The article proposes a solution to the problem of the variety of physico-mathematical models of EEE-storage life test acceleration by implementing a method based on the analysis of the results of accelerated tests in different modes. The objects of the study are reed relays. The article presents the main physico-mathematical models used for calculating the acceleration factor when simulating storage, as well as sets forth a description of a method for comparing these models. According to this method, the product is tested in various modes and, in accordance with the procedure for accelerated storage life testing based on the prediction of parameter time-dependent degradation, the storage period is estimated. Then, for each model, the storage period estimate is obtained for normal climatic conditions together with the standard deviation. The model with the least standard deviation is considered to be the most suitable for the tested type of product. The physico-mathematical models of the acceleration of reed relay failure mechanisms during storage were studied with the help of this technique; the most suitable is the reverse exponential model.

The present article investigates the effect of sodium lactate on microbiological, physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of lightly salted Pacific herring ( Clupea pallasii ) and Baltic herring ( Clupea harengus membras ) during refrigerated storage 5 ± 0.3°C. There have been analyzed different processing methods of lightly salted samples of Pacific and Baltic herring: control (without sodium lactate), and experiment (3% sodium lactate), both in vacuum packaging and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP - 40% CO2/60% N2). For vacuum and MAP there were used bags with low oxygen permeability (3 cm3/m2/day). It was found that 3% sodium lactate keeps firmness of the texture of salted fish muscle and reduces the release of water into the package during storage. Adding 3% sodium lactate reduces the value of the water activity in lightly salted Pacific and Baltic herring by 0.01-0,012 units. The lowest pH (0.02 units) was registered in samples without sodium lactate packed in MAP. Organoleptic signs of spoilage in fish without sodium lactate appeared much earlier, and using 3% sodium lactate both in vacuum and in MAP helped protect and improve organoleptic characteristics of the product during storage. Total biological semination of experimental samples packed in MAP kept at the very low level during the whole storage period, i.e. combined effect of using 3% sodium lactate and MAP inhibited microbial growth. This combination allows to reduce twice the rate of accumulation nitrogen in terminal amino-groups and to increase 1.5-2 times storage life of lightly salted Pacific and Baltic herring, compared to their storage life in vacuum packaging without sodium lactate. The results obtained allow us to recommend using sodium lactate in production of lightly salted fish in oxygen-free packaging, especially in modified atmosphere packaging (40% CO2/60% N2).

The effects of gamma radiation doses of 110,000, 220,000, and 330,000 rad on the storage life and quality of two varieties of strawberries stored at 40°, 55°, and 70° F were studied. Results indicated that a dose of 330,000 rad prevented fungal development of the Redcoat variety stored for 26 days at 40° F. The fungal-free period was sharply reduced at lower radiation doses or at higher storage temperatures. Under the conditions of this trial there was no apparent effect of radiation on appearance or texture of fruit. In organoleptic tests in the first two weeks of storage observers were not able to differentiate between radiation treatments. There was some preference for treated berries as the storage period increased. After 20 days the flavor of the fruit deteriorated very rapidly and it soon became commercially unacceptable.

Three trials were undertaken to study storage conditions and handling procedures required to maximise the postharvest storage life of honeydew melons (Cucumis melo L. var. inodorus Naud.).Honeydew melons treated with chlorine (1000 mg/L), benomyl (250 mg/L) + guazatine (500 mg/L), shrink wrap (17 ym Cryovac XDR film), Semperfresh, wax, or combinations of these treatments were stored at 4 or 8C, for 4 or 6 weeks. Benomyl plus guazatine reduced the development of storage rots associated with Alternaria and Fusarium spp. The use of shrink wrap and wax reduced water loss by melons but increased fungal infection in some cases. Shrink wrapping combined with the fungicide treatment effectively reduced the incidence of fungal breakdown in the storage period for up to 4 weeks. Wax coating with full strength Citruseal wax caused anaerobic tissue breakdown. Melons were affected by chilling injury at 4C. Control of bacterial rots with benomyl + guazatine or with chlorine was variable. Semperfresh did not reduce the incidence of fungal breakdown or water loss from the melons. The results indicate that storage of honeydew melons for 4 weeks at 8C by pretreating with fungicide is possible but the melons soften and rot after 6 weeks, making them unsaleable. Four weeks should be adequate to allow for sea freighting of honeydew melons to markets in South East Asia. Further research is required to determine the optimum storage temperature for honeydew melons.

Beyesian reliebility estimation for the exponential model. based on life tests that are terminated after a preassigned number of failures, is carried out under the assumption of the squared error loss function and a truncated normal priod density on the parameter space. The Bayesian estimation of reliability for the case of ‘attribute life testing’ is also discussed.

Fresh fruit of longan (Dimocarpus longan Lour.) are susceptible to pericarp browning and aril breakdown. Aril breakdown in longan fruit is regarded as one of the most important factors reducing quality and shortening storage life of the fruit. To better understand the molecular mechanism of aril breakdown, the expression patterns of three expansin (EXP) and three xyloglucan endotransglucosylase (XET) genes in relation to the aril breakdown of longan fruit stored at room temperature (25 °C) or low temperature (4 °C) were investigated. The results showed that aril breakdown index increased progressively during storage at 25 and at 4 °C. Northern blotting analysis revealed that the accumulations of three EXP and three XET genes exhibited differential characteristics with the occurrence of aril breakdown. During storage at 25 °C, the accumulations of Dl-XET3 increased after 1 day, suggesting that Dl-XET3 correlated well with the early aril breakdown, while Dl-EXP3 together with Dl-XET1 and Dl-XET2 was involved in later aril breakdown. However, expression of Dl-XET1 and Dl-XET2 could be mainly involved in aril breakdown of longan fruit stored at 4 °C. In addition, Dl-EXP2, whose accumulation increased sharply when longan fruit were transferred from low temperature to room temperature within 12 hours, was related to the aril breakdown in this storage period. These data indicated that Dl-EXPs and Dl-XETs were closely related to aril breakdown in longan fruit.

Propolis (bee glue) is a complex biological product known for its antimicrobial activity and antioxidant potential, and widely used as food additive and biopreservative. The aim of the present research was to examine the effects of propolis on the improvement of the storage life of ripened kashkaval cheese. For this purpose, three types of 1% carboxymethyl cellulose edible films containing three different ethanolic propolis extracts in concentration of 1% were prepared. Double-layer edible films were applied on the kashkaval cheese surface, and the samples were designated as T1, T2, and T3. An untreated sample was kept as a control. The four experimental groups (T1, T2, T3, and control) were then stored under refrigeration conditions at 4°C and 75% relative humidity (RH) for 56 days. During the storage period, the cheese was observed for visible changes, and samples for physicochemical and microbiological analyses were taken. The results from physicochemical analysis demonstrated that values of titratable acidity decreased in all experiment groups during the storage period. The results from microbiological analysis revealed that three types of edible films T1, T2, and T3 did not affect the decreasing number of lactic acid bacteria, a normal process for the period after the cheese ripening. The application of T1, T2, and T3 edible films did not affect the increasing number of yeasts in kashkaval cheese through the storage period. However, T1 and T2 edible films effectively inhibited the fungal growth on cheese surface, and no signs of spoilage were observed until the end of the storage for 56 days. In contrast, T3 treatment delayed but did not inhibit the fungal growth, and the first signs of fungal decay appeared between the 35th and 42nd day of the storage, compared to the control (28th day). Thus, the application of propolis can be considered an effective means for the prevention of fungal spoilage of kashkaval cheese.

Para estimar a erosividade da chuva, nas condições climáticos da região de São Mateus-ES, o modelo matemático mais adequado é o II.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Evaluation of mathematical models to estimate rainfall erosivity in the region of São Mateus-ES</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>This study aimed to estimate the rainfall erosivity by six mathematical models, linear regression, and evaluate these, which is more suitable for the climatic conditions of São Mateus-ES region. The rainfall data were obtained from the National Water Agency-ANA, and 1947-2014 for Itauninhas, 1971-2014 to Barra Nova, 1981-2014 for São João da Cachoeira Grande and 1993-2014 for Boca da Vala. To estimate the rainfall erosivity, from the annual precipitation and rainfall coefficient were used different equations used in other states with application to the state of the Holy Spirit or adjusted to the state itself. For mathematical models (II) and (I), the average values were 6541.2 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 to 936.357 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 (Itauninhas) of 6995.855 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1 to 1420.296 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 (Barra nova), to 6297.272 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 and 1014.815 MJ mm ha-1 h-1 year-1 (São João da Cachoeira Grande) and 5427.659 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 to 1626.489 MJ ha-1 mm h-1 year-1 (Boca da Vala). For the municipalities of Barra Nova and Boca da Vala the rainfall erosivity was estimated by EI30 = 6.4492*pi - 391.63 with leptokurtic distribution. For the other two locations, the distribution was platykurtic. The climatological station with the highest amount of average rainfall erosivity was Barra Nova, while Boca da Vala had the lowest erosivity, considering only an estimated rainfall erosivity by the mathematical model II. The highest and lowest values erosivity of the rain were obtained with the mathematical models I and II. To estimate the rainfall erosivity in the climatic conditions of São Mateus-ES region, the most suitable mathematical model is II.</p>

During dry seasons, equines are traditionally fed hay. However, if not prepared under favorable climatic conditions and if not properly stored, hay does not preserve its nutritional value. The aim of this research was to evaluate the chemical composition in Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Mineirão and Estilosantes Campo Grande hay varieties, used to feed equines over 225 days of storage. Treatments consisted of Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Mineirão and Estilosantes Campo Grande hay varieties, assessed at six moments of storage: 0, 45, 90, 135, 180, and 225 days. The experiment followed a completely randomized split-plot design. In the comparison between varieties, differences (P0.05) over the 225 days of storage. The storage period had little impact on the nutritional quality of the assessed hays. The Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Mineirão and, mainly, Estilosantes Campo Grande hay varieties have potential to be used in equine diet.
