The article deals with the problem of using the principles of the historiographical approach in the study of the reasons and factors for the tourist image building of the country in the historical and chronological aspect. The authors consider the importance of studying the historical process of creating negative or neutral images of Russia among European residents, based on the historiographical analysis of the sources of the 13th-19th centuries, which in the current context directly influences the demand and interest in tours to the country. The article offers and discusses in detail the mechanisms of tourist image building of the country in its two aspects – subjective and objective. It is noted that any person's image of a particular country without having visited it directly can be considered subjective, and be potentially attractive, neutral, or repellent. The negative image of Russia in the public perception of European residents over a long historical period is now expressed in its negative tourist image and fears of a possible tourist trip to the country. The article describes the technology of applying the historiographical analysis in the practice of training and retraining of industry professionals who are trained in technologies for designing tourist images of the country's regions. The article presents methods and forms of working with historical sources to identify ideas about the hospitality traditions and tourist images of Russia, described in the works of foreign travelers of the 13th-19th centuries. Descriptions of the peoples of Russia, their life and customs contained in these works, built the image perception of the country in the minds of European residents, in some cases with extrapolation effect to the modern era. The article states the empirical effectiveness of using historiographical analysis technologies to assess the causes and consequences of building a negative or neutral tourist image of Russia among foreign tourists, conditioned by the trends of its descriptions in historical sources. The conclusion is made that it is necessary to develop marketing strategies to overcome negative images and perceptions of Russia among potential consumers of its tour programs.

Immigration has become one of the most important topics in the political debate and the public media for the last decade. This study analyzes the patterns of words that the press uses to describe immigration and immigrants. We will focus on conceptual metaphors and their linguistic manifestations in the British, American and Croatian mainstream newspapers. This study attempts to gain an understanding of the strategic use of conceptual metaphors to construct and shape the context of the immigration discourse. The cognitive theory is outlined (see Lakoff & Johnson 1980, Kövecses 2002, Goatly 2007, Barcelona 2000, Croft et al. 2004) and applied to the immigration discourse as found in the public media (see Wodak 2015, van Dijk 2000, Cunningham-Parmeter 2012, Musolff 2015, Drulak 2006, etc.). The results of the analysis of a representative data of immigration metaphors show that a small set of 'conceptual frames' underlies the perception of immigrants. Several competing metaphors have been identified: immigrant=alien, migration=water, flood, immigration=movement/journey, etc. These metaphors are constantly repeated in different discourses that revolve around the concept of immigration. This study empirically attempts to identify how the media formulates its views about the migrants. In exploring the phenomenon of immigration we have used an interdisciplinary approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research methods, including socio-political and linguistic perspectives. The outcome of this research may provide the relevant source for future research to measure media’s role in shaping and defining public opinion about immigration issues.

Previous research has shown that British public perception of veterans can be negative and erroneous. Surveys, for example, indicate that veterans are characterized as skilled and valorous individuals but also as suffering from ill-health, unemployment, and homelessness. To investigate how these beliefs may form, the present study examines the public dimension of knowledge by analyzing depictions of veterans in the media. A total of 335 newspaper articles that represent British veterans were downloaded from Google News and UKPressonline. After the articles were classified with a content analysis, chi-square tests were conducted to understand how the representation of veteransmay be related to the political affiliations of news agencies and by newspaper format. The results suggest that British veterans are predominantly represented in both heroic and victimizing contexts. While political affiliation did not affect the representation of veterans significantly, newspaper format did, with broadsheet (quality) newspapers emphasizing victimized contexts and local and international newspapers focusing on heroic contexts, with tabloids occupying a middle ground. In conclusion, broadsheet newspapers may express sociocultural scrutiny toward the ways in which veterans are treated, while local and international newspapers may focus on stereotypical representations of heroic British military actions that veterans may symbolize. Implications and conclusions are discussed.
