Fluoxetine (FLU), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is the first line in depression treatment and it is involved in oxidative stress (OE). Thus, this study aimed to analyze the OE parameters in patients diagnosed with depression and treated with FLU. Were evaluated 121 volunteers divided into two groups: 58 fluoxetine users (with major depression) and 63 non-fluoxetine users (control group, without major depression). The OE was evaluated by determining the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant power (FRAP) and activity of antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). MDA, FRAP, GPx and SOD were dosed in plasma. The influence of age, smoking, alcoholism, comorbidities, use of another drugs and antioxidants in the OE were evaluated. The results were compared between the groups. In relation to the fluoxetine daily dose, MDA presented higher levels in patients using 20 mg daily FLU when compared to the control group, as well as the activity of the GPx enzyme and the FRAP levels. In this way, the use of fluoxetine may interfere with the OE parameters, causing an increase in OE levels.

Objective. In menopause, reduction of estrogen hormone affects oxidative stress process in serum. Oxidative stress in saliva plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of oral diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the total antioxidant capacity and lipid peroxidation in the serum and saliva of premenopausal and postmenopausal women. Methods. In this case control study, 50 postmenopausal women (case group) and 48 premenopausal women (control group) were selected. The unstimulated whole saliva and serum of the postmenopausal and premenopausal women were collected. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the saliva and serum was measured by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Also, malondialdehyde (MDA) was measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) method for serum and saliva. Then, the obtained data were analyzed by SPSS 17, whereby Mann–Whitney test and Spearman’s correlation test were used. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. The postmenopausal group had significantly lower mean serum TAC and higher mean serum MDA than the control group ( P < 0 < 001 and P < 0.01 , respectively). The mean salivary TAC and MDA, however, did not differ significantly between the case and control group ( P = 0.64 and P = 0.08 , respectively). Conclusion. In postmenopausal women, with elevation of serum MDA and reduction of serum TAC, the extent of serum oxidative stress grows, but MDA and TAC levels of saliva do not change.

Introduction and Aim: Multiple Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological condition  might emerge as a result ofcomplex combination of genetic risk factors with environmental triggers, including oxidative stress. in this study we aimed to evaluate the effects of oral Crocin on oxidative stress in patients with MS.  Materials and Methods: Adjunct to standard treatment, the Crocin group (20 patients) received 30-mg/day (15 mg twice daily) dose of Crocin and placebo group (20 patients) received for 4 weeks. Saliva and urine samples were collected to determine the levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase activity (CAT), total thiol groups (TTG), lipid peroxidation (LPO), were measured at baseline and the end of the study.   Results: At baseline, there were no significant differences of LPO, TAC, CAT, and TTG of urine between the control and case groups. However, a significant difference was found after 4 weeks of Crocin-therapy in TTG,TAC and LPO (p<0.05) except in CAT activity (P>0.05). We found no deffrence in urinary TTG level and CAT activity in control group at the end of intervention (P>0.05), while TAC and LPO level were significantly different at the end of the study as compared with the beginning (P<0.05). Althugh, we found no significant difference in saliva LPO, TTG and TAC levels and the activity of CAT in case and control groups at first (p>0.05), Crocin administration have resulted in a significant increase in saliva TTG and TAC levels as well as CAT activity and markedly decrease in LPO level (p<0.05). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, Crocin can significantly reduce the several oxidative stress factors in MS patients and may contributes to attenuates the oxidative damages.

Objective: Carbon monoxide poisoning (COP) is one of the important causes of morbidity and mortality in toxicological cases. In this study, we aimed to find out more about the pathophysiology of COP by investigating the effects of COP on oxidative stress parameters such as total oxidant status (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS). Methods: Eighty-eight patients admitted to the emergency department of our hospital with acute COP and 35 healthy adults as control group were included in this study. Blood samples were collected from all COP patients at the time of initial emergency department evaluation to determine the oxidative stress parameters. Then, serum levels of total antioxidant status and total oxidant status levels were measured. Results: A total of 88 patients poisoned by carbon monoxide (CO; mean age 37.1 ± 18.2 years; 54’% women) were enrolled. TOS and carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels in COP patients were increased when compared to control group (p = 0.001). TOS, oxidative stress index (OSI) and COHb levels in COP patients were significantly lower after the treatment. (respectively, p = 0.016; p = 0.023; p = 0.001). On the other hand, no statistical differences were observed in TAS levels of study and control group as well as there were no changes with treatment. Conclusion: Measurements of TOS, TAS and OSI levels may be useful markers to find out the pathophsiology of COP.

Numerous studies suggested that oxidative stress (OS) played a central role in the onset and development of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PO); however, conflicting results were obtained as to the association of OS-related biomarkers and PO. This meta-analysis aimed to identify the association between these markers and PO, and explore factors that may explain the inconsistencies in these results. A systematic literature search was conducted in relevant database. Search terms and selection criteria were priorly determined to identify and include all studies that detected markers of OS in PO patients. We pooled data with a random effects meta-analysis with standardized mean differences and 95% confidence interval. Total 17 studies including 12 OS markers were adopted. The results showed that superoxide dismutase (SOD) in erythrocytes, catalase (CAT), total antioxidant status (TAS), hydroperoxides (HY), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), malondialdehyde (MDA), and vitamin B12 (VB12) in plasma/serum were not statistically different between the PO and control group, whereas significantly increased level of homocysteine (Hcy) and nitric oxide (NO), along with decreased SOD, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), folate, and total antioxidant power (TAP) in plasma/serum were obtained in the PO group. In summary, OS might serve as potential biomarkers in the etiopathophysiology and clinical course of PO.

This study was aimed to investigate the presence of uterine infection and the relationship between the severity of uterine infection and some oxidative stress parameters in cows in early postpartum period. Sixty six cows that were in the period between the 30th and 32rd days of postpartum were included in the study. Endometrial inflammation was scored according to the condition of the uterus at rectal and ultrasonographic examinations and the character and amount of uterine discharge from endometritis I through III, the latest being the most severe. Endometrial samples were taken from the clinically healthy animals by cytobrush method, and then stained with Giemsa for presence of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN). Cows with a PMN percentage less than 18% were considered to be healthy (control, n=20). All cows were sampled for blood. Nitric oxide (NO) levels in Group I (Endometritis I; n=20), Group II (Endometritis II; n=16), Group III (Endometritis III; n=10) and the control group were determined to be 23.0±0.63 nmol/mL, 32.23±0.97 nmol/mL, 36.56±0.48 nmol/mL, and 11.10±0.29 nmol/mL, respectively. The differences among the groups were found to be statistically significant. Malondialdehyde (MDA) level was highest in Group III (6.38±0.13 μmol/L), and its level significantly decreased with the reduced severity of endometritis. The comparison of the groups for total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant capacity (TOC) demonstrated that endometritis caused a decrease in TAC levels (P<0.05), but did not affect TOC levels. Endometritis increased serum NO and MDA levels, and decreased TAC levels, but had no effect on TOC levels. In conclusion, NO and MDA, as well as TAC can be used as a biochemical marker for estimation of the severity of endometritis in cows.

Introduction: Anesthesia induced during a surgical intervention, the duration of the surgical intervention, and the surgical intervention itself tend to affect immune functions, resulting in the formation of free radicals in the metabolism. Free radicals can cause postoperative disorders by targeting biomolecules in the cell, such as lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and DNA. In the present study, we used remifentanil or esmolol to induce a controlled hypotension in patients who were undergoing septorhinoplasty under general anesthesia, and we planned to compare the effect of these agents on hemodynamics and oxidative stress relative to the control group. Methodology: A total of 75 patients aged between 18 and 65 y, ASA I-II, planned to undergo elective septorhinoplasty, were included in this study. Patients were randomly divided into the following three groups: Group R (remifentanil group, n = 25); Group E (esmolol group, n = 25); and Group C (control, n = 25). Anesthesia was induced with 2 mg/kg propofol 2 mg/kg, fentanyl 1 µg/kg, and rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg. Immediately after induction, Group R was started loading dose of remifentanil 1 µg/kg/min, followed by infusion at 0.25–0.50 µg/kg/min. In Group E, a loading dose of esmolol 500 µg/kg was given for 1 min, then infusion was continued @ 150–300 µg/kg. A targeted mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 55–65 mmHg was aimed. In Group C, remifentanil was infused at 0.1–0.2 µg/kg/min until a MAP of 70–100 mmHg was reached. During operation; systolic (SAP), diastolic (DAP) and mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2), EtCO2 (end tidal CO2) were recorded before induction, after induction, after intubation, at 5-min intervals during the first 30 min, and then at 10-min intervals during the intervention. The amounts of remifentanil and esmolol consumed by the patients during the operation were calculated and recorded. Blood samples that were taken twice, preoperatively and postoperatively, for malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total oxidant level (TOL), total antioxidant level (TAL), and oxidative stress index (OSI). Results: MAP showed a greater decrease starting from the 25th min and 40th min after intubation in remifentanil group and esmolol group respectively, compared to the control group. In the remifentanil and control groups, there was a statistically significant decrease in the postoperative OSI levels compared to the preoperative levels. One the other hand, in the esmolol group, there was no statistically significant difference between the preoperative and postoperative median OSI levels. There was a significant increase in the postoperative TAL of the remifentanil group compared to the preoperative level. Abstract Blast lung injury (BLI) is the major cause of death in explosion-derived shock waves; however, the mechanisms of BLI are not well understood. To identify the time-dependent manner of BLI, a model of lung injury of rats induced by shock waves was established by a fuel air explosive. The model was evaluated by hematoxylin and eosin staining and pathological score. The inflammation and oxidative stress of lung injury were also investigated. The pathological scores of rats’ lung injury at 2 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days post-blast were 9.75±2.96, 13.00±1.85, 8.50±1.51, and 4.00±1.41, respectively, which were significantly increased compared with those in the control group (1.13±0.64; P&lt;0.05). The respiratory frequency and pause were increased significantly, while minute expiratory volume, inspiratory time, and inspiratory peak flow rate were decreased in a time-dependent manner at 2 and 24 h post-blast compared with those in the control group. In addition, the expressions of inflammatory factors such as interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, FosB, and NF-κB were increased significantly at 2 h and peaked at 24 h, which gradually decreased after 3 days and returned to normal in 2 weeks. The levels of total antioxidant capacity, total superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase were significantly decreased 24 h after the shock wave blast. Conversely, the malondialdehyde level reached the peak at 24 h. These results indicated that inflammatory and oxidative stress induced by shock waves changed significantly in a time-dependent manner, which may be the important factors and novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of BLI.

This study aimed to investigate the role of oxidative stress parameters (ROMs, OXY, SHp), the Oxidative Stress index (OSi), and High Mobility Group Box-1 protein (HMGB-1) in canine leishmaniosis (CanL). For this study, thirty dogs, naturally infected with Leishmania spp. (Leishmania Group, LEISH) and ten healthy adult dogs (control group, CTR) were included. The diagnosis of CanL was performed by a cytological examination of lymph nodes, real time polymerase chain reaction on biological tissues (lymph nodes and whole blood), and an immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) for the detection of anti-Leishmania antibodies associated with clinical signs such as dermatitis, lymphadenopathy, onychogryphosis, weight loss, cachexia, lameness, conjunctivitis, epistaxis, and hepatosplenomegaly. The HMGB-1 and oxidative stress parameters of the LEISH Group were compared with the values recorded in the CTR group (Mann Whitney Test, p < 0.05). Spearman rank correlation was applied to evaluate the correlation between the HMGB-1, oxidative stress biomarkers, hematological and biochemical parameters in the LEISH Group. Results showed statistically significant higher values of SHp in the LEISH Group. Specific correlation between the ROMs and the number of red blood cells, and between HGMB-1 and SHp were recorded. These preliminary data may suggest the potential role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of CanL. Further studies are undoubtedly required to evaluate the direct correlation between inflammation parameters with the different stages of CanL. Similarly, further research should investigate the role of ROMs in the onset of anemia.

To investigate the effect of B-ultrasound-guided nerve block on analgesia and sedation in patients with acute cholecystitis undergoing puncture and drainage. Methods 96 patients with acute cholecystitis who underwent puncture and drainage from May 2018 to November 2020 were randomly divided into control group and observation group by random number table method, with 48 cases in each group. The patients in the control group were anesthetized by local infiltration. The patients in the observation group were anesthetized by B-ultrasound-guided nerve block. Heart rate, blood pressure, analgesia score, sedation score, and oxidative stress level were compared between the two groups. Results At the time of puncture (T2), heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) in the two groups were significantly lower than those before operation (T1) (P<0.05); at the end of operation (T3), HR and MAP in the control group were significantly higher than those at T1 (P<0.05); at T2, HR and MAP in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05); at T3, HR and MAP in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). AtT2 and T3, Ramsay sedation score in both groups was significantly lower than that at T1 (P<0.05), while Ramsay score in the observation group was significantly higher than that in control group (P<0.05); atT2 and T3, visual analog scale (VAS) pain score in both groups was significantly higher than that at T1 (P<0.05), while VAS score in the observation group was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). After operation, the levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in the two groups were significantly higher than those before operation (P<0.05), and the levels of serum total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) were significantly lower than those before operation (P<0.05); after operation, the levels of serum SOD and T-AOC in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05), and the levels of MDA in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P>0.05). Conclusion B-ultrasound-guided nerve block anesthesia can maintain the stable hemodynamic index of patients with acute cholecystitis undergoing puncture and drainage therapy, improve the analgesic and sedative effect and reduce the oxidative stress response of the body.

Objective The present study aimed to assess the global oxidant and antioxidant status in infants born to preeclamptic mothers and their correlation with cardiac functions. Study Design We compared 40 infants born to preeclamptic mothers with 40 premature infants born to normotensive mothers. We assessed the relationship between echocardiographic measurements and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidant status (TOS) values. Results In the study group, TAC, TOS, and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were significantly higher in the cord blood (p = 0.03, 0.04, and 0.039, respectively) than in the control group. We did not observe any correlation between echocardiographic measurements and TAC, TOS, and OSI levels in infants born to preeclamptic mothers. Conclusion Compared with the control group, despite higher TAC levels in infants born to preeclamptic mothers, concurrent elevated OSI levels reveal that the oxidant–antioxidant balance is disturbed in favor of oxidants. Furthermore, the findings of this study suggest that echocardiographic parameters are unaffected by the oxidant status.
