54 smokers were treated under one of three conditions. The longer the subject had been smoking prior to treatment and higher daily smoking rates at the time of therapy were the best predictors of whether the subject was able to quit smoking. Subjects were treated with several self-control procedures over varying number of daily sessions. It was concluded that an immediate punishment technique was not effective and that 5, 7, or 9 days of therapy were not of sufficient duration for a high rate of success to be attained.

The subject of the Law of God was one of the most important subjects in the lower and secondary schools of the Russian Empire for two centuries. It was a subject which gave knowledge of God, a subject important not only in its educational, but also in its educational meaning, and under the influence of which several generations of the Orthodox population of Russia grew up. The study of this subject was obligatory for all children who received holy Baptism in the Orthodox Church. The Law of God was also taught at home, but the main place where a child could absorb religious knowledge was in school. The Law of God was taught mainly by priests, and their post was called a teacher of the law. The teacher of the law enjoyed all the rights of public service on an equal footing with other teachers. By the end of the 19th century, problems associated with the process of teaching the Law of God had appeared, the syllabus for the subject was out of date, there were repeated cases of negligence on the part of the teachers, and there were many cases of active protests against the teaching of God's Law by the students themselves. All the above-mentioned problems tried to be solved in the light of the church reforms of the beginning of the last century. This article is devoted to the question of teaching God's Law in the work of the Presidium of the Most High Council. The research examines the place of God's Law subject at the meetings of this body, the interest of the Presence members in it, the suggestions to improve the quality of teaching such an important subject and its preservation in the list of obligatory subjects in the educational institutions of the Russian Empire.

The article deals with the problem of professional training specialists in tourism. The relevance of the research is that recently the role of knowledge in the process of training future specialists in the sphere of tourism has changed. In the current socio-economic context, in order to fulfill the order of society for high-level future specialists in the sphere of tourism, graduates of higher educational institutions are forced to possess not only an extensive theoretical base in their specific specialty, but also certain meta-subject knowledge. However, mere knowledge ownership is no longer sufficient in the context of the development of the international labor market. The problem of the need for the formation and development of a new quality of education appears, the updated content of which will be based on key competencies. In this case, the key competence is defined as a mandatory competence, because it corresponds to the conditions of implementation, which are not limited, not too specific, but are universal within certain limits. In this regard, a survey of future tourism experts was conducted on the subject of their perception of the importance of forming competencies. The results of the survey are described in this article.

The members of the governing boards of schools, colleges which provide vocational education and training, and universities in the UK have traditionally been volunteers. In some contexts, however, for example, colleges in Northern Ireland, governors are now paid. Whether volunteer governors in other or all settings should be remunerated is the subject of debate. This article analyses the various aspects of that debate. It considers the nature of volunteering; the socio-political context of volunteering; and the growing momentum for the remuneration of governors of all UK educational institutions. The article also considers the arguments for and against governor remuneration, which include remuneration and: the way governors and the governing of educational institutions are valued; the visibility of governing; governor recruitment; the diversity of governing board membership; the quality of governing; the remuneration of other publicly funded agencies and organisations; the accountability governors experience in their role; the market for school governors; and whether a policy which implemented governor remuneration could be reversed. The article also considers aspects that would need to be resolved in practice: who would be paid and for what; the level of remuneration; the funding of governor remuneration; and the organisation of remuneration.
