Teacher-student politeness has been well-explored over the years, but mostly in direct or face-to-face communication. This study aims to fill the gap of politeness between students and educators in online learning, specifically in the sessions of one of the staple and most used educational platforms during the Covid-19 pandemic, namely Google Classroom. This study applies qualitative research method by describing the phenomenon of the language. This study observed the interaction of 36 English Literature Department students during their Google Classroom sessions from April to July 2021. The researchers analysed the students’ interaction with their lecturer according to Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory.  Five politeness strategies were identified, namely the positive politeness strategies (i.e., greeting, gratitude and address term), negative politeness (i.e., apology) and vernacular language. The gratitude and address term expression conveyed by “Thank you, Mam” is dominantly used by students to minimize threat when giving comments for every instruction created by lecturer. Results of this study showed that the students use politeness strategies to ensure the effectiveness of online learning, yet they also limit their text-based interaction with the short expressions of politeness such as “Hi, mam” or “Yes, mam”. This finding contributes to shedding light on the aspect of politeness in online interaction in Google Classroom and directs future studies to explore politeness in other contexts.

Abstract The goal of the present study is to investigate the sociolinguistic aspects in relation to the existence of the evil eye as a belief system in Kuwaiti society. Specifically, we examine the verbal and nonverbal manifestations of the evil eye, even at a distance, when its effect is believed to permeate into online interaction on social media. To achieve this goal, we used a combined research method that consists of an online questionnaire that reached an extensive group of 518 participants and a face-to-face interview with a group from our sample in order to elicit both quantitative and qualitative data. The results demonstrate that believing in the evil eye and its harmful effects is prevalent among all groups of people in the Kuwaiti society, regardless of sociolinguistic factors, which affect the frequency and nature of posts. Our findings also indicate that the same verbal and nonverbal methods of protection from the evil eye used in the offline world are used online. Moreover, these preventative methods appear to be in support of similar ones mentioned in previous literature related to this area.

The Covid-19 outbreak provided surprises and also provided challenges for various educational institutions, including universities. The government has banned universities from conducting face-to-face lectures. The government has issued a policy for implementing temporary courses online (Ministry of Education and Culture Dikti Circular No.1 2020). All universities are required to be able to conduct online or online learning. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of online lectures during the Covid-19 Pandemic for UAD Wates. The sample in this study were students of UAD Wates class of 2017, 2018, and 2020. The respondents in this study were 15 respondents. The effectiveness of online lectures during the Covid-19 Pandemic for students at UAD Wates was quite effective in preventing the transmission of the Covid-19 virus. However, the results of the study also show that online lectures have not been running effectively, because there are still lecturers who do not conduct online lectures. The learning method used is still dominant with assigning assignments to students so that many students are overwhelmed in doing coursework.

This study aimed to determine the effect of learning media on student achievement in mathematics. The learning media used include learning using Zoom Meeting, Google Classroom, and face-to-face in class. The research method used was an experiment with a quantitative approach. The samples were 30 Year 9 students divided into three different treatments in learning: learning using Zoom Meeting, learning using Google Classroom, and face-to-face learning in class. The instrument used was a description of the essay questions used to measure student achievement. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's - HSD test. The results showed a significant or different effect between the use of learning media on student achievement (Fcount = 3.665 > Ftable = 3.35) of α= 5%. Furthermore, further tests were carried out using the Tukey's - HSD test to examine which learning media had a different effect. Further test results showed that learning using Google Classroom with face-to-face learning in the class had a different effect on students' mathematics learning achievement. Meanwhile, student achievement between Zoom Meeting and face-to-face learning and Zoom meeting and Google Classroom was not significantly different. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed all activities around the world including the world of education due to the widespread impact of the covid-19 learning process activities in schools have been temporarily suspended and diverted to online or online learning, however, many parents have pros and cons related to online learning. Sociology learning in the midst of Covid-19 has experienced changes where there should be direct social interaction in problem-solving (face-to-face) between teachers and students turning online due to social distancing restrictions where this learning is difficult to practice for students. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of online learning on sociology subjects at SMAN 4 Pandeglang. This research method uses qualitative methods, namely the form of interviews and observations. Based on the results of the interviews conducted, it can be seen that online learning still experiences problems such as some students do not have cellphones, unstable internet networks in remote areas, and learning media that are less supportive. In addition, students also sometimes struggle to do the assignments given by the teacher because the assignments given are too many, but students do not understand the learning material
