AbstractIntroductionIn Parkinson’s disease (PD), a resting tremor of the thumb may affect the flexor pollicis longus (FPL) and influence hand functions. We investigated the relationship between FPL tendon thickness and hand function in PD patients and compared these characteristics with those in healthy controls.MethodsThe hand grip and pinch strengths were measured. The participants completed the Duruöz hand index, the Sollerman’s hand function test, and the Nine Hole Peg Test. The thickness of the FPL tendon was measured using ultrasonographyResultsThe FPL tendon was thicker in PD patients but was not associated with tremor severity. In PD patients, despite functional performance of the hands are impaired and grip strength is decreased, pinch strengths are preserved. FPL thickness was not correlated with grip and pinch strengths.ConclusionThe thicker FPL tendon may be associated with greater pinch and grip strengths and manual dexterity in healthy individuals. The presence of tremor is associated with a thicker FPL tendon.

Supply chain integration has been considered to be a source of competitive advantage for firms as it improves relationships and the flow of information and resources both between internal functions in an organization and between supply chain partners. This study examines the relationship between internal integration and functional performance. It also examines the three key antecedents to internal integration: communication, leader support and conflict. A questionnaire survey is used to collect data from a sample of 152 production managers. The data are analyzed using regression. The results indicate that communication, conflict and leader support are antecedents of internal integration and also impact functional performance. Internal integration is also found to mediate the relationships between communication and leader support with functional performance, but not for the relationships between conflict and functional performance. This is also the contribution of the paper, which is the first to examine and suggest these mediating effects between communication, leader support, internal integration and functional performance.

Abstract Background Patients with Heart Failure (HF) show impaired functional capacities which have been related to their prognosis. Moreover, physical functional performance in functional tests has also been related to the prognosis in patients with HF. Thus, it would be useful to investigate how physical functional performance in functional tests could determine the prognosis in patients with HF, because HF is the leading cause of hospital admissions for people older than 65 years old. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to summarise and synthesise the evidence published about the relationship between physical functional performance and prognosis in patients with HF, as well as assess the risk of bias of included studies and the level of evidence per outcome. Methods Major electronic databases, such as PubMed, AMED, CINAHL, EMBASE, PEDro, Web of Science, were searched from inception to March 2020 for observational longitudinal cohort studies (prospective or retrospective) examining the relationship between physical functional performance and prognosis in patients with HF. Results 44 observational longitudinal cohort studies with a total of 22,598 patients with HF were included. 26 included studies reported a low risk of bias, and 17 included studies showed a moderate risk of bias. Patients with poor physical functional performance in the Six Minute Walking Test (6MWT), in the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and in the Gait Speed Test showed worse prognosis in terms of larger risk of hospitalisation or mortality than patients with good physical functional performance. However, there was a lack of homogeneity regarding which cut-off points should be used to stratify patients with poor physical functional performance from patients with good physical functional performance. Conclusion The review includes a large number of studies which show a strong relationship between physical functional performance and prognosis in patients with HF. Most of the included studies reported a low risk of bias, and GRADE criteria showed a low and a moderate level of evidence per outcome.

Context:Isokinetic strength and functional performance are used to assess recovery after rehabilitation. It is not known whether low-speed closed-linear-kinetic isokinetic muscle strength correlates with functional performance.Objective:To investigate the relationship between linear closed (CKC) and open (OKC) concentric isokinetic strength of the dominant lower-limb extensors and functional performance.Design:Correlational analysis.Setting:University laboratory.Participants:Thirty uninjured men and women (age = 20.9 ± 2.4 years).Main Outcome Measures:Peak CKC and OKC isokinetic strength and best score from a shuttle run for time, single-leg vertical jump, and single-leg hop for distance.Results:Neither lower-limb CKC nor OKC isokinetic strength measured at low speeds correlated highly with performance on the functional tasks of jumping, hopping, and speed/agility.Conclusions:Although the basis of both closed and open isokinetic strength must be appreciated, they should not be the only determinants of functional performance.

Abstract Background: Preliminary studies have reported differences in strength and functional performance between sexes for patients with anterior cruciate ligament injury or reconstruction. Similar sex differences may occur in chronic ankle instability (CAI) populations. Factors like hip abduction strength and functional performance may be contributors to sex differences in CAI populations, but their presence and magnitude is unclear. While decreased hip abductor strength, functional performance, and self-reported instability scores have all been shown in association with CAI, any sex difference in the relationship between these indicators is unclear. The study was to determine if sex differences are present in the relationship between these indicators in individuals with CAI.Methods:Thirty-two women and twenty-nine men with unilateral CAI took part. Hip abductor strength and functional performance were respectively assessed using a hand-held dynamometer and the figure-8-hop test. All 61 participants scored the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT) for self-reported ankle instability.Results: Normalized hip abductor strength and functional performance measures for females were lower than for males. The self-reported ankle instability CAIT score, where higher values represent less instability, was significantly and positively correlated with normalized hip abductor strength and functional performance on the affected side in females (all p < 0.01), but not in males (all p > 0.19).Conclusions: Sex differences were observed in the relationships of normalized hip abductor strength and functional performance to CAIT scores from the CAI, holding for females but not males, and suggesting that evaluation and rehabilitation strategies should be sex-specific.

This scoping review aims to identify the link between an individual’s hop performance and muscle strength of hip extensors, knee flexors and extensors, as well as ankle plantar flexors through isometric or isokinetic (eccentric-concentric) testing. The literature review ascertained articles from 2005-2015 through Medline (PubMed), SPORT Discus, CINAHL and Google scholar, which included the connection between a minimum of one leg’s distance performance through hop testing in comparison to muscle strength (isokinetically or isometrically). The articles were screened by the researcher through their title, abstract and assessment relevance by criteria of inclusion and exclusion. Apart from one investigation, the obtained studies utilised isokinetic measures or isometric peak force outcome for muscle strength of the lower extremities, together with a comparison of healthy individuals’ hop performance. Many researchers have documented the existing connection between lower extremity strength of a subject with the overall intended function of the test. However, the data findings that were used were rigorously limited purely to the knee muscles that were tested through the use of an isokinetic dynamometer. Research has proven to be vital to this field, as the strength of muscles is affected by the performance of a hop in a functional test, although a clear unequivocal understanding is not present from prior investigations relating the connection between muscle strength (isokinetically) in an individual’s legs and the performance of the hop test. Furthermore, the researcher is required to analyse particular results from training sessions in order to evaluate the improvement of a subject’s performance, which will develop the benefits of the study in question, and gain a clearer comprehension of how to prevent injury.

Abstract Background: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between quadriceps muscle thickness and functional performance on the 60s sit-to-stand test (60s-STS), the six-minute walk test (6MWT), and handgrip strength in non-dialytic stage 4 and 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that evaluated 40 CKD patients aged between 30-70 years. Participants were submitted to an assessment that included quadriceps muscle thickness evaluated by a portable ultrasound. Functional performance tests included the 60s-STS, distance walked in the 6MWT, and handgrip strength. Also, body composition evaluated using electrical bioimpedance analysis and physical activity level through the short version of International Physical Activity were measured. Multiple linear regression was used to investigate the relationship between the quadriceps thickness and functional performance. Results: Quadriceps muscle thickness was correlated to 60s-STS (R2 = 43.6%; 95% CI = 0.022 - 0.665; β = 0.34; p = 0.037). Also, a moderate correlation between this muscle thickness and appendicular skeletal muscle (ALM) was found in CKD patients (r = 0.603, p <0.001). No relationship was found between quadriceps muscle thickness with the 6MWT and handgrip strength. Conclusion: Quadriceps muscle thickness is associated to 60s-STS, thus our results demonstrate the repercussions of the disease on the musculoskeletal system.
