Utilizing Herbert Marcuse’s One-Dimensional Man (1962) and Counterrevolution and Revolt (1972) as a theoretical backdrop, this article seeks to gauge the extent to which the teachings of the German philosopher and political theorist lay the groundwork for the protests mounted by the university students in David Lodge’s campus novel Changing Places (1975). Admittedly, the Student Revolution spilled over into numerous fields. However, given space restrictions, only its cultural manifestations will be examined. It will be clear that at the root of Lodge’s students’ uprising lies an overpowering urge to break with the cultural heritage and with the academics upholding it. It will be equally clear, nonetheless, that these young activists’ faith in Marcuse’s political doctrine is unwelcome to conservative academics on the ground that it has diverse adverse effects on universities. Not only are politically oriented texts and discourses given precedence over traditional ones but also teachers and administrators are, at times, hindered from doing their duties. The plausible conclusion to draw, in the light of the research’s findings, is that although cultural revolutions undeniably pave the way for a number of personal and collective achievements and help us modernize many aspects of life, they should not blind us to the enduring significance of previous cultural traditions and of the aesthetic value of literary works.

The research and design of the Kaganga Script Revisualization as Lampung Identity or Had Lampung is an attempt to provide aesthetic value to the conventional letter system. The aesthetic aspects that were given derived from Lampung cultural traditions, icons, and other visual idioms, such as ornaments on tapis cloth, carvings, traditional clothing accessories, and the stylization of Lampung's unique flora and fauna. The research method of the Kaganga script re-visualization is using Creative Thinking Process approach of Bryan Lawson, who applies steps in solving visual communication problems through several stages; (1) initial understanding (2) preparation (3) incubation (4) information (5) verification. Data analysis is done by considering several aesthetics factors; legibility, readability and unity. From several design or prototype alternatives that have been tested, the new Kaganga script using the Jungian (ship) motif was selected. This design uses Lampung traditional idioms to stylize the original script, which are the stylization of the Jung / Ship motif and the motif of Gold Thread Embroidery. Furthermore, this design can be continued on to the public testing and introduce it to Lampung public after it has been digitized.

Contemporary architecture increasingly stands out as a new area of cultural heritage. The "religious patrimony of the future" is one of the principal components which fits naturally into the logical process of preservation and transfer, of the architectural heritage from one generation to the other. The patrimonial process represents the only way to identify and evaluate these "prominent qualities", through different methods of evaluation. this study aims to assess the aesthetic value, considered as one of the essential characteristics of the university mosque in Constantine. It also aims to trigger its heritage process. The methodology was for quantitative and qualitative analysis (quaternaries and formal investigation). The analysis of its outward composition and overall form fits not only into a specific theoretical framework related to the philosophy of art and the subjectivity of beauty perception but depends more on an "in situ" investigation. The evaluation criteria adopted for this study focuses on the values of balance, dominance, unity and variety as well as the parameters of rhythm, proportion and perfect angles. The finding of this study reveals that these criteria made evident different constructive logics used at this university mosque such as the use of Doric proportions and privileged angles, which could serve as an objective argument in according aesthetic value to this mosque in Constantine and prepare its patrimonial future as a religious heritage for future generations.

Abstract: Batik is an Indonesian cultural heritage in the form of various decorative patterns on a garment in a traditional way, passing the imprinting technique using batik wax to produce a motif. One of the motifs that is particularly interesting to be studied is the mok-ramok motif, which is derived from the word ramok that means ‘root’. This motif is unique because the root motif is actually not root-shaped, and it tends to have tiny and detailed root sizes. This is what underlies this research with the aim of analyzing the aesthetics of the mok-ramok batik motif, because essentially batik do not only have economic value but also beauty value. The aesthetic value contained in this motif is divided into two, namely extrinsic and intrinsic. Mok-ramok motifs have a lot of varieties, however, this study only focused on analyzing the three of them. They are the mok-ramok kembhang motif, the mok-ramok engser motif, and the mok-ramok kates motif. The data collection methods in this research were observation, interviews, and documentation. The results discover the aesthetic value of the mok-ramok kembhang motif, the mok-ramok engser motif, and the mok-ramok kates motif in terms of extrinsic and intrinsic values.

AbstractAesthetics is a relevant part of procedures in healthcare, often influencing treatment planning in tandem with a healthy function. Orthodontic treatment (OT) is one of many solutions and is, sometimes, wanted purely for aesthetic reasons. In 1989, Brook and Shaw proposed the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which has been largely used. This study aims to verify the main motivations of university students to look for OT and, based on the Aesthetic Component of the IOTN, weigh the aesthetics influence to seek for it. It was compared the opinion of students from various areas of study - Dentistry, Science and Nature (ScN), Arts and Humanity (AtH) - at the beginning (Initiated Students) and end (Advanced Students) of their graduation; the same question was also analysed taking into account their nationalities and training schools. In a collaboration between the University of Porto (Portugal) and the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), a sample of 1071 individuals was gathered. Participants responded to an online survey, based on IOTN pictures, about what would motivate them to seek OT. The ratings were analysed using the T-Test and alpha error of 5%.The results showed that the total Dentistry students registered a higher Oral Esthetical Sensibility (OES) than the total ScN and AtH students. All groups, except Dentistry Advanced Students, registered a higher OES for Self-Perception than for Perception of Others. In conclusion, for the studied populations, the main motivations for OT demand are primarily and respectively in this order: functional reasons, doctor’s advice, and aesthetical reasons. OES is influenced by Dentistry studies, specifically in Advanced Students. OES is not influenced by the country of the students’ origin nor the country they are graduating at.

This study aims to discuss the aesthetics of visuals ceramic works that apply Balinese puppets ornaments. The data collection method by observation and documentation. The results showed that the aesthetics of the ceramic craft products with Balinese puppets ornaments seen from unity, harmony, symmetry, balance, and contrast are quite good, although not yet optimal. Besides, the visual aesthetics of the ceramic works have not displayed good complexity, so the beauty that obtained was not optimal. The visual aesthetic assessment of this work was subjective in nature, so it was possible that there will be different judgments. The conclusion that aesthetics can be achieved by elevating the cultural traditions of the past and at the same time as a form of appreciation for that culture and become a differentiator amid the rise of Chinese ceramics in Indonesia.

47 university students provided judgments of the aesthetic value of polygon and histogram shapes that were either symmetric or asymmetric. A significant over-all preference for symmetric shapes was evident ( p < .05), and judgments were significantly more positive for brown-eyed subjects. Furthermore, the aesthetic values assigned to shapes showed a systematic interaction with eye color such that brown-eyed subjects produced higher aesthetic ratings for symmetric shapes than blue-eyed subjects, while no such differences appeared for asymmetric shapes.
