In-depth learning is a learning method, which can transfer knowledge and solve problems in various complex and real situations through learners' critical understanding and thinking towards learning content. Guided by the subject core competence, the integrated course of English reading and writing should combine autonomous and cooperative learning to promote the perceptual understanding, and then design multi angle writing training such as text structure imitation, plot rewriting and ending continuation, so as to promote the application and transfer of language knowledge to promote students' in-depth learning.

The High School English Curriculum Standard (2017 edition) states that it's crucial to cultivate core competences for students, which includes language ability, learning ability, cultural awareness and thinking quality. There is no doubt that critical thinking, as one of the key components of thinking quality, should be emphasized.  However, due to the influence of examination-oriented education and other factors, most teachers tend to pay too much attention to the cultivation of students' language knowledge and language skills, neglecting the cultivation of students' critical thinking ability. The traditional mode of interpretation of language knowledge still dominates in most English reading teaching, teaching design tends to be modeled and text processing is so superficial that students can not understand the discourse deeply. Students in the classroom did not experience a deep thinking level of ability training. Therefore, teachers should think carefully about how to cultivate students’ critical thinking in high school English reading class and adjust their teaching methods accordingly. This paper will take the teaching design of a reading lesson as an example to explore how to cultivate students' critical thinking in high school reading class.

The course of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is supposed to prepare students for the professional sector, yet the course at IAIN Palopo in Indonesi is designed in general English without any professional input or assessment of the learner's needs. This research is motivated by the Communication and Islamic Broadcasting program students’ complaints of unsatisfaction with the course since it does not meet their needs. This research aims to examine the English needs of students studying in the communication and Islamic broadcasting program. The researchers used a mixed-methods strategy that incorporates both quantitative and qualitative research. The participants in this study were 60 undergraduates and 30 graduate students. Data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews. The data was then analyzed using the comprehensive concept of need analysis proposed by Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998). The results revealed that the majority of students learn English to help them advance in their careers. Their top priority in ESP is to improve their speaking skills, followed by listening, reading, and writing. Due to the repetitive learning method, inappropriate textbook, and short duration, according to the interview results, the students were also unsatisfied with the present ESP course.

National Examination is one of the learning results assessment set by the Government, and is ruled at Minister of Education and Culture regulation Number 4 year 2018. The problem discussed in this study is the low percentage of students achieving Graduare Competence Standard/SKL 55 in the nationale examination tryout for mathematics. One of the alternatives to solve this problem is the Peer Tutoring learning method using Whatsapp Messenger application asisstance, in which the subject is grade 12 AP students of SMK Negeri 1 Tanjungpandan academic year of 2018/2019. The research method implemented is the classroom action research. The peer tutoring learning method using Whatsapp Messenger application asisstance was carried out both inside and outside the classroom by providing a smaller member whatsapp group and a  classroom whatsapp group. Each small group consists of 6 people in which there were 1-2 peer tutors. Based on the results of data analysis and discussion, there was an increase at the results of the tryout of mathematics national exam tryout for grade 12 AP students after peer tutoring learning method using whatsapp messenger application asisstance was applied, with the total increase up to 50%. This fact can be inferred from the difference of the test results percentage for the first tryout and the third tryout which is from 10% to 60%, while the average score is increased from 34.96 to 60.22 by 25.26 points.
