This study focused on examining the intergroup relations among ethnically diverse university students. The study was conducted in Bahir Dar University, one of the public universities in Ethiopia– a country of “indigenous ethnic diversity”. The participants were students, teachersand support staff selected usingpurposive and snowball sampling. The necessary data were collected throughinterview andfocus group discussion. The studyrevealed different factors that are internal and external to the university facilitateand impede intergroup relations among students. The study also showed that students generally have positive attitude toward outgroups and developing positive intergroup relations. This finding has very strong implications in managing intergroup relations not only in universities but also in the society. The university management, however, was found unable to provide much support to such positive attitudesand promoting diversity mainly because of lack of institutional priority as well as managers’ confidence and diversity management skills.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/jer.v3i2.8399Journal of Education and Research August 2013, Vol. 3, No. 2, pp. 77-95

Despite the contributions of university education to nation-building, the potential of Nigeria’s university system to fulfil its responsibilities is frequently obstructed by crises. Among the prominent crises, according to observations and literature, are those linked to student-management dichotomies, which make it practically impossible for universities to actualise their aims. This study is framed by the theory of decoloniality, and aimed to formulate a strategy to enhance the management of crises involving students and universities authorities. Participatory Action Research was adopted as research design. Focus group discussion was used to collect data. Ten participants that acted as co-researchers, from Nigeria, representing university management staff, lecturers, security personnel and student union leaders, both past and present. The participants were selected using the expert sampling technique. Socio-thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The study revealed that a lack of modern communication, poor dialogue mechanisms, and students’ non-involvement in decision-making were major propellers of student-management dichotomies in the university system. The study recommends solutions, among which a mobile/electronic application designed as a strategy to decolonise the old ways of managing students in a university system.   Received: 18 November 2020 / Accepted: 2 February 2021 / Published: 5 March 2021

The present research featured the psychological and pedagogical conditions that shape the learning environment in the multiethnic space at university. The article focuses on the methods and technologies that develop a multiethnic learning environment based on the psychological phenomena of leadership and group norms. These methods evolved from psychological theories of leadership, norm formation, and small group development. The article also describes how these methods and technologies can be implemented in practice in order to provide the most favorable environment in conditions of ethnic diversity. The technologies include directing leader’s activity and developing group norms. The first technology sets behavior patterns and develops personal qualities of the leader while attracting other students’ attention to his or her activities. The method of developing group norms includes instruction, group discussion, private counseling on intercultural issues, and teacher’s own role model. Methods and technologies for creating a favorable learning environment are based on the need to bring up an ethno-oriented personality. These methods affect psychological characteristics of students, especially those associated with the ability to modify one’s behavior for beneficial intercultural communication. In the context of the multicultural learning practice, the educational tasks of the selected technologies of psycho-pedagogical interaction are to immerse students in the cognitive multicultural process, thus using the multicultural environment of the university as a factor of self-development.

Communication technology has played an important role in disseminating information to the public. This information includes the dissemination of photographic images seen in various forms. The Internet is also seen as a tool to convince the public of an event. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to see what are the main factors that influence students to tend to do the sharing of photographic images in the online community. The method used for this research was a focus group discussion (FGD) consisting of 21 informants aged 20 - 25 years old. All informants are students of the University College of Yayasan Pahang (UCYP). To see the basis of the spread of a photographic image, Narrative Theory has been used to support this study. The findings of the study found that several factors are seen as the main factors of image sharing online. Among them is the use of themes in the image and the emotions found in the image. In addition, ‘subject matter’ and ethics is an important factor that is evaluated before a photographic image is shared. However, some informants do not take any action instead are more interested in sharing photographic images. This is due to the lack of exposure to photography and the use of the media itself.

Both quotes point to the importance of a center. A center connotes stability, solidity, balance, equilibrium at the core. At the university level this center should be found in the dynamic interdependence of the five constituencies of a university—students, faculty, administration and staff, the support base, and the public. In this article I will discuss how and if the African university center holds and if it can be identified as exemplifying something near excellence, focusing on two universities.

Recently conflict among university students has become common phenomenon at higher education around Indonesia. Makassar is considered one of the prone conflict areas which can destroy campus academic life as scientific institution where students are expected to be able to become more educative, more human, more democratic and more harmonious people around the society.  This study aims at exploring  the causes of the conflict happened at the university students in South Sulawesi, the efforts done by the tertiary institution in overcoming students conflict, the potential of applying multicultural  education, and finding out the model of students resolution conflict based on multicultural education approach. This research applied qualitative approach by using likert-scale questionnaire, in-depth interview and Focus Group Discussion (FGD), observation,  documentation and videoing to get data.   The obtained data are analyzed qualitatively and percentage based on the likert scale; data display, data reduction, data interpretation, and data conclusion. The result of the study demonstrated that most of the students’ conflicts are dealing with inequality, lack of intercultural understanding, and a very limited space for ethnic and individual expressions as part of academic society. This leads to potentially open a space for applying multicultural education as an alternative model for mental revolution in teaching Intercultural Communication to university students.

Unlike the leisure practices of migrants from Central Asia in large Russian cities, which recently came to the attention of researchers, the presence of this population in the urban cultural infrastructure has hardly been studied so far. This research, based on in-depth interviews with members of community-based organizations and artistic groups established by people from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, as well as observation of their activities at various cultural venues in Moscow, discusses the peculiarities of post-Soviet diversity management. In this article I am making two main points: (i) The self-presentations of people of Central Asian origin on various public platforms in Moscow largely involve performing the role of ambassadors of a homogenous 'national culture'. Such a form of cultural behaviour, inherited from Soviet past, allows the participants of corresponding events to achieve guaranteed recognition from both the host site and their compatriots. It legitimizes their presence in the public sphere as agents of the 'dialogue of cultures,' since it fits the dominant discourse of ethnic diversity in Russia. Thus, for the majority of informants, culture turns out to be a kind of 'safe space,' cleansed of the daily troubles associated with labour migration; (ii) it may seem that this kind of self-expression for migrants is determined by social powers: whether the latter are officials, responsible for national policy in Moscow, embassies of Central Asian republics, or public organizations calling themselves 'diasporas'. But with a deeper study of the issue, it turns out that the aforementioned scenarios of self-presentation are still playable without direct influence from the authorities. The explanation is that Central Asian migrants voluntarily accept this representation that is Soviet in form and national in content as far as it makes it possible to symbolically overcome the marginalization that they face.
