scholarly journals IMPROVING SPEAKING ABILITY ON PUBLIC SPEAKING CLASS BY USING ROLE-PLAYING TECHNIQUE OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STUDENTS

This research aims to improve speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class of class A1 students of English Education Department students, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta in the academic year of 2012/2013. The effort which was done is using role-playing as a technique in teaching and learning activities. This collaborative and participative action research consisted of three cycles, with plan, action, observation, and reflection in each cycle. The participants were the students of class A1 of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, PGRI University of Yogyakarta. The data were collected by means of interviewing, recording technique, observing, and assessing. The qualitative data were analyzed through data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing, while the quantitative data was analyzed descriptively by counting the mean score and the score percentage of the result of the observation. The results of research show that using role-playing technique can improve students’ speaking ability on speaking for specific purposes class. It can be indicated by the improvement of the activity of speaking classroom English, the interaction between teacher and students, and the students and teacher’s attention. The improvement of speaking ability on classroom English is also supported by the improvement of students’ achievement in speaking performance to a mean score of 161,18 or 70,579% (cycle I), 176,31 or 76,956% (cycle II), and 198,16 or 85,797% (cycle III).

This research investigates how process of speaking instruction takes place at IAIN SMH Banten. There are three main issues in the research problems: the process of teaching speaking, obstacles found in the teaching and learning process, and what efforts do they make to solve the obstacles in speaking. The process of teaching speaking discusses materials, preparation, procedures or steps in teaching speaking while obstacles and solutions discuss the speaking barriers that the students faced in speaking class and how they minimize the barriers. By applying descriptive qualitative research design to students of fourth semester in academic year 2014/2015, the result shows that the focus of speaking instruction at the fourth semester of English education department of IAIN SMH Banten seemed to let the students speak, without any language skills discussion as the feedback. At the same time, during the process of speaking instruction there are some problems faced by students. The first is  problem of limited English Competence dealt with students poor of vocabulary and the second is problems of psychological factors.

The obejectives of this research are to know the improvement  of the students’ achievement in poetry mastery and their perception regarding to the semiotic method in teaching and learning poetry in  English Education Department, Languages and Art Faculty of State University of Medan. The research method used is the Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subjects of the research are the fifth semester of 37 students of 2013/2014 academic year. The data are collected by test in order to know the students’ achievment in poetry mastery. The students’ perception toward the implementation of the semiotic method for teaching and learning poetry is collected by questionaire. The data are analyzed by descriptive analysis. The result of research shows that (1) the average score of the students’ achievement of poetry mastery is (71.75) or it increases (11,59) point from pre-test (60.16) and (2) in general, the students’ perception toward the semiotic method for teaching and learning poetry are good and positive.

Students engagement is a critical topic in the discussion of teaching and learning process quality, including at a tertiary level. The goal of this classroom action research is improving English education department engagement in a listening class through magic tricks problem-based activities. This research was conducted at the College of Teacher-Training and Education of Universitas Tanjungpura (FKIP UNTAN), Pontianak – Indonesia, in October-November 2018. The research was conducted in two cycles and the data were collected through participant observation. In three stages of analysis (initial coding, focused coding, and explanation), this research successfully improved the students' engagement. The students’ engagement was improved substantially in the second cycle after the magic trick activities were combined with pair discussion, group discussion, and cross-group discussion. The magic trick problem-based activities was an important factor that could invite the students' intellectual engagement. Whereas, the discussion activities improved the students emotional and behavioral engagement. The creative variation in the discussion stage had improved the students' engagement considerably.

This study investigated the use of cable TV to increase listening comprehension of the students of English education department of Muria Kudus University. The aims were to find out: (1) the listening comprehension achievement of the students taught by using cable TV, (2) the students’ response towards the teaching of listening comprehension class by using cable TV, and (3) the students’ difficulties when being involved in the listening class taught by using cable TV are. A classroom action research was conducted with three cycles. The data was collected by using test, observation checklist, & a questionnaire. The subject consisted of 29 students joining Advanced Listening class. The findings show that: (a) The listening comprehension achievement of the students taught by using cable TV in cycle I, II, & III is fair, (b) The students have enthusiasm and seriousness and motivation in joining the class in all cycles, (c) In cycle III the students’ difficulties when being involved in the listening comprehension class taught by using cable TV are more and more decreasing. The objective of this research is to know whether Podcast can improve the students’ pronunciation in speaking English when it is implemented in teaching learning process in class 01 Semester I, English Education Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, UNISRI, Surakarta in 2019/2020 Academic Year.This research method used a Classroom Action Research which was implemented in two cycles. The subject of the research was class 01 Semester I, English Education Program, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, UNISRI, Surakarta in 2019/2020 Academic Year. This study was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consisted of four meetings, and the second cycle consisted of three meetings. The procedure of the action research consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, field notes, and test. To analyze the quantitative data, the researcher applied descriptive statistics. It was used to compare the scores and means of pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was conducted in the preliminary research while post-test was conducted at the end of cycle 1 and 2. The result of the test was used to know how well the students understand the text of listening. To analyze the qualitative data, the researcher analyzed the improvement of the teaching learning process based on the results of questionnaire, interview, and field notes.The result of the research showed that the use of Podcast has helped students to get exposed to correct pronunciation. By constantly listening to Podcast of native speakers of English, students develop their skill not only in listening but also in pronouncing the words in English correctly. It also has helped the students in improving the students’ vocabulary mastery. In conclusion, by listening to Podcast, students can improve their pronunciation and vocabulary mastery so that they also can speak more during the speaking activity.Based on the result of the study, it can be concluded that students’ pronunciation in English can be improved by the use of Podcast. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers and students can use Podcast as one of the alternative techniques in teaching and learning speaking.Keywords : Podcast, Proununciation, Speaking Skill, Action Research

This research begun from the students’ problems in understanding the English structure at the first semester of English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Madura Islamic University (UIM) Pamekasan. From the data, it showed that most of students did not achieve the target score 75 (B), it was only 43.75% students. These problems occurred because 1) they used to memorize the pattern of English structure, 2) they seldom practice it in spoken or written, 3) they felt afraid of making mistakes. Concerning with these, the researcher tried to solve by implementing an appropriate strategy, it is SAVI (SOMATIC, AUDITORY, VISUAL AND INTELLECTUAL) which was introduced by Dave Meire. The research design is Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was done in two cycles with four steps; planning, acting, observing and reflecting. After conducting the research, there were significant improvements of students’ score. From the data, in the preliminary study, there were only 43.75% who achieved the target score. After implementing SAVI in the cycle I, there were improvement of students score, it was 62.5% students who achieved the target score. In cycle II, there were 87.5% students. From the data above, it could be concluded that implementing SAVI is success because it achieved the target score, it is more than 85% students got 75 (B). This research is based on the needs to investigate the students’ ability in writing a research proposalfor the fourth year students at English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and EducationUniversity of Lancang Kuning. This research aims at analyzing the students’ ability of the fourth year students at English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education University of Lancang Kuning in writing a research proposal. The method employed in this research is qualitative method with survey research design. The total number of population in this research were 132 students. The sample elected were 20 students. Based on the data which have been collected and analyzed, it were found that the students’ ability in writing a research proposal categorized into “middle”. The average score achieved was 67.1. It was categorized into middle. Based on the research finding above, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in writing a research proposal is categorized into middle. This result is in line with the analysis of writing a research proposal using scoring rubric available in this research.

Bodyweight training using Tabata method is used as an alternative to keep physical fitness in a short duration. The research on the effectiveness of bodyweighty training using Tabata method to improve physical fitness of new students of 2016-2017 academic year in Sport Coaching Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of PGRI Adibuana Surabaya. The purpose of this research is to give students solution to  improve and maintain their physical fitness condition that they can perform daily activities maximally. This is an experimental research using one groups pre-test - post-test design, where pretest is given before treatment and posttest after the treatment. The instruments of this research are; MFT (Multistage Fitness Test) to know VO2 max, and test of endurance and muscle strength including: (1) sit up and pull up test; (2) grip strength test, used to measure the hand muscles; (3) back dynamometer, used to measure the back muscles strength; and (4) leg dynamometer, used to measure leg muscle strength.The data analysis technique uses t-test. T-test statistical analysis is conducted to find out whether there is a significant improvement in bodyweight training using Tabata method to improve  new students’ physical fitness in 2016-2017 academic year. The result of the research shows that Ho (Null hypothesis) is  accepted, with score of -6,99192 <2,04523. The score of Fobserved is -6,99192 in which Critical score of two-tail (t-table) is 2.04523. Thus, it shows that Ho (Null hypothesis) is accepted, meaning bodyweight training using Tabata method is effective to improve physical fitness of sport coaching education department students in faculty of teacher training and education, University of PGRI Adibuana Surabaya. Therefore, it can be concluded that bodyweight training using Tabata method can improve physical fitness of sport coaching education department students in faculty of teacher training and education, university of PGRI Adibuana Surabaya. ABSTRAK Bodyweight training dengan metode tabata digunakan sebagai alternatif untuk aktifitas fisik agar kebugaran jasmani terjaga tanpa harus menggunakan durasi waktu yang panjang. Penelitian tentang efektifitas latihan bodyweighty training dengan menggunakan metode tabata untuk meningkatkan kebugaran jasmani dilakukan pada mahasiswa baru angkatan 2016-2017 Pendidikan Kepelatihan Olahraga, Fakultas Keguruan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas PGRI Adibuana Surabaya. Melalui penelitian ini  diharapkan mampu memaksimalkan dan sekaligus memberi solusi kepada mahasiswa untuk dapat selalu melakukan aktifitas fisik agar dapat meningkatkan dan menjaga kondisi kebugaran jasmani sehingga mahasiswa mampu melakukan aktifitas sehari-hari dengan maksimal dan lebih berkualitas. Penelitian ini menggunakan eksperimen dengan desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian yaitu one groups pretest-posttest design, desain penelitian yang terdapat pretest sebelum diberi perlakuan dan posttest setelah diberi perlakuan. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan yaitu: MFT (Multistage Fitness Test) untuk mengetahui VO2Max, tes daya tahan dan kekuatan otot meliputi: (1). tes  sit up, pull up, (2). Grip strength tes, digunakan untuk mengukur otot-otot tangan, (3). back dynamometer,digunakan untuk mengukur kekuatan otot punggung, (4). Leg dynamometer, digunakan untuk mengukur kekuatan otot tungkai. Teknik analisisi data menggunakan Uji t. Analisis statistik dengan Uji t dilakukan untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat peningkatan yang segnifikan efektifitas latihan bodyweight training dengan menggunakan metode tabata untuk meningkatkan kebugaran jasmani mahasiswa baru angkatan Tahun 2016-2017 Pendidikan Kepelatihan Olahraga FKIP Universitas PGRI Adibuana Surabaya. Setelah dilakukan analisis data maka hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa Ho diterima, hal itu dikarena -6,99192 < 2,04523, maka Ho diterima.Kesimpulan yang didapat pada tabel di atas adalah t Stat adalah Fh (F hitung) yaitu -6,99192 dengan t Critical two-tail (t-tabel) yaitu 2,04523. Data di atas menunjukkan bahwa Ho diterima, artinya latihan bodyweight dengan metode Tabata efektif untuk meningkatkan kebugaran jasmani Mahasiswa PKO FKIP Universitas PGRI Adibuana Surabaya. Berdasasrkan hasil analisis data dan pembahasan maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa, latihan bodyweight dengan metode Tabata dapat meningkatkan kebugaran jasmani Mahasiswa PKO FKIP Universitas PGRI Adi Buana Surabaya.

<p>The article is aimed at investigating the correlation between extroversion personality and vocabulary mastery toward speaking skill of the fourth semester students of English Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University in the academic year of 2012/2013; both partially and simultaneously. The method of this study is correlational research. The population of the study is all of the fourth semester students while the sample is 30 students taken by simple random sampling technique. The technique used to analyze the data are simple, multiple correlation, and regression by using microsoft excel. The results of the study show that there is a positive correlation between extroversion personality and vocabulary mastery toward speaking skill both partially and simultaneously. The positive correlation indicates that extroversion personality and vocabulary mastery tend to go up or to go down together with speaking skill.</p>
