This article is based on the major findings of a field study recently conducted in Gandaki  Rural Municipality of Gorkha district after the 2015 earthquake with its epicentre at Barpak of the same district, which quaked  the  region of northern midhills of Nepal. The study examined how far neighbouring households, community organizations, and state agencies contributed to building community resilience in this earthquake affected area. More specifically, it investigated into the efficacy of reaconstruction initiatives to provide relief to the earthquake victims for their recovery. To explore the issue, mixed-method approach of both quantitative and qualitative research was applied. Primary data were collected from the stakeholders through questionnaires and focus group discussions. The convenience sampling method was used to select 116 households from Ward No. 1 of the Municipality. The findings of the research indicate that contribution towards building community resilience was the highest from the neighbouring households followed by community organizations whereas the least contribution was from the state agencies. We found that community resilience practice in the area has not been as effective as expected. So collective and coordinated effort is necessary for building community resilience.

Leadership styles adopted influence employee performance, but merely appropriate style without workforce reskilling cannot ensure sustainable and holistic organizational performance. The objective of this chapter is to explore and analyze leadership for enhancing organizational performance through workforce reskilling in the context of a local authority, namely municipality. Adopting mixed method approach, the primary data was collected by administering questionnaires. A sample size of 100 respondents participated in the study with the aid of convenience sampling technique for proportionate representation from each department. However, out of 100 questionnaires distributed, only 96 were completed and returned. Analysis is done by STATISTICA Software. The findings reflect that both democratic and autocratic leadership are adopted and there was insufficient workforce reskilling required to meet the current needs of the organization.

Abstract Introduction Community resilience, the ability of a community to respond positively to adverse situations, is an increasingly important topic in public health. Many resilience frameworks are grounded in concepts initially developed by ecologists to describe and explain the capacity of complex systems, such as a community, to persist or return to its original state following disturbances. As a result, much of the research on resilience is concerned with maintaining systems in their current form, preventing degradation, or promoting recovery. However, for a system that is stuck in a trap, or an unfavorable state, deliberate efforts to build the components that contribute to resilience, called adaptive capacities, may enable that system to reorganize after a disturbance to reach a more favorable state. Objective The purpose of this research was to apply a resilience framework to analyze how the community of St. Gabriel, Louisiana adapted in response to environmental change. Methods We used qualitative case-study methodologies to systematically collect newspaper articles, which served as primary data sources to examine how resilience and adaptive capacity evolved in the community of St. Gabriel, Louisiana. Results Key events in the recent history of St. Gabriel include industrial development, growing concern about environmental health and pollution, the environmental justice (EJ) movement, and the incorporation of the community as a self-governing municipality. Two events, the community’s organized resistance to a large hazardous waste facility and the change in government structure, represent critical transformations, or fundamental changes in how the community functions. Conclusion The incorporation of St. Gabriel gave community members more input in planning and development decisions. As a result, the community has taken steps to improve public health in the form of zoning ordinances to prevent new exposure risks and building community infrastructure, such as a new sewer system and a recreation center.

A field survey was conducted during 2016 to estimate the profitability of normal season and off-season muskmelon cultivation in district Sialkot, Pakistan. The primary data was collected from forty farmers with convenience sampling method. Economic parameters like net return and BCR were employed. Off-season muskmelon cultivation was found economically feasible due to additions of yield (17%), gross income (122%), profit (161%) and market price (90%) in comparison to normal season crop. Therefore, it is recommended to cultivate the off-season muskmelon (BCR 3.26) to obtain more profit and fulfill the customer demand in less supply period instead of normal season cultivation (BCR 2.44).

The social sciences in Latin America have always had a special connection with the study and analysis of the place of emotions in the social structuration processes. The aim of this article is to offer a synthetic exposition of some inquiries about emotions and the politics of sensibilities in Latin America, emphasizing those that are being felt in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this objective, first we offer a synthesis of the theoretical and methodological points that will guide the interpretation; then we draw on pre-existing inquiries and surveys which allow us to capture the state of sensibilities before and during the pandemic in the region; and finally some conclusions are presented. The work is based on a multi-method approach, where qualitative and quantitative secondary and primary data are articulated in tandem.
