Empathy refers to the capacity to experience emotions similar to those observed or imagined in another person, with the full knowledge that the other person is the source of these emotions. Awareness of one's own emotional states is a prerequisite for self-other differentiation to develop. This study investigated gender differences in empathy during adolescence and tested whether emotional self-awareness explained these differences. Two-hundred-eleven adolescents (108 girls and 103 boys) between 14 and 19 years completed the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) to assess empathy and emotional self-awareness, respectively. Overall, girls obtained higher scores than boys on IRI subscales like emotional concern, personal distress, and fantasy. Regarding emotional self-awareness, we found gender differences in TAS-20 scores, with girls reporting greater difficulty identifying feelings and less externally oriented thinking than boys. Difficulty identifying feelings explained the greatest personal distress experienced by girls. Lower externally oriented thinking accounted for girls’ greater emotional concern and fantasy. These findings offer an insight into the role of emotional self-awareness–which is essential for self-other differentiation–as an account for gender differences in empathic abilities during adolescence. In girls, difficulty identifying feelings can impair the ability to differentiate between ones’ and others’ emotions, leading them to experience self-focused and aversive responses when confronted with others’ suffering. Conversely, in boys, externally oriented thinking can mitigate personal distress when faced with others’ discomfort.

Purpose Employee’s lying behavior has become ubiquitous at work, and managers are keen to know what can be done to curb such behavior. Managers often apply anti-lying strategies in their management and, in particular, the role of self-awareness on lying intervention has drawn academic attention recently. Drawing on multi-disciplinary literature, this study aims to investigate the efficacy of self-awareness in reducing lying behavior. Design/methodology/approach Following the perspectives of positivism and deductive reasoning, a quasi-experimental research approach was adopted. Employees from Dijon, France were recruited as research participants. Based on the literature, different conditions (scenario manipulation) were designed and implemented in the laboratory, in which participants were exposed to pre-set lying opportunities and their responses were analyzed accordingly. Findings Unlike prior studies which praised the merits of self-awareness, the authors found that self-awareness did not decrease lying behavior, not encouraging the confession of lying either. Employees actually lied more when they believed other employees were lying. Practical implications This study suggests managers not to rely on employee’s self-awareness; rather, the concept of self-awareness should be incorporated into the work ethics, and managers should schedule regular workshops to keep employees informed of the importance of ethics. When employees are regularly reminded of the ethics and appreciate its importance, their intention of lying is more likely to decrease. Originality/value To the best of the atuhors’ knowledge, the current research is the first in its kind to investigate lying intervention of employees in the laboratory setting. Research findings have brought new insights into the lying intervention literature, which has important implication on the implementation of anti-lying strategies.

This article is concerned with the role of contextual conditions on motivational orientations and emotional experiences within the German Dual System of vocational education (VE). In our research approach we differentiate between three exemplary levels and meanings of context: educational setting, learning arrangement, and learning situation. Prior research in Germany has focused primarily on the analyses of differential motivational conditions and effects in two main educational settings: vocational school and training in companies. In a study in the educational setting of a company we tried to analyze the relation among contextual aspects at the level of learning arrangements and learning situations, intrinsic and extrinsic motivational orientations, and a selected set of emotional experiences. We used a variety of different methodological approaches including video-based observations, and the experience-sampling method (ESM). Comparing the indicators of extrinsic and intrinsic motivational orientations between the two main learning arrangements (training at the workplace and lessons about vocational knowledge), we found significant differences only for interest orientation (not for achievement orientation) and for exemplary indicators of a positive emotional experiences (feelings of being interested and feelings of being committed). Contrary to our theoretical expectations, the measures indicating the quality of emotional experiences with respect to the postulated system of basic needs (competence, autonomy, relatedness) did not vary systematically with the contextual conditions under consideration.

Collective accompaniment, as per the reflexivity approach on-in-for practice, requires the adoption of different postures, whether one is placed in the role of the accompanying or accompanied person. This article presents the lived experiences of an accompaniment process fostering research and training within an individual and collective reflexivity approach. Three types of actors are interrelated: an accompanying research director, an accompanied and accompanying doctoral candidate, and accompanied and accompanying English as a second language teachers. Advocating for an action-research approach using the first-person point of view (“I”), each actor was invited to reflect on their practice from an on-in-for perspective. The discussion presents three dimensions: the role of ethical rules, the art of questioning, and the interdependence between involved actors.

Sayyid marriages that occur in the community of Cikoang Village, Takalar Regency are one of the distinguishing characteristics for ordinary people in carrying out their marriages, namely there are separate rules for sayyid women, namely Sayyid women cannot marry men who are not of Sayyid descent or descent  of the Prophet Muhammad SAW.  The research approach used descriptive qualitative methods carried out in Cikoang Village, Takalar District.  Primary data obtained by means of observation, interviews, documentation.  Secondary data comes from books and journals.  This research shows that the way to preserve marriage still exists today, namely, the factor of belief, they believe that their descendants come from the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.  And the rule factor is that sayyid circles have rules in carrying out marriage, namely sayyid women cannot marry men who are not of Sayyid descent, but sayyid men can marry women outside their circle.  and the witness factor, namely for women who violate these rules will be subject to sanctions in the form of no longer being considered in their family and among their circle as Sayyid descendants and are considered dead.  Meanwhile, the solution for Sayyid women who do not have a partner among them is to match a Sayyid male.  And the second solution is to allow Sayyid women to marry under the applicable sanctions.

The advent of the Internet has facilitated many new forms of communication and thus has laid the foundation for new forms of interaction and social organization. The challenges of gaining insight into the social processes that occur in these newly emerging digital spaces require the development of new research approaches and methodologies. Netnography, or Internet ethnography, is one such example. It focuses on gaining cultural insights from virtual community environments and was originally developed for consumer research in the field of marketing, but has since been used in a number of other fields, including urban planning. This chapter examines the philosophical assumptions and specific methods of netnography as a newly emerging research approach. Findings from a qualitative analysis of ten cases of published netnography studies reveal differences in both philosophical assumptions and uses as a research methodology, including the subject of research – community – and the role of the researcher. The chapter closes with some recommendations and a call for future research.
