constantly improve the efficiency of person-nel work. Various approaches to the interpretation of the content of the concept of «personnel policy» are studied and generalized. The industry features of enterprises operating in the agricultural sector of the national economy are established and cause specific problems in creating a model of personnel policy. It is established that the effectiveness of the personnel policy of agricultural enterprises depends not only on the chosen corporate governance model, which is based on a system of strategic goals and objectives, but is also directly influenced by a complex of factors specific to this sphere of the economy. It is noted that the personnel policy should be formalized as much as possible and clearly, while at the same time remaining flexible and open to continuous improvement. It is noted that when form-ing and actually implementing the personnel policy, it is important for an enterprise to achieve a certain balance of interests of interested parties – the enterprise itself and its employees. Keywords: personnel policy, human resources potential, enterprise personnel, Personnel Management, labor activity, personnel development, agricultural sector of the economy. The scientific achievements of Nicolaus Mercator have in recent years A begun to achieve a just measure of attention (1). Little beyond the bare details, however, is known about the life and career of this early Fellow of the Royal Society. Born Nicolaus Kauffman in Holstein, he was known throughout most of his life by the Latinized version of his name. He attended the University of Rostock and seems to have taught for a time at both his alma mater and at the University of Copenhagen. In 1654 he moved to England after his proposal for a revision of the calendar (2) caught the notice of Oliver Cromwell. He left England for France about 1683, having been engaged by Colbert to design the waterworks at Versailles.

Abstract This study investigates how the importance of English in academia has impacted the academic life of fourteen researchers in the humanities and social sciences (HSS) at one university in Chile and uses semi-structured interviews focussing on scholarly publication. The study intends to discover, firstly, what the national and the university policies are regarding publishing in Spanish and English in Chile; secondly, how important it is to publish in English and Spanish, with respect to the researchers’ disciplines; and, thirdly, whether researchers with expertise in English are better off in terms of publication than those who lack this expertise. Findings suggest that these researchers write more publications in Spanish than in English, but favour publishing in both languages, counterbalancing the spread of English as the dominant language of publication in academia because Spanish and English can co-exist without threatening the scholarly cultural traditions of Spanish scholars. These scholars also recognise that publishing in English assists them to attain a wider readership, and to gain greater monetary rewards for publication in high impact journals, usually in English, as a result of increased grants and promotions. Finally, the paper suggests considering practices for teaching English for Research Publication Purposes.

Harry Lambert Welsh began a long association with the University of Toronto with his enrolment in undergraduate physics in 1926. He brought fame to his Alma Mater with pioneering studies in molecular spectroscopy and intermolecular forces, and he played a major role in the development of the Physics Department with his introduction and establishment of research groups in theoretical, atmospheric, and high-energy physics. Undoubtedly, Harry Welsh’s greatest achievement was the stimulation for scholarly research engendered in 65 Ph.D. students who had the privilege and pleasure to study under his supervision over a period of four decades. These scientists have made, and are continuing to make, important contributions to research in a variety of ways in universities, industry, and government institutions, across Canada and in other countries.

The article investigates the issues of the content of the foreign language training at technical universities. The authors analyze the goals and objectives as well as the requirements and the content of the postgraduate language training to identify some discrepancy, which prevents the university community from achieving the most effi cient outcomes in the training future researchers and engineers in terms of foreign language profi ciency. Based on the examples provided, the authors highlight the necessity to revise the curriculum in order to change its focus and the major components as well as to review the requirements for students at every stage of language learning. The authors do not propose the ready scenario and structure of the course, considering it as the exceptional privilege of each university. However, the model that they propose in the paper and the conclusions they make, might be taken by others as the ground for the course content design.

Sport management programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels have proliferated over the past 2 decades. In most if not all of these programs, the internship course component has been identified as a vital element in professional preparation programs. Teacher/coordinators of sport management programs that include an internship component must be highly skilled to meet student needs. Equally important in the effective delivery of these programs is the need for the university to fully endorse the value of student internships through proper financial, technical, and human resources. The purpose of this paper is to examine, through a review of the literature, the goals and objectives of student internships, program characteristics of meaningful internships, and future implications for teacher/coordinators of sport management programs. Professors of sport management must act as change agents to further enhance the quality of student internships in professional preparation programs.

Аbstract. The issues of tolerance in young people in the process of learning in an educational institution are analyzed. At present, representatives of different cultural traditions, principles of life are forced to share one geographical space. This rapprochement, as real experience shows, does not always proceed peacefully and calmly. Interethnic (intercultural) tension, right up to open confrontation, ethnocentrism, xenophobia - all this testifies to serious problems in modern social relations. There is an opinion that in spite of all the relevance and discussion of this topic in broad social science circles there are no unified approaches to understanding the essential characteristics of the phenomenon of tolerance, there is no understanding of who and how tolerant relations are possible, what are the mechanisms for achieving this goal, Some people see it as a kind of a panacea through which only it is possible to save and preserve civilization, while others believe that it serves only to symbolically hide and cure the real schism and indifference that humanity is exhibiting. A theoretical analysis of the essence of the concept of «tolerance» is reduced to the fact that tolerance by origin is a social category (arises and manifests itself in the process of human interaction with society, with man); it fixes a special (non-violent) type of relationship between a person and society. A characteristic feature of tolerance is the stability of manifestations: at the level of consciousness, it manifests itself in the form of an individual’s attitude, and at the level of behavior as a conscious action or deed, as co-creation. Often, researchers formulate such tasks of psychological and pedagogical activity on the formation of ethnic tolerance of students as the formation of a value attitude to one’s own and other ethnocultures; the formation of motivation for intercultural cooperation; fostering a positive attitude towards cultural differences, the development of intercultural sensitivity; development of skills and skills for effective interaction with representatives of different cultures in the spirit of peace, ethnic tolerance and mutual understanding. Therefore, an important condition for joint activities is the creation in groups with a mixed national composition of an atmosphere of inter-ethnic understanding and tolerance, where everyone, regardless of ethnicity, feels comfortable, open to interaction with others, where ethical standards of behavior in interpersonal communication are observed. That is, the cognitive and emotional components of tolerance are most significant when there are contradictions, clashes of values, dissent in conflict situations. Wherein a tolerant behavior is characterized by the ability not to actualize the conflict, which in turn is determined by the level of upbringing and education.
