The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of leadership styles on academic performance in Junior High Schools (JHS) in Mampong in the Mampong Municipal Assembly of Ashanti Region in Ghana. The design for the study was a mixed study using both the qualitative and quantitative analyzes. It was a correlation survey designed to establish the relationship between leadership styles and academic performance in schools in Mampong in the Mampong Municipal Assembly. Data collected on the leadership styles of the school leaders were the independent variables and the academic performance as dependent variables. The data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 22 and Epi-Info, a data capturing and analysis software. The study noted that unless the headmasters are well equipped with knowledge and skills in leadership they would not know if they have any influence on their schools and on academic work. The study also established that even though respondents agreed that a leadership style can affect academic performance, the headmasters do not gain the confidence of the stakeholders enough in order to build terms that can enhance quality of teaching and learning. Based on these establishments, it was recommended that teacher training institutions should incorporate in their curriculum, training in the art and science of leadership in order to groom leaders’ right from school. Again, it is recommended that compulsory continuous professional development in leadership should be institutionalized in Ghana Education Service (GES) for headmasters.

Academic performance among learners has been pulled into much consideration in the worldwide field in this manner, requiring the execution of the essential procedures to help improve and keep up performance in auxiliary schools. Strategic leadership practices are fundamental in schools due to the changing climate, unpredictable, dubious, and vague. It stays to be one of the significant impacts on the academic performance of understudies in auxiliary schools. The examination tries to discover the strategic leadership practices and academic performance in open auxiliary schools in Kericho County, Kenya. The essential objective of the study was; to inspect the impacts of strategic leadership styles, the stakeholder's involvement, resource allocation, and school laws and guidelines on academic performance in public secondary schools in the Kericho county. This investigation was founded on Path-goal theory, transformational leadership approach, and trait leadership theory. The investigation utilized a descriptive examination design because the design focuses on finding relationships between variables. A stratified random sampling method was utilized to choose the respondents from the sampling outline. The objective populace for the examination was 540 subjects. The sample size of the examination was 108, including 18 school heads, 36 departmental heads, and 54 class educators in optional schools in Kericho County. Information was gathered utilized an organized survey with both open and closed questionnaires. Information was dissected by use of both descriptive and inferential statistics with the guide of SPSS software. The outcomes were introduced in different configurations, including diagrams, pie graphs, and recurrence tables. Cronbach's alpha was used to estimate the degree of reliability of the exploration instruments. The ANOVA and T test were used in data analysis to generate quantitative reports through tabulations, percentages, frequencies and measures of central tendency. The study found out that there is a significant relationship between strategic leadership practices and academic performance. The study found out that the leadership style, stakeholder’s involvement, resource allocation, and school rules and regulations greatly influence academic performance in public secondary schools in Kericho County, Kenya. According to the study, the principal should use the most appropriate leadership styles that facilitate collective responsibility in order to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning; school management should develop capacity building programs to empower both the principal and teachers in their leadership skills and styles; and teachers should be involved. To guarantee that academic performance in the region is improved, the principal should work closely with school boards of management and the ministry of education. Besides, there is need for keen management of schools and continuous meetings between the principal, teachers, and the parents for planning and monitoring academic progress of the pupils. Lastly, the recruitment of principals and teachers should be taken as a serious practice by the teacher’s service Commission to ensure the deployment of the most qualified and experienced principals and teachers.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to explore the moderating effects of gender and income on the relationship between leadership style and quality of work life (QWL). This study provides meaningful implications for the hospitality industry in terms of gender and income between leadership and QWL. Design/methodology/approach Data are collected from five-star hotel employees (n = 443) in Turkey. The hypotheses are tested using hierarchical linear regression. The independent and dependent variables used to test the hypotheses involving the dependent variable of QWL are centered prior to the empirical analysis to avoid potential multicollinearity. Findings Transformational and transactional leadership styles were significant predictors of QWL, controlling for the demographic variables (i.e. age, employment statistics and education level), but gender and income were not significant antecedents of QWL. When it comes to the interaction effect of leadership styles and gender, gender showed a statistically significant moderating effect between transformational leadership and QWL, but not between transactional leadership and QWL. Income had a statistically significant moderating effect between both leadership styles and QWL. Practical implications The findings of the study potentially affect hotel management by identifying the moderating effect of gender and income of the employees and demonstrating how quality of life of the employees can be improved by leadership styles of managers. Originality/value Previous literature has addressed the issue of leadership and its outcomes. However, there has been limited research on examining the relationship among gender, income, leadership style and QWL in the case of hospitality management.

The paper seeks to investigate the level of productive knowledge of ESL learners, the writing quality and the relationship between the vocabulary knowledge and the writing quality. 150 final year students of English language in a university in Nigeria were randomly selected as respondents. The respondents were asked to write an essay of 300 words within one hour. The essays were typed into Vocab Profiler of Cobb (2002) and analyzed the Lexical Frequency Profile of the respondents. The essays were also assessed by independent examiners using a standard rubric. The findings reveal that the level of productive vocabulary knowledge of the respondents is limited. The writing quality of the majority of the respondent is fair and there is a significant correlation between vocabulary and the witting quality of the subjects. The researchers posit that productive vocabulary is the predictor of writing quality and recommend various techniques through which teaching and learning of vocabulary can be improved.

The research analyzes the relationship between factors of resilience and academic performance in disabled students studying at the Technical University of Manabí. It is a correlational descriptive study conducted with a population of 88 disabled students, of which two groups were selected, one with high academic performance and the other with low performance. A questionnaire was designed and applied to determine the level of quality of life and risk factors of adolescents. Resilience was measured with the SV-RES scale created for the Latin American population.

(1) Background: Academic engagement has been reported in the literature as an important factor in the academic achievement of university students. Other factors such as emotional intelligence (EI) and resilience have also been related to students’ performance and quality of life. The present study has two clearly delimited and interrelated objectives. First, to study the mediational role that engagement plays in the relationship between EI and resilience on quality of life. Secondly, and similarly, to study the mediational role of engagement in the relationship between EI and resilience, but in this case on academic achievement. (2) Methods: For this purpose, four scales frequently used in the literature to measure emotional intelligence, resilience, academic engagement and quality of life were administered to 427 students of the University of Jaén undertaking education degrees. In addition, students were asked to indicate their current average mark as a measure of academic performance. Two mediational models based on structural equations were proposed to analyse the relationships between the proposed variables. (3) Results: The results obtained showed that emotional intelligence and resilience directly predicted students’ life satisfaction, but this direct relationship did not result in academic performance. In addition, and assuming a finding not found so far, engagement was shown to exert an indirect mediational role for both life satisfaction and academic performance of students. (4) Conclusions: The findings of the study support the importance of engagement in the design and development of instructional processes, as well as in the implementation of any initiative.

The nexus between academic performance, nutrition and eating habit is globally recognized to the extent that it has inspired various strategies such as ‘school feeding programmes’ in many nations including Nigeria. This correlational study was aimed to evaluate the relationship between the eating habits of primary school pupils and their academic performance, using a survey design. Fifty pupils in two intact classes from two schools in rural areas, formed the sample. Data was collected using interviewer-questionnaire, coupled with naturalistic observation, for the eating habits and their results from the term’s examination done within the same periodin the schools. The data was analyzed using SPSS – 23 to determine the correlation coefficients. The results suggest that there is strong relationship between pupils’ eating habits, in terms of frequency of feeding, quality of feeding pattern, and quality of breakfast and their academic performance. In addition, the pupils perceived that eating light breakfast enhances their attention span to learn unlike, skipping of breakfast and eating heavy breakfast. The results of this study provide empirical evidence which can be used to encourage parents in rural areas to provide adequate nutrition for their wards/children to enhance their performance in school as recommended in this paper.

Affective commitment is a commitment that comes from within and it needs quite some time to develop. Organizations need to ensure that their employees have strong affective commitment. Transformational leadership style can help employees to feel valued and develop strong commitment. On the other hand the positive atmosphere inside the organization will also enrich the positive experience of employees which in the end will increase the affective commitment. This study analyses the effect of transformational leadership and job satisfaction on employee’s affective commitment. We study one of the state companies in Medan using 72 participants. The explanatory method and path analysis are used to explain relationships and influences between variables. The results of the study prove that transformational leadership style and job satisfaction simultaneous and partial have effects in improving the quality of employee affective commitment. Business organizations need to apply transformational leadership styles and develop human resources program that can enhance job satisfaction. By carefully focus on these two elements, the organization is expected to be able to increase employee affective commitment. Unsur kepemimpinan khususnya yang bersifat transformasional diyakini dapat membuat karyawan merasa dihargai dan pada akhirnya memiliki komitmen yang kuat. Di samping itu, suasana dalam organisasi yang menyenangkan akan memperkaya pengalaman positif karyawan yang juga berdampak pada peningkatan komitmen afektif. Penelitian ini menganalisis pengaruh kepemimpinan transformasional dan kepuasan kerja terhadap terbentuknya komitmen afektif karyawan di salah satu perusahaan negara di Medan. 72 Responden yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Metode eksplanatori dan analisis jalur digunakan untuk menjelaskan hubungan dan pengaruh antar variabel. Hasil penelitian membuktikan bahwa gaya kepemimpinan transformasional dan kepuasan kerja memiliki pengaruh simultan dan parsial terhadap peningkatan kualitas komitmen afektif karyawan. Organisasi bisnis perlu mengaplikasikan gaya kepemimpinan transformasional serta mengembangkan program sumberdaya manusia yang bisa meningkatkan kepuasan kerja karyawan. Purpose: Leadership is an interactive concept that influences our daily lives. A quality concept is an approach and philosophy that leaders use to incorporate the leadership process into the organization successfully. Both concepts have an incremental history, correlation, and discussion. However, the two concepts have not yet been theoretically and empirically integrated. This paper attempts to integrate and discuss leadership and quality to create a single quality leadership style based on the definition of quality gurus and the leadership styles which relate more towards the quality of leadership. Methodology: The study used a systematic literature review to review the past literature related to the field of leadership and quality management. This study provides the constructs from definitions proposed by experts in this field. Each leadership styles have many constructs that may or may not be related to quality. Results: The study proposed a conceptual framework which combined the definitions of quality gurus and the different leadership styles. The finding of this study has contributed to the expansion of theoretical knowledge in the field of quality leadership style. Implications: This paper indicated that the review of the literature regarding what quality gurus define as important relating to leadership. This paper provides the constructs from quality gurus definitions. Novelty: Each leadership styles have many constructs that may or may not be related to quality. Therefore, future studies need to consider what the constructs from those leadership styles are considered effective to quality.

PurposeThis paper aims to report the findings of a study examining the relationship between different leadership styles and engagement through the mediating role of proactive personality.Design/methodology/approachServant leadership, paradoxical leadership, authentic leadership, employee engagement and proactive personality were assessed in an empirical study based on a sample of 348 military personnel in Spain. The questionnaire data were analyzed through SEM using EQS and bootstrapping analysis using the PROCESS macro for SPSS.FindingsThe results reveal that servant leadership style in officers partially impacts their cadets' engagement through proactive personality but that authentic and paradoxical leadership styles do not mediate the relationship. The authors also verify a direct relationship between proactive personality and engagement.Practical implicationsThe study implications advance the literature on leadership in emphasizing new leadership styles to increase proactive personality and engagement in the military context. This study verifies the importance of military leaders fostering servant leadership as an antecedent of proactive personality. Finally, the authors show that servant leadership partially impacts engagement through proactive personality.Originality/valueThis study explores the relationship among servant, paradoxical and authentic leadership styles, proactive personality, and engagement – relationships that have not been explored theoretically and tested empirically in the military context.
