Introduction. A high-quality life of hearing-impaired seniors is impossible without comprehensive rehabilitation and services that meet their physical, mental, and social needs and are aimed at compensating for their disabilities. In the complex rehabilitation system for disabled people of various nosology and age, a significant role is assigned to socio-cultural rehabilitation. Materials and research methods. The research methodology is based on the theory of compensatory abilities of the human body. The empirical basis of the study relies on an analysis of activities carried out by the Buryat regional branch of the All-Russian Society of the Deaf and the generalization of the authors’ experience in working with the hearing-impaired. Research goals and objectives. The study aims to summarize the experience of using socio-cultural rehabilitation technologies for the elderly with hearing impairments. The objectives are to determine the potential of socio-cultural technologies used in working with hearing-impaired elderly people; identify the most effective socio-cultural technologies applicable in the rehabilitation of hearing-impaired senior citizens; analyze the experience of working with the selected social category within the framework of the project “Baikal Summer School “Silver Age” in 2017-2019. The object of the research is the process of socio-cultural rehabilitation of hearing-impaired elderly people. Research results. The findings indicate that the socio-cultural rehabilitation of the hearing-impaired older adults seldom goes beyond the activities of specialized institutions and the All-Russian Society of the Deaf. Cultural and leisure institutions are not always ready to accept the specific audience, as they do not have trained specialists and special equipment for working with the deaf and hard of hearing. Innovation in solving existing problems is the involvement of individuals with disabilities in inclusive projects. Proposition underlying the study is that the activities especially significant for older people with hearing impairment are those able to improve their emotional wellbeing, expand communication, and enable their self-realization. Discussion and conclusion. A three-year project for the elderly, the Baikal Summer School ”Silver Age”, has confirmed the hypothesis that the rehabilitation program designed with a focus on the problems and specific features of its participants is effective and helps increase the rehabilitation potential of the participants. Keywords: socio-cultural rehabilitation, hearing-impaired people, the elderly, people with disabilities.

Over the engineering history, environmental and social needs inspire the development and innovation of many wonderful applications. For example, when the industrial robots entered our industrial life, great advances especially in automotive industry where the industrial robots cover about 90 % of the car industry activities started to change our own life. As the number of elderly people is increasing rapidly all over the world, this requires us to focus on their needs as their children left them alone in our busy daily life. Mechatronics and robotics can offer many possibilities to help elderly people by providing smart solutions for their daily needs as well as entertaining them during their lonely long stay at their homes. Many companies are providing smart mobile robots in different platforms (wheeled or walking) to help the elderly people depend on themselves in receiving their food and medicine at prescheduled times. Other companies are interested in providing smart wheel chairs to help the elderly people navigate indoor and outdoor freely and conveniently without any external help. Meanwhile, some companies are providing entertainment robots in different shapes to talk, play and communicate with elderly people in a nice way. The objective of this paper is to explore the mechatronics and robotics capabilities to assist elderly people and to make their life easier, comfortable and self-governing without any external help. This paper will highlight also the effect of the environment and the social needs in inspiring new innovations. As an example, the innovations by Badi Az-Zaman Ismail Al-Jazari, a Muslim scientist, will be investigated. This paper is going to discuss also the idea and the motivation behind two of Al-Jazari’s robotic applications (Although the term robot was not coined at that time). These two devices are the washing hands and the peacock fountain. Although he used to apply mechanical structure and fluid for controlling the motion of the two devices, they were very beautiful and resemble some of the robotic applications nowadays.

The slowing down of general bodily functioning and the dulling of the sensory and motor processes that accompany aging, dictate the need for designing special equipment so that the elderly citizen can function effectively and independently as a member of society. Examples may be found in labeling, devices to help in opening jars and medicine bottles, counter-balanced doors, special “helps” for bathroom activities, and warning devices for the hearing impaired. This forum will serve to identify special product needs for the elderly consumer by bringing together members of the technical groups on consumer products, aging, and safety. Moreover, the methodologies used by these three groups will be discussed in light of the elderly consumer with special emphasis being directed towards the modifications and synthesis needed in these methodologies to obtain the required information.

Drawing on Simone de Beauvoir’s call for a change perspective on old age, as perceive, this article reviews the literature for factors and aspects that influence the quality of life of the elderly. Simone de Beauvoir saw old age as the individual’s unending struggle with the indifference that elderly people encounter, and with pain and illnesses. The improvement in the situation of the elderly cannot be accomplished by merely raising pensions and providing fair housing; rather it is necessary to have a more profound change – a change of life (de Beauvior, 1996). Hence, improving the quality life of elderly people necessitates a more holistic approach, that considers physical functioning, mental, social, environmental and cognitive condition in addition to traditional aspects involving health and economic aspects.

The article is devoted to the matter of the interconnection of social services and the image of their recipients. Among the latter, special attention is paid by scientists and practitioners to elderly people in an ageing population. The authors promote awareness of the importance of the social work principles with the elderly and its compliance with spectrum, level, and hierarchy of their social needs. The range of needs of the elderly people, which are met through social services, is constantly expanding; conditions and approaches to their typology and satisfaction are also changing. The authors offered to consider the image of the elderly people in a deeper sociological dimension: through the views of experts in social work about this group of social service recipients. During the expert survey, conducted by the authors among specialists of the territorial centres of social services for the city of Kharkiv and Kharkiv region inhabitants, it was revealed that the image of the elderly people is fixed through the emotional perception; the idea of what is missing for the elderly people (their needs that are not satisfied); associations that appear towards them as a problem group. Elderly people at the social work professionals’ emotional level (regardless of their gender, age, signs, educational potential, accommodation) bring out mostly positive emotions, setting them up to perform their professional duties. Differences in the views of experts on the needs of elderly people are due mainly to a spatial factor – a place of residence. It is shown that the views of social work specialists about the image of their clients are formed based on the acquired in the process of professional activity, specific sensory impressions about the elderly. The authors determined the requirements for the views of social work specialists about the elderly. The latter must correspond to the triad: to be creative, critical and productive. The creative imagination of social work specialists is in demand, which involves their independent creation of new images of the elderly people as recipients of social services depending on the specific time, life situation and personal strategies of social participation/social exclusion of the elderly.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure.
