The aim of this paper is to review the literature and exemplify the manifestation of integrative and instrumental motivational orientations in Pakistan’s ESL learners with reference to Gardner’s Socio-Educational model. It delineates issues that impede the motivational process and contextual elements with motivational factors that could provide new insights to help practitioners plus policy makers to determine and address contemporary concerns in the holistic learning of English. The study principally sheds light on the current state of motivation in Pakistani ESL students, projecting a need to revise the English language curricula to more inclusive ones at all academic tiers; construct collegial classrooms; modify the practiced didactic approaches and focus on development of contextually suitable contents as some of the initiatives that need to be taken into consideration for nurturing students’ and teachers’ motivation in alignment with the model. The present study majorly proposes the need to utilize the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) for comprehensive analysis of students’ motivation and it provides an adapted simplified version of AMTB that can be used to examine Pakistani ESL students’ motivation, and further tested in other similar contexts.   Key Words: ESL, instrumental, motivational orientations, integrative, language learning.   Cite as: Jafri, U. The present study is part of an exploratory research study conducted to understand the Learning experiences of adult learners in Higher Education Institutes in India. The primary aim of the present study was to examine the motivational orientations of adult learners for lifelong educational courses and hence, the Educational Participation Scale (EPS) by Boshier was used to examine the motivational orientations among adult learners enrolled in selected lifelong courses. In total, seven motivational factors were identified among the adult learners to enrol in the Programmes: Communication skills and Social contact, Professional advancement, Intellectual recreation, Cognitive interest, Family Togetherness, Children Relationship and Educational Compensation. Age, gender, type of course and educational background had varying influences on the motivational orientation of the adult learners. Though professional advancement was found to be higher, Communication skills, social contact and family togetherness was found to be significantly higher among older research participants aged 50 years and above.

The antagonistic personality trait Machiavellianism (Mach) should be characterized by duplicity, proclivity to manipulation, cynical disregard of others, long-term planning, and low aggression. Opposed to theoretical descriptions, recent studies revealed links between Mach and neuroticism, impulsivity, and aggression. The advantages of a multidimensional assessment of Mach are well known but were seldom implemented. Hence, differential effects within Mach have often been neglected. Based on previous research on basic motivational orientations, we derived two facets—Machiavellian approach and Machiavellian avoidance. These facets account for exploitative, strategic striving for resources and for misanthropic, distrustful loss-prevention, respectively. In two studies (total N = 1,000, 21% men), we found support for the two-factor structure, for measurement invariance across sexes, and the nomological network of the 8-item Machiavellian Approach and Avoidance Questionnaire (MaaQ). As expected, Machiavellian approach was primarily associated with hope for power, whereas Machiavellian avoidance was linked to affective criteria and aggression. Both approach and avoidance shared links with disagreeableness, dishonesty, and cynicism. Furthermore, they correlated with other Mach scales. The findings explain counterintuitive links with other constructs found in earlier studies and thereby further the understanding of Mach.

The main goal of modern second language (L2) pedagogy is to engender appropriate communication skills among its learners. Hence, willingness to communicate (WTC) in L2 emerged as an important variable in recent years. Several factors have been found to influence students’ L2 WTC directly or indirectly. For this purpose, many scales and questionnaires have been developed so far to examine the factors influencing WTC among L2 students. However, a comprehensive questionnaire on WTC inside ESL classroom is still lacking. Likewise, WTC in relation to language use and motivational orientations in a single study has yet to be investigated. Thus, this study was aimed to develop and validate questionnaires on WTC, language use and motivational orientations. For this purpose, a five-phase model was used.  After an extensive literature review, questionnaires on WTC, language use and motivational orientations were framed. Operational definitions of the three constructs were established and the items of the questionnaires were finalised. Two experts in the field of applied linguistics determined the content validity of the questionnaires. At the end, the questionnaires were piloted on 50 undergraduates and 10 ESL teachers. The results revealed that all the instruments were valid and highly reliable.

Objectives. To study the need-motivational component of the communicative activities of medical students of VSMU and to analyze the dynamics and gender differences in the indices of levels of need and motivational orientation in communication. Material and methods. We examined 527 students of the medical faculty, there were 386 second-year students (117 boys and 269 girls); 141 sixth-year students (28 boys and 113 girls) from all of them. The study of the need for communication was carried out using the methodology of Yu.M. Orlov «The need for communication». To study motivational orientation in communication, we used the methodology «Diagnostics of motivational orientations in interpersonal communications» (I.D.Ladanov, V.A.Urazaeva). Results. The students demonstrated the dominance of the average level of the need for communication and motivational orientations in communication, which is considered to be optimal. The dynamics of the indices of the levels of the need for communication is considered as conditionally positive, and the levels of motivational orientation - as positive. The revealed patterns are most typical of young men. Conclusions. The patterns of the need for communication and communicative orientations (including their dynamics) identified by us can be explained by the quality of the humanities education of students, as well as the influence of the information and educational environment of VSMU on the personal growth of students of the medical faculty, on the formation of their communicative competence.

Based on the motivation theory, this study aims to investigate the motivational orientations of the English learners from Management majors. 32 graduate students participated in the questionnaire and accomplished the interview in this research. Based on the statistics processed by SPSS, it is found that (1) instrumental orientation is significantly stronger than the integrative type; (2) among all the motivation items, the most three significant motivations are preparing for a future career, desiring to be a knowledgeable person and passing exams. Besides, based on the analysis of interview, a model of major-oriented, international and nested systems of instrumental motivation was constructed, indicating the interrelationship between motivational factors: globalization, social expectation, university policy, major needs and learner factors. It is expected that this study can provide some implications to English teaching to management students with the investigation of the systematic structure of their motivations.
